Choose the Patagonia Nano Puff if damp conditions are likely or you want a lower-profile layer that is easier to wear under a shell. Choose the Down Sweater if you want down insulation and greater warmth in dry conditions. Those are Patagonia’s qualitative recommendations, not independent test results or temperature ratings.

How the jackets differ

The main distinction is the insulation: the Nano Puff uses synthetic PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco, while the Down Sweater uses down. Patagonia’s comparison guide says down has the edge in absolute warmth, while synthetic insulation is the safer choice when an insulated jacket might get wet.

Nano Puff: synthetic insulation and a lower profile

The referenced men’s Nano Puff jacket uses 60-g PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco, which Patagonia describes as 100% postconsumer recycled polyester. Patagonia says the insulation stays warm when wet. Its product page lists a recycled polyester ripstop shell with a DWR finish made without intentionally added PFAS, plus an internal chest pocket that doubles as a stuffsack. The listed garment weight is 369 g (13 oz) for that specific men’s style; do not assume it applies to another size, a hooded version, or another market. Patagonia’s men’s Nano Puff product page

Down Sweater: down insulation and more warmth in dry conditions

The referenced men’s Down Sweater uses 800-fill-power Responsible Down Standard down and a NetPlus recycled nylon ripstop shell. Patagonia describes down as warmer than the Nano Puff in absolute terms, but says wet down loses its insulating structure. Patagonia’s men’s Down Sweater product page

Compare the practical trade-offs

Decision Nano Puff Down Sweater
Insulation 60-g PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco synthetic insulation on the referenced men’s jacket. 800-fill-power down on the referenced men’s jacket.
When dampness is possible Patagonia says synthetic insulation maintains warmth when wet; its DWR finish sheds light moisture. Patagonia says wet down loses its insulating structure; the DWR finish is described as handling light precipitation.
Relative warmth Less absolute warmth than the Down Sweater, according to Patagonia’s qualitative comparison. Patagonia gives it the edge in absolute warmth; no standardized head-to-head temperature rating is stated.
Layering Lower profile and easier to layer under a shell, according to Patagonia. Loftier profile by comparison.
Packability Stuffs into its internal chest pocket. Also stuffs into its chest pocket, according to Patagonia.
Shell and durability Recycled polyester ripstop; Patagonia calls it durable for outer-layer use. Recycled nylon ripstop; Patagonia describes both jackets as suitable for general wear and tear.
Published garment weight 369 g (13 oz) for the referenced men’s style only. Not stated on the cited product page.

The shell DWR finishes are intended for light moisture, not a guarantee of waterproofing. Patagonia presents both jackets as durable, versatile layers; that is manufacturer guidance, not the result of independent abrasion testing.

Choose based on your conditions and layering

Pick the Nano Puff for damp-risk or changeable weather

If drizzle, sweat, or shifting conditions make it plausible that your insulation will get damp, the Nano Puff is the safer choice of these two under Patagonia’s guidance. Its synthetic insulation is designed to retain warmth when wet, and its lower profile can make it easier to wear beneath a shell. The DWR finish may help with light moisture, but neither jacket should be treated as waterproof.

Pick the Down Sweater for greater warmth in dry conditions

If your priority is down insulation and more absolute warmth when conditions are dry, Patagonia gives the Down Sweater the advantage. The comparison does not establish a temperature range, so choose based on your layering system and expected conditions rather than treating “warmer” as a specific rating.

Do not decide on packability alone

Both jackets pack into a chest pocket, according to Patagonia. A quantified comparison of packed volume is not stated, so there is no supported basis here for declaring one smaller when packed.

What the comparison does—and does not—establish

Patagonia’s comparison guide, written by Mailee Hung and dated September 28, 2026, provides practical manufacturer guidance: synthetic is the safer choice if an insulated jacket might get wet, and down has the edge in absolute warmth. It does not provide a standardized test protocol, independent warmth rating, precise temperature threshold, or quantified comparison of packed volume. Product specifications can also vary by style, size, and market; check the listing for the exact version you plan to buy. Patagonia’s jacket comparison guide
