Paste As File is a Windows utility that turns clipboard contents into a file directly inside a folder. Copy text, an image, or other supported content, open the destination folder, right-click, and choose Paste As File. That is a different job from Windows Clipboard history: it creates a usable file rather than merely retaining items for later pasting.
The utility’s published feature set is broader than Microsoft’s documented clipboard-to-file actions, but its listed release, version 5.0.0.5, dates from September 13, 2018. Treat modern Windows compatibility and current availability as questions to verify before relying on it.
What Paste As File does
The vendor describes a simple folder-based workflow: copy content, open the target folder, right-click an empty area, and select Paste As File. The utility creates a new file in that folder from the clipboard data. See the product description at pasteasfile.org.
Supported clipboard output
The product site lists these output types:
- Plain text
- Rich Text Format (RTF)
- HTML
- Images: JPG, PCX, PNG, BMP, TGA, GIF, and TIF
When more than one representation is available on the clipboard, the utility’s file-type choices determine how that content is written. The site also describes options for copied files: placing them in a ZIP or 7z archive, creating a text inventory, or copying them into a subfolder.

Important RTF and compatibility notes
The vendor’s help document says RTF support is optional and disabled by default. It warns that enabling RTF may cause instability on some systems. The same document records a known issue with some clipboard-extending applications. These are vendor-documented qualifications, not independent compatibility test results. Paste As File versus ordinary Clipboard history
Clipboard history is for retaining and reusing recently copied items. Press Windows+V to open it, then paste a selected entry; you can also pin entries and, when configured, sync clipboard items across devices. Microsoft documents support for text, HTML, and bitmap formats, a 4 MB per-item limit, and a history of up to 25 entries. Older unpinned items are removed as new entries arrive. Paste As File instead targets the current folder and writes a persistent file. It is therefore useful when the next step is attaching, archiving, editing, or moving the content in File Explorer—not when you simply want to retrieve something you copied earlier.
How it compares with Microsoft PowerToys Advanced Paste
Microsoft’s current PowerToys Advanced Paste includes overlapping clipboard-to-file actions. Its documentation says you can save clipboard text as .txt, HTML clipboard data as .html, and clipboard images as .png. The comparison is about documented capability, not independent speed or reliability testing. PowerToys’ documented outputs do not establish parity with Paste As File’s PDF, RTF, broader image-format list, or ZIP/7z operations.
Which tool fits a particular task?
Choose Paste As File when
- You want a right-click action that writes clipboard content into the folder you are viewing.
- You need one of the formats listed by the vendor, such as PDF, RTF, or less-common image formats.
- You want the vendor-documented options for archiving copied files or producing a file inventory.
Choose PowerToys Advanced Paste when
- Your needs are limited to Microsoft’s documented
.txt,.html, or.pngfile actions. - You prefer a currently documented Microsoft utility with configurable shortcuts and local file-paste processing.
- You do not need the wider format and archive features described for Paste As File.
Use Clipboard history when
- You need to browse, pin, or reuse recent copies rather than create files.
- Your workflow benefits from Windows+V and optional cross-device synchronization.
- Your copied items fit within Microsoft’s documented 4 MB per-item and 25-entry history limits.
Version, requirements, and purchase information
Paste As File’s product site reports “Current Version: 5.0.0.5 (20180913)” and lists Windows XP or higher as the requirement. It also says Java is required for clipboard-image-to-PDF support. Those are the publisher’s listed requirements, not confirmation that the 2018 build installs or behaves correctly on current Windows releases.

The help PDF describes a 15-day trial followed by a £10 GBP registration fee. Because that information comes from a historical document, do not treat it as current pricing without checking the publisher directly.
Practical checks before depending on it
- Confirm that the download is still available from the publisher and that its terms and price are current.
- Test the exact Windows edition and update level used by your organization.
- Try plain text and a PNG first, then test any required RTF, PDF, archive, or uncommon image workflow.
- If you use a clipboard manager or extender, test it alongside Paste As File because the help document warns of conflicts with some such applications.
- Keep PowerToys Advanced Paste as a fallback if your required output is only TXT, HTML, or PNG.
The Bottom Line
Paste As File remains a distinctive idea: a folder context-menu command that turns clipboard data into files and can handle formats and archive operations beyond Microsoft’s documented Advanced Paste actions. Its published build is from 2018, however, so verify availability and compatibility before making it part of a modern Windows workflow. For straightforward TXT, HTML, or PNG output, PowerToys Advanced Paste is the more current documented alternative; for retrieving recent copies, use Clipboard history.
