The wounded captain opened the cockpit door, and reserve pilots aboard the aircraft took over and landed it safely at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Investigators had not established a motive in reporting published October 1.
What happened aboard flydubai flight FZ1073?
According to an AFP/Reuters report published October 1, 2026, the flight was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an incident took place in the cockpit on September 30. Israeli officials alleged that the co-pilot attacked the captain with a knife and tried to crash the aircraft. Those descriptions were allegations in initial reporting, not final investigative findings.
The report named the wounded captain as Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, and said he managed to unlock the cockpit door. Passengers then entered and subdued the alleged attacker. More than 170 people were reported aboard; the report also noted a separate count of 174 given by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, so the exact total was not consistent across accounts.
How did the aircraft land safely?
A second pair of flydubai pilots was aboard the aircraft. They took over after the incident and landed at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The main account describes the outcome but does not provide a recorder-based technical reconstruction of the flight, the aircraft systems affected, or the precise sequence of control inputs.

Passenger Yaniv Hayun told reporters after returning to Israel that he helped pull the assailant from the cockpit and said he pulled up the yoke and straightened the plane. That is Hayun’s account, as quoted by AFP/Reuters; it is not an official technical finding.
What is known about injuries and what happened next?
The captain was reported wounded. The available principal report does not establish further injury details. A secondary account said passengers and crew disembarked at Tabuk and that a replacement aircraft later took passengers to Israel. That onward-travel detail comes from secondary reporting, rather than the main AFP/Reuters account.

Have investigators determined a motive?
No. In the October 1 account, Israel’s envoy to the United Arab Emirates said it was too early to draw conclusions, and no motive had been determined. Israeli officials’ initial assessment was that the co-pilot acted alone, but the inquiry was ongoing.
The UAE said its investigation would establish the circumstances and motive, including whether the incident involved terrorist activity or purpose, prior planning, or direction. Israeli authorities were also investigating. The account said Saudi Arabia had not issued a statement on an investigation, and reported no official Israeli suggestion of Iranian involvement. Netanyahu said it was too early to say whether Iran was behind the incident; his remark is not evidence of foreign involvement.

- A precise passenger-and-crew total; accounts cited more than 170 and, separately, 174.
- A complete technical account of the flight’s movements and cockpit events. The report included a figure of nearly 14,000 feet lost in less than 30 seconds, but this was not presented as a final investigative finding.
