At the listed entry prices, Paramount+ Essential starts at $8.99 per month, compared with $10.99 per month for HBO Max Basic with Ads. The least expensive option is not automatically the better household value: compare the specific shows, events, and number of screens your family needs. Paramount+ Premium is listed at $13.99 monthly, while HBO Max’s Standard and Premium tiers cost more and add different features.

How many devices can stream at once?
Paramount+ advertises up to three simultaneous devices. HBO Max allows two simultaneous devices on Basic with Ads and Standard, and four on Premium; Premium sports streams are limited to two. If people in your home routinely watch different programs at the same time, these limits may matter more than the headline price.
Which service has the shows your family wants?
Paramount+ highlights programming from CBS, BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, and, on Premium, SHOWTIME. HBO Max says its plans have the same content across tiers. The plan pages do not establish a complete title-by-title catalog comparison, so check each service for the particular series and films your household wants before choosing.

Which one has the sports you watch?
Paramount+ advertises NFL on CBS, UFC, UEFA Champions League, and Zuffa Boxing; Premium adds live CBS access and additional sports. HBO Max includes select live sports on Standard and Premium and names MLB, NHL, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and premier cycling. Rights and schedules change, so verify that the specific event or competition you follow is available in your location and on the tier you intend to buy.
Do the plans include offline downloads and premium playback?
Paramount+ says Premium supports offline downloads and advertises 4K on select titles. HBO Max lists up to 30 downloads on Standard and up to 100 on Premium; Premium also lists 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos where available. Download rules, title availability, and device compatibility apply, and the plan pages do not establish that every title supports these features.

Paramount+ advertises separate profiles and kid-friendly profiles, but the page reviewed does not state a profile limit. Check the profile and parental-control options during signup and confirm they suit your household rather than assuming a particular number of profiles.
