No confirmed merger of the HBO Max and Paramount+ streaming services has been announced. David Ellison announced on October 2, 2026 that the combined Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery company is planned to operate under the Skydance name. Paramount’s SEC filing said it intends to change its legal name to Skydance Corporation, with the change expected to take effect on October 6. The corporate transaction itself was still awaiting closing conditions at the time of the announcement.

What was actually announced

The announcement concerns the identity and ownership of a combined entertainment company, not a new consumer streaming app. Paramount Skydance Corporation, Warner Bros. Discovery and merger subsidiary Prince Sub entered their merger agreement on February 27, 2026. At the effective time, Prince Sub is to merge into Warner Bros. Discovery, which would survive as a wholly owned subsidiary of Paramount Skydance.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s portfolio includes HBO Max, while Paramount’s includes Paramount+. Having both brands under common ownership would not by itself combine their applications, subscriptions, libraries or pricing.

Axios reported that Ellison described the new identity as giving “the combined company an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight.” He also said, “These brands are more than a destination. They are the launch pad.” Those remarks describe the corporate branding strategy, not a streaming-service launch plan.

When is the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery deal expected to close?

Company materials issued September 30, 2026 set October 6, 2026 as the anticipated closing date, subject to customary closing conditions. Therefore, the deal was expected but not completed as of October 2. Paramount’s October 2 Form 8-K also said the company expected its Class B ticker to change from PSKY to SKYD when its listing moves from Nasdaq to the New York Stock Exchange on or about October 6. Those are stated intentions and expected dates, not confirmation that either change has already taken effect.

What the name change means

If the planned corporate action takes effect, Skydance Corporation will be the legal name of the parent company. Paramount, Warner Bros., HBO Max and Paramount+ can still remain consumer-facing brands. A parent-company rename does not require every product brand to be renamed.

Are HBO Max and Paramount+ merging into one service?

The announcements reviewed do not say that HBO Max and Paramount+ will become one service, share an app, launch a bundle, change names or migrate subscribers. They also do not establish new prices, a catalog exchange, a shutdown date for either app or a timetable for any product integration.

That leaves several possible outcomes open: the services could remain separate, be bundled, be integrated technically or change in other ways. None of those outcomes should be presented as confirmed until the companies publish specific consumer-service plans.

What regulators and the court decided

On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said its investigation was complete and that, based on the evidence it received, the transaction was not likely to harm competition or American consumers in streaming video on demand, linear television, or theatrical-film development, production and distribution. That is the DOJ’s enforcement conclusion; it is not a promise about future prices, programming or app features.

On September 30, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California entered a consent decree agreed with 12 plaintiff states and modified the no-close order so the transaction could proceed if the remaining closing conditions were satisfied. Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín described the decree, as reported by the Associated Press, as a “fair, reasonable, and good faith approach to address the competitive harms” alleged by the states.

What the consent decree requires after closing

The decree imposes five years of commitments on the combined company. These are enforceable legal obligations, separate from management’s broader statements about strategy.

Requirement Commitment
U.S. theatrical films At least 30 films in each of the first two commitment years, then at least 32 in each of the following three years.
Wide theatrical releases At least 20 in each of the first two commitment years, then at least 21 in each of the following three years.
Independent films At least four independent films released in the U.S. each commitment year.
Theatrical windows Rules governing theatrical-release windows, with penalties for shortfalls.
U.S. production spending At least $300 million more annually, or $1.5 billion more over five years, than the combined 2025 level.
Basic-cable affiliation Separate negotiations for the parties’ basic-cable affiliation agreements.

The February merger announcement also said the companies intended to expand their direct-to-consumer business and were committed to at least 30 theatrical films annually. The decree’s year-by-year figures are the binding commitments.

What subscribers should do now

  • Continue using HBO Max and Paramount+ under their existing terms unless your provider announces a change.
  • Do not cancel or switch plans based solely on the Skydance corporate announcement.
  • Look for a formal notice before assuming a price change, bundle, app migration or catalog move.
  • After October 6, verify the closing status and any effective corporate-name or ticker change, because the announced date was conditional.

What remains unknown

No public timetable in the cited announcements answers whether either service will be renamed, merged, bundled, repriced, placed in a shared app or given a different catalog. Those are unresolved product decisions rather than consequences established by the planned Skydance corporate name.

The Bottom Line

Skydance is the planned name of the combined Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery company, with closing expected October 6, 2026 subject to customary conditions. The announcement does not confirm that HBO Max and Paramount+ will merge, change price, share an app or alter their libraries.
