Carolina will try to slow Detroit’s high-producing offense in its 2026 Week 4 home game without starting outside cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson. Both were placed on injured reserve before game day and were expected to miss about eight weeks, according to the Associated Press preview. Akayleb Evans and rookie Will Lee III are expected to step in, with Lee making his first start.
The challenge is not simply whether the replacements can cover Detroit’s receivers. If Carolina gives them extra help, it may leave openings elsewhere for quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and tight end Sam LaPorta. The matchup turns on how Carolina balances that help with the need to defend the rest of Detroit’s offense.
What Carolina loses with Horn and Jackson out
Horn and Jackson were both placed on injured reserve Wednesday before the game. The AP preview said each was expected to miss about eight weeks. Their absences leave Carolina with a substantially changed outside-cornerback group for this matchup.
Akayleb Evans and Will Lee III are the expected replacements
Evans brings starting experience: he has started 15 career games, but only two since 2024, according to the AP. Lee, a rookie, is set to make his first start. The difference matters because Carolina will be relying on one player with limited recent starting work and another who has not yet started an NFL game.

Head coach Dave Canales framed the opportunity positively: “People say next man up, and that’s really what it is. I go to the excitement for the opportunity for the guys that are going to play. These opportunities are few and far between, and so … when guys have a chance to come in and contribute to the team, it changes them. It energizes them.” That is an encouragement to the replacements, not evidence that the transition will be seamless.
Why Detroit can test more than the replacement corners
Through three games in the 2026 season, AP reported that Goff had completed 70.6% of his passes for 802 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Those are season-to-date figures, not full-season totals. They show why Carolina cannot focus only on containing one receiver or simply assume Detroit will avoid testing the new cornerback pairing.

Gibbs gives Detroit another route to exploit defensive choices. Through those same first three games, he averaged more than 100 rushing yards per game and scored four rushing touchdowns; as a receiver, he had 18 catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns, according to AP. If Carolina shifts coverage help toward the outside, Gibbs’ work as both a runner and receiver can make the resulting space relevant.
LaPorta is part of the coverage trade-off
Sam LaPorta had 14 catches for 144 yards and one touchdown through three games, per AP. The preview highlighted his matchup with linebacker Devin Lloyd, who was expected to return from a calf issue after missing the Browns game. If Carolina devotes more resources to supporting Evans and Lee, it may alter the coverage available against LaPorta and other targets. The precise defensive response is not established.

Carolina’s central decision: help the corners or preserve coverage elsewhere?
Carolina can respond to inexperienced outside corners with additional coverage help or different personnel and coverage structures. But those choices have costs: more help outside can reduce the defenders available to account for the middle of the field, the run, or receiving threats such as Gibbs and LaPorta. Conversely, leaving the replacement corners isolated could invite Detroit to test them directly.
Detroit offensive coordinator Drew Petzing said the injuries make Carolina’s plan harder to anticipate: “It adds to the unknown. There’s an element of, ‘Do they change? Do they not? Who’s going to be in the game? How are they going to organize it? What personnel packages do they want to play with?’” That uncertainty applies to Detroit as well as Carolina; the available reporting does not establish the exact coverage plan Carolina will use.

There is no verified pressure-rate or coverage-performance comparison in the cited matchup reporting that would justify a numerical prediction about Carolina’s best answer. The more defensible way to frame the test is as coordination: Carolina must decide how to protect its new outside pairing without making Detroit’s other options easier to use.
