If a PagePeeker screenshot request seems to time out, first separate your client’s HTTP deadline from PagePeeker’s optional wait parameter. For premium accounts, wait sets how long PagePeeker will wait before returning an image or placeholder; it is not a guarantee that every target site will finish rendering within that time. Check the V2 endpoint, response headers, and thumbnail readiness before changing timeouts.
Confirm that the request uses PagePeeker V2
PagePeeker labels V2 as current and recommended. V1 is discontinued and redirects to V2, so use the V2 endpoint directly when troubleshooting. Its documented pattern is:
http://{entrypoint}.pagepeeker.com/v2/thumbs.php?size={size}&code={code}&refresh={refresh}&wait={wait}&url={url}
The documentation lists free.pagepeeker.com for the free service and api.pagepeeker.com for unbranded and paid accounts. URL-encode the target in the url parameter. Keep the API code server-side; PagePeeker warns that exposing it in client-side code can let others use your account quota. See the PagePeeker V2 API documentation.

Understand the two different time limits
Your HTTP client deadline
Your application or HTTP library may stop waiting for a response after its own configured deadline. If that deadline expires first, the caller can report a timeout even if PagePeeker is still processing the capture.
PagePeeker’s optional wait
The API documentation says wait is an optional, premium-only parameter. When a thumbnail is not already generated, it sets the maximum number of seconds PagePeeker waits before returning either the image or a placeholder. Configure the client deadline to allow the response to arrive if you intend to wait synchronously; the appropriate margin depends on your application, and PagePeeker does not publish a universal safe value.
Do not treat wait as a guaranteed capture duration or as proof that the target has finished loading. The reviewed documentation does not state a universal maximum capture time, nor does it publish retry or backoff values.

Use published rendering speeds as context, not guarantees
PagePeeker’s product pages describe typical rendering speeds by tier. These vendor-published figures have no publication date visible on the pages and are not a promise for a particular URL.

| Tier | Typical speed stated by PagePeeker | Cache information stated by PagePeeker |
|---|---|---|
| Free, branded | 30–60 seconds | 20 days |
| Free, unbranded | 10–20 seconds | 20 days |
| Basic | 10–20 seconds | 7 days |
| Advanced | 5–15 seconds | 5 days |
| Premium | Under 5 seconds | Customizable |
These are descriptions of typical plan behavior, not measurements of your target site or a guarantee that upgrading will fix a specific slow capture. PagePeeker’s pricing page currently lists Basic at $5.99/month and Advanced at $39.99/month, with Premium custom priced; check the official pricing page for current prices.
Inspect response headers and final destination
Paid and unbranded accounts are documented as receiving diagnostic headers. Record them for a slow or failed request where available:

A placeholder after a configured wait is not, by itself, proof of a particular underlying error. Check the available error header and readiness status; PagePeeker does not document a universal mapping from each placeholder to a specific cause.
Use readiness polling instead of holding one request open
When a long synchronous wait does not suit your service, PagePeeker documents a refresh, check, and download flow. A refresh call starts regeneration, the readiness endpoint reports whether the thumbnail is available, and your application downloads the image once ready.
- Request the V2 thumbnail with
refresh=1to force regeneration on a premium account. - Poll the documented
thumbs_ready.phpendpoint for that thumbnail. Its JSON response containsError(1if thumbnail creation errored, otherwise0) andIsReady(1when the screenshot can be retrieved, otherwise0). - When
IsReadyis1, fetch the thumbnail. IfErroris1, handle it as a creation error rather than continuing to wait indefinitely.
The documentation does not prescribe a polling interval or retry policy. Choose spacing and a stop condition appropriate to your application’s latency and API-call budget. PagePeeker says availability checks count as API calls, as do creating a new thumbnail and displaying an existing one; account for polling in usage.

Troubleshoot a slow or apparently timed-out request
- Request goes to an old endpoint: Change it to the V2 endpoint for your account’s entrypoint.
- Target URL contains query parameters or special characters: URL-encode the complete value of
urlso the request is parsed correctly. - Client times out before PagePeeker responds: Compare the client deadline with the optional
waitvalue. If synchronous waiting is appropriate, allow time for the response; otherwise use readiness polling. waitis ignored or unavailable: The documentation identifies it as premium-only. Confirm the account tier before relying on it.- The response contains a placeholder: Check
X-PP-Errorwhere available, then check readiness. A placeholder alone does not identify the cause. - Capture duration looks unexpectedly high: Review
X-PP-Capture-TimeandX-PP-Final-URLwhere available. Compare repeat captures of a controlled set of URLs and retain the capture method, hash, timestamp, and errors for reproducible cases. - Polling increases usage: Availability checks count as API calls. Set a finite polling budget and stop on a reported error or when your application’s wait limit is reached.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is simply to get a screenshot without managing a browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

Frequently asked questions
Does PagePeeker publish a universal maximum capture timeout?
No universal maximum capture duration is stated in the V2 documentation reviewed. The premium-only wait parameter sets a wait before an image or placeholder is returned, not a guaranteed completion time.
Does every PagePeeker account get capture diagnostic headers?
The documentation describes these headers for paid and unbranded accounts; it does not establish that they are present on every account or response.
