VUPU was processor IP for ASIC and SoC development—not a consumer CPU for desktop PCs. The announcement’s main practical point was earlier software validation: Carbon’s virtual prototypes could run embedded operating systems before silicon existed, and EDN cited one customer design whose reported validation run fell from nine hours to 40 minutes.
What became available?
The offering paired Pacific Design’s VUPU processor model and instruction-set simulator with Carbon Design Systems’ VSP validation platform. In the October 28, 2005 report, VUPU was presented as a configurable processor for professional chip development. It was not described as a retail processor or a CPU upgrade for ordinary computers. EDN’s announcement is a historical report; it does not establish present-day ownership, pricing, licensing, support, or availability.
What Carbon’s VSP did
A virtual system prototype let engineers assemble and functionally validate a system on a desktop before the physical silicon was ready. Rather than requiring every component to use the same modeling detail, the workflow brought together models at different abstraction levels:
- C and SystemC models;
- register-transfer-level (RTL) blocks and IP cores;
- transaction-level models; and
- instruction-level processor models.
EDN said the prototypes could execute billions of cycles and boot embedded operating systems. That made it possible to begin system-level software work ahead of silicon while retaining detailed hardware models where needed. The report describes a validation approach, not a guarantee that every design or workload would run at a particular speed.

How VUPU worked
VUPU combined a general-purpose RISC processing unit with one or more variable-cycle data-path execution units, which Pacific Design called VUs. The RISC unit handled general-purpose processing; the VUs were configurable to accelerate a design’s selected data-path work.
Configure the data-path units
Designers could profile software with Pacific’s MAX profiler and use the results to configure VUs. Alternatively, they could supply predefined RTL macros for the data-path units. The reported setup therefore allowed the processor’s acceleration hardware to reflect either profiled software needs or user-provided RTL.

Represent VUPU in a virtual prototype
In the VSP, VUPU was represented by an instruction-set simulator, while VU hardware and other RTL blocks were compiled into virtual silicon models. This allowed software execution and hardware modeling to participate in the same prototype without treating every component as a conventional instruction-level CPU model.
What the nine-hour-to-40-minute result means
EDN quoted one recent customer design in which software validation took nine hours on a “popular EDA simulator” and 40 minutes on a VSP. The article does not name the simulator, describe the workload or test conditions, or establish that the result generalizes to other designs. It is a customer example reported in 2005, not a universal benchmark or a modern performance comparison.

Why the announcement mattered to chip teams
The significance was the combination of earlier software readiness and mixed-level modeling. A team could run embedded software on a desktop prototype before fabrication, while combining processor instruction models with RTL and other system models. VUPU added a configurable processor option whose data-path units could be tailored after profiling or supplied as RTL.
For readers looking for a current product to buy, the announcement should be treated as historical context: it does not verify that VUPU or Carbon’s VSP platform is sold, licensed, or supported today.
