Configure them as two separate destinations: use the server URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room for YouTube, and your own Owncast host, RTMP port, path, and key for Owncast. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Then test your Airtel connection’s sustained upload and keep the outgoing bitrate below what it can reliably sustain.
Owncast and YouTube use different RTMP settings
Owncast and YouTube are separate ingest destinations, not two names for the same server. Each requires its own endpoint and stream key. Do not paste the YouTube key into Owncast or substitute Owncast’s address for YouTube’s. If your encoder supports multiple outputs, configure a separate output for each destination and check how that software handles simultaneous streams; neither service’s cited setup guidance establishes a universal one-click relay between them.
| Setting | YouTube Live | Owncast |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint | Copy the current server URL from YouTube Live Control Room; YouTube recommends RTMPS. | Default: rtmp://your-owncast-host:1935/live. Replace the hostname with your reachable Owncast host. |
| Stream key | Copy the key from YouTube Live Control Room. | Use the key configured for your Owncast server. Enter it separately, or append it as /live/<key> if the encoder accepts only one URL. |
| Server that must be reachable | YouTube’s ingest service, using its provided stream details. | Your Owncast host, with incoming RTMP reachable on its configured port. |
| Where to check first if that output fails | Refresh YouTube’s stream details and check its current encoder diagnostics. | Check the Owncast hostname, port, path, key, server status, and firewall or security rules. |

Configure the Owncast destination
- Find your Owncast host and key. Use the hostname that your encoder can reach and the stream key configured for your Owncast instance.
- Enter the RTMP destination. Owncast’s default incoming endpoint is
rtmp://your-owncast-host:1935/live, with the key entered in the encoder’s stream-key field. If your encoder requires a single URL, Owncast documents appending the key as/live/<key>. - Check reachability. Owncast listens for incoming RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default. The listening port can be changed in Owncast’s admin configuration, so use the configured port if yours differs. Your server host and any firewall or security rules must allow the required traffic.
- Keep the web interface separate from RTMP. Owncast’s web interface defaults to port 8080. It is not the RTMP ingest port. If viewers need to reach the web interface, make sure its port or reverse-proxy route is reachable too.
Owncast’s manual install guide covers server installation and network reachability.

Set an encoder profile that Owncast documents
Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for compatibility, with a keyframe every two seconds. Its suggested starting points are:
| Resolution | Frame rate | Video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1080 | 60 fps | 5000 kbps |
| 1920×1080 | 30 fps | 4500 kbps |
| 1280×720 | 60 fps | 4000 kbps |
| 1280×720 | 30 fps | 3000 kbps |
These are Owncast suggestions, not Airtel-tested profiles or a guarantee that a particular server and connection can sustain them. A documented 720p30 starting point is 3000 kbps video; lower the resolution or bitrate if your test stream is unstable. Owncast lists 96, 128, 192, 256, and 320 kbps as example audio bitrates, from low through highest quality. Select an audio bitrate appropriate to your stream rather than treating the top example as mandatory.

Keyframes and encoder fields
- OBS: Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; Owncast advises against leaving it on Auto.
- FFmpeg: The
-goption counts frames, so use twice the frame rate for a two-second interval: for example, 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. - Server capacity: Match the profile to the Owncast server’s processing capacity and the quality you intend to serve. Increasing bitrate consumes more upload bandwidth and does not improve quality indefinitely.
Owncast’s full broadcasting instructions provide its encoder guidance.
Set the YouTube destination from Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the current stream URL and stream key shown for your broadcast.
- Configure a distinct encoder output for YouTube. Use YouTube’s provided server URL and key; do not reuse the Owncast endpoint or key.
- Use RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends, and follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the broadcast.
- Test the YouTube output separately before relying on simultaneous delivery to Owncast and YouTube. If one destination fails, that separation makes it easier to identify which endpoint or key needs attention.
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and bitrate guidance are published at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose bitrate using Airtel upload performance, not the advertised plan tier
Airtel’s advertised broadband tiers—including examples up to 40, 100, 300 Mbps and 1 Gbps—do not establish the sustained upload bitrate available on your individual line at stream time. Airtel’s terms include 90th-percentile upload measurements for certain tiers; those are population measurements, not a prediction or guarantee for a particular household. Airtel also notes that speeds can vary with congestion and technical factors. Check the current plan terms at Airtel broadband terms and Airtel Xstream Fiber terms and conditions.
- Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to your planned stream, including the time of day and other household internet use.
- Choose a bitrate below the upload capacity your connection consistently sustains. Leave headroom for variation and other traffic; do not set the encoder to consume the full result of one speed test.
- Run an actual test stream and watch the encoder’s network or dropped-frame indicators. Lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot hold steady.
- If you send directly to both Owncast and YouTube, account for the combined outgoing traffic. This is a network-planning consequence of sending separate outputs; neither provider specifies an Airtel-specific dual-output bitrate.
YouTube explicitly recommends testing upload bitrate in its live encoder guidance. A speed test is a snapshot, so use the live test to judge whether the selected settings remain stable.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Troubleshoot a stream that will not connect or keeps disconnecting
- Check the destination and key. Verify that each output has the matching URL and key: YouTube’s platform-provided details in the YouTube output, and your Owncast hostname, port,
/livepath, and Owncast key in the Owncast output. - Check Owncast server reachability. Confirm Owncast is running and TCP 1935 reaches the server unless you changed its RTMP listening port. If the Owncast website is also inaccessible, check its default web port 8080 or your reverse-proxy route separately.
- Check upload stability and bitrate. Run an upload test and monitor the encoder during a real stream. Reduce bitrate or resolution if upload varies or the encoder reports network drops. Owncast lists unstable networks and bitrate beyond sustainable upload among causes of disconnection.
- Test over Ethernet. Connect the encoder computer to the Airtel router with a network cable to see whether Wi-Fi instability contributes. Airtel recommends a wired connection for troubleshooting. It will not fix upstream congestion, an excessive bitrate, blocked server ports, or server processing limits.
- Isolate the failing destination. If only Owncast fails, inspect its server, firewall or security rules, address, port, and key. If only YouTube fails, refresh YouTube’s provided stream settings and follow its current encoder diagnostics.
Airtel’s home connection troubleshooting guidance recommends testing with a network cable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an Owncast hosting setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. See StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
