That is the author’s rounded estimate—not a universal voice-AI rate or an independently audited bill. Most of the listed cost comes from text-to-speech and estimated self-hosted overhead, rather than the language model.
How does a 2.5-cent voice AI minute add up?
The estimate combines a Telnyx SIP trunk connected to LiveKit SIP, xAI streaming speech recognition and text-to-speech, Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite, local turn detection, and self-hosted agent workers and Redis for session state. The author’s per-minute calculation assumes about 600 characters of agent speech, 3,000 input tokens and 175 output tokens.

Which part of the bill matters most?
Speech length drives the largest priced line
Under the 600-character assumption, text-to-speech costs about $0.009 per minute—the largest individually priced service in this calculation. If the agent speaks more or less, the TTS portion changes with the amount of generated speech, so a useful comparison should use a realistic estimate of how much the agent says on an average connected minute.

The model charge is small in this particular estimate
Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite contributes about $0.0004 per minute under the stated token volumes and rates. That is much less than the reported TTS line, but it does not establish that language-model costs are always negligible: different models, token use and prices produce different results. Sharma’s advice for choosing among the LLM options discussed is: “Pick it for latency and quality, not price.” That is guidance tied to this breakdown, not a general finding about every voice-agent deployment.
How does this compare with managed voice-agent costs?
The article reports a prior managed setup at roughly $0.10 per minute, a managed default around $0.11 per minute, and a LiveKit Cloud calculator default around $0.048 per minute. These are comparison figures reported by the article, not a controlled, like-for-like price survey. A managed default, a calculator estimate and a custom stack may include different services and assumptions.

Before comparing a vendor quote with the $0.025 estimate, align the cost basis. Check whether each figure is for inbound or outbound calls, which geography and carrier rates apply, how silence is billed, how much of each minute is agent speech, expected token volume, and whether platform, SIP, hosting, observability and support are included. A lower displayed per-minute number can omit costs that the other quote includes.

A longer Axionry analysis describes a scenario in which its estimated list-price subtotal falls to $0.0199 per minute after self-hosting workers, bringing its own SIP trunk, changing STT and using Flash-Lite. It then adds an estimated $0.0051 for workers, state, logs and observability to reach about $0.025. The same analysis estimates break-even at around 20,000 monthly minutes, given its assumed fixed infrastructure and engineering-maintenance costs.

That 20,000-minute figure is a scenario, not a general threshold. A build-versus-buy calculation depends on the particular managed quote, monthly usage, fixed infrastructure, engineering time and ongoing maintenance. Include the value of people’s time and the operational work required to keep the custom system running; comparing only variable API charges can make a custom deployment look cheaper than its full cost.

What to compare before choosing a stack
- Full loaded cost: Calculate cost per connected minute with carrier, platform, inference, hosting, logs, observability and support accounted for.
- Call profile: Match direction, geography, silence billing, average agent speech and token usage.
- Quality and responsiveness: Compare latency and voice quality as well as price; this estimate’s small LLM line alone does not determine which model is the right fit.
- Operating effort: Account for engineering setup, infrastructure ownership and ongoing maintenance when comparing custom and managed options.
