The short answer depends on what “hold their value” means. If the question is which of these selected complete copies has the higher current guide figure, PS2 leads in the two matched-title examples below, and its sampled horror titles have very high guide values. If the question is which platform has earned the better return since launch, these snapshots cannot answer it. Original Xbox also has expensive exceptions, so neither console can be reduced to a simple “valuable” or “cheap” label.

For the two same-title comparisons available here, the PS2 complete-copy guide value is higher than the original Xbox value. That is useful evidence when assessing those particular editions and conditions, but two games cannot establish a rule for either platform’s entire library.

The same-title comparison is more informative than comparing unrelated games because it holds the game name constant. It still does not isolate platform as the only difference: a specific copy’s region, edition, condition, contents, and sale circumstances matter. Nor does a higher guide value show which version produced a better return for someone who bought it at launch. Futurama complete is listed at $449.99 for PS2 and $382.48 for Xbox, while Silent Hill 4: The Room complete is listed at $199.48 for PS2 and $79.48 for Xbox. These are guide comparisons of matching named titles, not proof that every edition of one game is interchangeable or that the listed values will be realized in a transaction.
Condition tiers also make a substantial practical difference within each pair. The selected PS2 horror examples have four-figure complete-copy guide values, while the Xbox examples show that the original Xbox library also has notable high-value collectibles. These examples illustrate the range; they do not prove that a platform’s average game is valuable.

These figures also illustrate why completeness needs a precise definition. If you own only one component, compare it with the corresponding component category rather than using the complete-copy value as an estimate. Conversely, if a listing claims to be complete, check photographs for the disc, case, artwork, and manual instead of relying on the title of the listing.

For collectors searching for a physical North American copy, terms such as “Kuon PS2 complete in box,” “Rule of Rose PS2 complete in box,” or “Rule of Rose PS2 original manual” can help distinguish a complete set from an individual component. A search phrase is only a way to find listings; it does not verify that a listing is available, authentic, or accurately described. Confirm the platform, region, stated condition, and actual photographs before treating an offer as comparable to a guide category.

Does a current price show which platform held value better?
No. A current price is a point-in-time estimate; value retention is a change measured against an earlier value over a defined period. The available figures support comparisons among selected North American copies, not a measured, platform-wide return since release.
To calculate a meaningful percentage of original purchase value, a comparison would need a consistently defined basket of games, historical purchase prices, later sale values, and controls for condition, region, edition, and transaction costs. Fees, shipping, damage, authentication risk, and inflation can also affect what a seller actually retains or what a buyer effectively pays. The available guide snapshots do not supply the matched historical data needed to settle that broader comparison or make a forward price forecast.
The distinction is important if you are deciding whether to buy as a collector or as an investor. The guide figures are present-day estimates for named condition categories; they do not state what an original buyer paid at release or how much that person would net after selling costs. - Inspect what is actually included. For a complete copy, check photographs of the original disc, case, artwork, and manual, along with any claimed extras.
