Order of the Sinking Star is a large-scale single-player puzzle adventure from Thekla, Inc., directed by Jonathan Blow. Despite the assigned “10 Hours With” framing, the available hands-on account documents a demo, not a verified ten-hour playthrough of the released game. Steam and Nintendo list an October 8, 2026 launch; the US PlayStation Store still gives the PS5 release date as “to be determined.”

What is Order of the Sinking Star?

It is a puzzle adventure built around exploration, characters with distinct abilities, and four connected worlds whose puzzle rules eventually overlap. Blow is known for Braid and The Witness; Steam credits Arc Games and Gamirror Games as publishers.

The central design idea is not simply to solve isolated grid puzzles. Players move between regions, learn their mechanics, and use characters’ abilities to manipulate objects, beams, reflections, and hazards. When characters and worlds meet, previously separate systems can interact.

What does the hands-on preview actually show?

In a PlayStation Blog demo report published July 21, 2026, contributor Corey Brotherson describes beginning with the Queen and learning object-pushing on a grid, alongside undo and rewind. The demo then opens into several directions rather than following only one puzzle path.

Distinct characters and puzzle systems

  • Hearty Heroes: Warrior Valens pushes objects, thief Tif pulls them, and wizard Isidore swaps places with objects in line of sight.
  • The Promise: Coloured beams power abilities, adding beam-routing rules to the puzzle-solving.
  • Mirror Isles: A trader can swap places with a projected reflection.

Brotherson reports that the puzzles add enemies and new abilities without introducing combat. Several hours into the demo, characters from different regions begin combining their powers. The fourth region was not available in that demo, so the preview offers a partial look at how the systems fit together, not a complete account of the final game.

Is the “10 Hours With” claim supported?

Not by the available hands-on evidence. The documented account covers a demo and describes developments several hours into that demo; it does not establish ten hours played in the released game, or even a ten-hour run in a final build. It would be misleading to present those observations as a full ten-hour review.

There is also no verified typical completion time. Steam and Nintendo describe more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles and hundreds of hours of unique gameplay; the official game site says more than 500 hours await the most dedicated solvers. Those are publisher or developer scale claims, not independent measurements of how long most players will take. PlayStation Blog’s July preview separately described 900+ levels. The figures use different descriptions and should not be treated as a single independently verified count.

What should puzzle-game fans expect?

The preview points to a game that asks players to understand several rule sets and then reason across them. Pushing, pulling, swapping, beam-based abilities, reflections, and hazards are not just variations on one mechanic: the interest comes from learning what each character or region permits, then finding new combinations as the worlds connect.

That ambition fits Blow’s stated view of puzzle design. In a PC Gamer interview published January 7, 2026, he said: “One thing that I used to try to tell people is, ‘Look, if you’re making a puzzle game—if it’s just a difficulty challenge that’s not really that interesting, you want it to be about something and you want what it’s about to be good.” That is a statement of design philosophy, not an independent verdict on whether the finished game succeeds.
