You do not need to solve every challenge in sequence: explore another route when you get stuck, experiment with one idea at a time, and return when you have learned more.
What kind of game is Order of the Sinking Star?
Developed by Thekla Inc. and directed by Jonathan Blow, Order of the Sinking Star is a narrative puzzle adventure. The official game site describes “over one thousand interconnected, hand-crafted puzzles,” distinct playable heroes, evolving mechanics, and a central mystery. That puzzle count is the developer’s promotional description, not an independently audited total.
Steam describes four worlds, each with its own mechanics, characters, and stories. Their puzzle systems eventually intersect, so a rule or idea learned in one part of the game may become relevant elsewhere. Steam also uses promotional language such as “dozens” of mechanics and “hundreds” of hours of gameplay; those are scale descriptions, not a measured completion-time estimate.
How should a new player approach the puzzles?
Learn the rule before trying to solve everything
Early puzzles can be treated as lessons in how the game works. Notice what changes when you move a character or object, then test one possible explanation at a time. If you change several things at once, it is harder to tell which action caused the result.

Explore instead of forcing a blocked route
The Steam game listing presents the experience as flexible: players can explore at their own pace and revisit challenges. When a puzzle stops making sense, note what you have tried, move to another available route, and come back after encountering more of the game’s mechanics.
Use undo to test ideas carefully
A PlayStation Blog hands-on preview describes grid-like locations, pushing objects, and an undo or rewind mechanic introduced in the opening. Where undo is available, it can help you test a reversible idea. Still, pause before a move that appears likely to trap a character or object: a preview report is not a guarantee that every situation in the final game can be reversed.

Ask for the smallest useful hint
Give yourself time to observe the puzzle before seeking help. If you need a nudge, look for a hint that points toward the relevant rule or interaction rather than a full move-by-move solution. That keeps more of the discovery intact in a game whose official descriptions emphasize curiosity and gradually developing mechanics.
Which controls and platforms are available?
The official Steam community FAQ says the demo supports mouse and keyboard or a controller/gamepad. Thekla has also announced Steam Deck Verified status and controls and interface optimized for handheld use. These are options, not reasons to buy an extra controller or handheld.

Announced platforms are PC via Steam and Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. The Nintendo listing describes its Switch 2 edition as digital and supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes; a physical console-game edition was not established in the available official listing.

Does the free demo progress carry over?
The Steam demo is listed as free and released on June 15, 2026. The developer’s Steam community FAQ states that progress in the demo carries over to the Steam full release. That confirmation is specifically about Steam; cross-platform save transfer between Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 is not confirmed by the cited information.

At the time of writing, the scheduled launch is October 8, 2026, with some regions receiving it on October 9 because of time zones. In an October 5 launch announcement, Fero, writing for the official game news site, said it would launch on PC via Steam and Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. Check the relevant storefront for live availability in your region.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing too many variables at once: Test one idea so you can learn from the result.
- Staying with one puzzle after progress has stopped: Make a note and explore another route; the game allows challenges to be revisited.
- Opening a complete solution immediately: Try observation or a small hint first if you want to preserve the puzzle’s discovery.
- Assuming a controller is required: Mouse and keyboard are supported alongside gamepad input on Steam.
- Expecting demo saves to move between platforms: The stated carryover applies to the Steam demo and Steam full release; other platform transfers are not confirmed.
- Trusting unverified walkthrough specifics: Treat exact room counts, world orders, or detailed progression claims from unofficial guides cautiously unless backed by an official source.
