What is Orchestrator for MySQL?
Orchestrator is software for managing MySQL replication topologies and high availability. Its documented features go beyond showing server health: it can discover and map replication relationships, account for replication rules and GTID or Pseudo-GTID arrangements, refactor replica relationships, and detect and recover from failures involving a master or an intermediate master. It provides a command-line tool, an HTTP API, and a web interface.
These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that an automated operation will be safe in every environment. Outcomes depend on the replication mode, topology, configuration, and operational procedures. The project is licensed under Apache License 2.0, as stated by its repository and Go package documentation.
How does Orchestrator handle MySQL failover?
Orchestrator’s documented approach uses knowledge of the replication topology to support failure detection and recovery, including replica promotion. GitHub Engineering’s 2016 account offers a historical example of that approach: it described checking the master alongside expected replicas and considering whether replication was actually broken, rather than treating repeated failures to probe the master as sufficient evidence on their own.

In that account, if Orchestrator could not reach the master but the replicas were reachable and continuing to make replication progress, GitHub treated that as evidence that there was no failure scenario requiring failover. When a failover was warranted, the account said candidate selection took replication rules and server configuration into account. It also described a control to block repeated automated failovers for a cluster for a configured period, limiting flapping.
Those details describe GitHub’s deployment in 2016, not a universal configuration or a statement about GitHub’s current infrastructure. The article said GitHub expected detection and recovery within 30 seconds or less in its described environment. It also gave 30 minutes as an example period during which that deployment blocked another automated failover for a cluster. Neither figure is a general benchmark or a project-wide default.

Is GitHub Orchestrator still maintained?
GitHub’s repository page redirects to openark/orchestrator. The repository is marked archived and read-only, with an archive date of February 18, 2025. Its notice invites people interested in maintaining the code base to fork percona/orchestrator and submit pull requests there.
That notice is a direction from the archived repository, not confirmation that the Percona fork is actively maintained or commercially supported. Check the fork’s current activity, release information, and support terms before choosing it for a new or existing deployment. The available project-history documentation records development at openark from 2020 onward; it does not support describing GitHub as the current maintainer.

What happened to github/orchestrator?
Outbrain is credited as the project’s original author. GitHub Engineering’s 2016 article described GitHub adopting it as an upstream project that would accept community issues and pull requests. Go package documentation records the historical GitHub repository path from 2016 through 2020, then development at openark from 2020 onward. The later archive notice directs prospective maintenance collaboration toward Percona.
The Go package page lists version 3.2.5+incompatible as published May 27, 2021; that is historical version information, not evidence that it is the latest release. For present-day use, distinguish the project’s documented capabilities and history from the maintenance status of the particular repository or fork you plan to rely on.

What to verify before deploying it
A topology-aware failover tool can make consequential changes to production replication. Before relying on Orchestrator, evaluate the deployment against your own recovery and data-integrity requirements. The project’s broad feature descriptions alone do not establish behavior for every database version or topology.
- Confirm which MySQL versions, replication modes, and topology patterns your intended Orchestrator build supports.
- Decide whether failover will be automatic or require operator approval, and define how candidate replicas should be selected.
- Assess the possibility of data loss or divergence under your asynchronous or semi-synchronous replication setup.
- Review the deployment’s failure-detection, anti-flapping, and recovery configuration, and test procedures in an environment where an incorrect promotion will not harm production.
- Establish who maintains the code you deploy and what support, if any, is available for that specific fork.
- Plan how operators will use the CLI, HTTP API, or web interface and how those interfaces fit your existing operational controls.
GitHub’s engineering account is useful for understanding one historical design and deployment, but it is not a substitute for validating current software behavior and recovery procedures in your environment.
