Its main distinction is a locking FAKRA-Z connection for GMSL2 alongside USB Type-C, giving system designers a manufacturer-rated cable run of up to 15 m over GMSL2 without extension cables. Orbbec describes the camera as rugged, but that is a design claim—not a guarantee of performance in every installation.
What is the Gemini 335Lg?
The Gemini 335Lg is a stereo vision camera that produces depth data as well as RGB images. Orbbec introduced it at ROSCon 2024 for robotics applications including warehouse and factory automation, bin picking, and palletizing. The company cited NVIDIA Jetson, ROS and ROS 2 support, and demonstrated the camera with a Universal Robots AI Accelerator. Those launch-era compatibility claims should not substitute for checking the current support list for a particular host and system configuration. Orbbec’s announcement includes the dated launch details.
The name’s “Lg” marks the GMSL2/FAKRA version of the related Gemini 335L. Both are in the same camera family and use Orbbec’s unified SDK, but the 335Lg adds GMSL2 connectivity to USB Type-C. Orbbec’s Gemini 335L page describes the related model.
What GMSL2 and FAKRA change for a robot installation
GMSL2 is the long-run connection option. Orbbec lists up to 6 Gbps bandwidth and a connection length of up to 15 m without extension cables; its listed USB Type-C connection is up to 3 m without extensions. These are manufacturer-published interface figures, not independent measurements. A longer camera cable can help when the camera is mounted away from a robot computer, but the host still needs a compatible GMSL2 deserializer and a supported platform.

FAKRA-Z is the connector used for the camera’s GMSL2 link. Orbbec presents its locking connection as a fit for robotics systems where a secured cable connection is useful. That is a design rationale, not proof that a cable cannot loosen or be damaged in a particular moving installation. For an external GMSL2 cable, Orbbec requires coaxial FAKRA cable because the module uses Power over Coax. Its cable guide, updated September 3, 2025, specifies 0–6 GHz, 50 Ω ±2 Ω, and rated current of at least 1 A.
Choose the cable for the route, not just the connector
Orbbec lists common maximum lengths of 5 m for RG174 and 15 m for Dacar 302/RG58. Cable flexibility, bend radius, transmission characteristics, and whether the route is fixed or moves with the robot all affect suitability; confirm the exact cable and installation with the system supplier. The manufacturer lists a FAKRA-Z-to-FAKRA-Z cable in the camera package, but that included cable does not establish that it suits every routing requirement.

Do not treat the theoretical maximum depth as the expected working distance: Orbbec separately lists the 0.17–20 m+ depth range and a 0.25–6 m ideal range. The selected figures and power conditions are listed on the Gemini 335Lg product page and Orbbec Store listing.

Ruggedness and environmental limits
Orbbec rates the camera IP65 and describes vibration resistance and industrial EMC compliance. The rating is conditional: the manufacturer says IP65-compliant cables must be used while the camera is powered to achieve that protection. Assess the assembled camera, cable, connector, mounting, and enclosure together rather than assuming the housing rating applies to an installation with any cable attached. The published operating-temperature limits also vary with frame rate, as shown above. These design specifications do not establish guaranteed reliability in every factory, washdown, vibration, or outdoor scenario.
Power, host and multi-camera checks before buying
GMSL2 and USB have different power requirements, and the GMSL2 requirements vary with the laser energy setting. Orbbec specifies 12 V and at least 0.7 A for best performance at laser energy level 6, or 12 V and at least 0.5 A for default level 4. For USB, it specifies 5 V and at least 1.5 A. Confirm that the camera, host, deserializer and power arrangement match the intended mode and setting.

Before choosing the 335Lg, check the following against Orbbec’s current store listing and linked platform-support document:
- Whether the exact host platform and GMSL2 deserializer are supported.
- Whether the selected cable length and type suit the route, including any moving cable section.
- Whether the required depth distance, resolution and frame rate fit the application.
- Whether the complete cable installation meets the required protection level.
- Whether the system can supply the required voltage and current at the intended laser energy setting.
- Whether multiple cameras need synchronization and the host supports the intended setup.
There is a discrepancy in Orbbec’s published synchronized-camera count. The current product page and store say up to 8 cameras to the host, while the October 2024 launch announcement said up to 16. Treat 8 as the current published figure, but obtain confirmation from Orbbec for the specific host and synchronization configuration rather than relying on either number as a guarantee.

Where the Gemini 335Lg fits
The 335Lg is most relevant when a robotics design needs stereo depth and wants a GMSL2 cable route longer than the manufacturer’s listed 3 m USB run, or values the FAKRA-Z connection. If the camera can be mounted close to its host and USB is sufficient, compare the related 335L and confirm the exact interface and system requirements. The 335Lg’s cable reach alone does not establish compatibility: host support, deserializer, power, cable construction, and environmental installation all need to line up.
