An anonymous Reddit post, later retold by FAIL Blog, alleges that the poster’s father was laid off from Oracle by email about two years before he planned to retire. The post also says he had cancer and lost employer health insurance. These are claims attributed to the poster, not independently verified facts.
What did the Reddit post say?
The post’s title was “After 20 years and 2 years before retirement, my dad just got laid off via Email.” As reproduced by India Today, the poster asked: “What is he supposed to do for the next 2 years?” The post alleged that the father had worked for the same boss for 20 years, was nearing retirement, had cancer and no longer had health insurance after the layoff.
The Economic Times reported further details attributed to a comment by the poster: that the father received a text telling him to read his email, and that his severance was 26 weeks from the last payroll date. Those details, too, come from the Reddit account and have not been independently confirmed in the available reporting.
What is known—and what remains unverified?
India Today said it could not independently verify the account. The available reports do not establish the identities of the poster or employee, where the employee worked, the terms of any benefits plan, or what happened to him afterward. They also do not provide an official account of the termination.

Does the account establish a legal violation or company-wide policy?
No. The reporting does not provide the facts needed to determine whether the reported termination was lawful, whether a particular benefit plan covered the employee, or whether the account reflects Oracle’s broader practices. It should not be treated as proof of discrimination, unlawful termination or a company-wide health-insurance policy.
Because the employee’s location and plan terms are unknown, the reports also cannot support a case-specific recommendation about continued coverage, replacement insurance or retirement income. Those questions depend on jurisdiction, eligibility, plan documents and the employee’s circumstances.
