Neither optical discs nor cartridges are universally better for a DIY game console. Choose after you have defined the target board, the amount of game data, how the game will access it, and the hardware you are prepared to integrate. Discs can offer more removable-media capacity but require a compatible drive; cartridges provide a direct solid-state interface and can avoid a moving optical mechanism.

How the two media types change the console design

Optical discs

A disc build needs more than a disc: it needs a compatible optical drive, an interface the target board can use, suitable power, physical mounting, and software support. An externally powered USB drive box is one possible approach described in a Raspberry Pi Official Magazine retro CD-ROM console project. That example shows a build path, not guaranteed compatibility with every board or operating system.

Cartridges

A cartridge build connects solid-state storage to the console through a connector and electrical interface. The design still has to specify the storage device, bus, connector, and save strategy, but it can avoid integrating a disc drive and its moving parts.

What historical console figures can—and cannot—tell you

Specifications from past consoles illustrate possible differences, but they are not a controlled comparison of interchangeable media or modern DIY components.

Example Capacity Access or transfer figure What the figure describes
GameCube proprietary 3-inch optical disc Approximately 1.5 GB 128 ms average access time; 16–25 Mbps transfer speed Nintendo’s official GameCube technical details; publication date not stated on the page. Nintendo specifications
Nintendo 64 cartridge Up to 64 MB for the largest marketed cartridge, according to the retrospective 5 MB/sec average bandwidth Values reported in a technical architecture retrospective; publication date not stated in the retrieved result. Copetti.org Nintendo 64 architecture

Keep the units and context intact: megabits per second (Mbps) and megabytes per second (MB/sec) are different units, and average access time is not a transfer rate. These particular figures describe different historical console systems, so they do not establish that every cartridge is faster than every disc.

Optical formats also vary. Ecma International lists 385 MB for the ECMA-223 90 mm optical disk cartridge format, a standard published in 1993. That is a distinct format, not a conventional game disc or a general benchmark for disc-based consoles. Ecma International ECMA-223

Compare the requirements that matter to your build

How much data must each game hold?

Start with the game files you actually plan to distribute. The GameCube and N64 figures show that capacity depends on the specific format and design; neither historical number predicts what a modern drive or cartridge module can store. Specify the capacity of the chosen media and account for any filesystem, metadata, or reserved space your implementation requires.

Will the game load files or stream data?

Access patterns affect the experience as much as headline transfer figures. If the game must stream assets while running, verify sustained reads and seek behavior on the specific drive or storage device, through the exact bus and software stack you intend to use. A quoted average from a historical console is not a substitute for testing that path.

Optical Drive Emulator SDL Kit for PS1 Fat Console - 3D Printed Case, Storage Card Support, Diskless Game Loading Module, Retro Gaming Accessories (with 32GB Storage Card)
  • High Speed Diskless Loading: This optical drive emulator replaces the original disc drive for PS1 consoles, enabling direct game loading from a storage card. It uses the console’s parallel I/O ports for faster data transfer, reducing loading times and avoiding read errors caused by a worn or damaged optical head. Compatible with 99.9 percent of PS1 game titles.
  • Wide Console Compatibility: Designed for use with PS1 fat that include a parallel I/O port, including SCPH-1000, SCPH-1001, SCPH-1002, SCPH-3000, SCPH-3500, SCPH-5000, SCPH-5001, SCPH-7502, SCPH-7503, and others. Debug units (DTL-XXXX series) are also supported if they feature a parallel port. Not compatible with slim PS1 consoles or any model lacking a parallel port.
  • Versatile Storage and Format Support: Supports a wide range of storage cards from 8GB (SDHC) up to more than 512GB (SDXC). Reads BIN and ISO file formats, supports CDDA and XA sound channels, and handles multi CD ROM games. Load CD ROM images directly from the storage card, and hot swap cards within the on screen menu system for uninterrupted use.
  • Simple and Fast : The intuitive menu system allows quick software selection. Unlike traditional flashcarts, there is no need to burn images to a memory chip; ISO files load in seconds. To to a different game, simply press the console’s reset and select the new title from the menu. The durable 3D printed replacement case offers improved quality and a clean appearance.
  • Installation Requirements: Proper requires a compatible PS1 console with a parallel I/O connector. The included board must be soldered to the console’s motherboard following installation instructions. The original emulator case has been replaced by a custom 3D printed case for enhanced durability and fit. This kit is intended for advanced users familiar with console modification.

What can the target board connect to?

For discs, verify drive interface, power, mounting, and operating-system support. For cartridges, specify the connector, electrical levels, bus, and storage device. The cited build example supports the feasibility of an external-drive approach, but does not establish compatibility for an unspecified board.

Where will save data live?

Choose whether saves belong on the cartridge or in the console, and how they persist. The N64 used EEPROM, flash, and battery-backed SRAM as cartridge save-memory options, according to the N64 architecture account. Nintendo’s GameCube specifications list memory-card slots, an example of keeping saves separate from the game disc. Nintendo GameCube technical details

  • Easy to Use System: A simple menu system enables quick software selection without the burn-in process required by other flashcarts; game ISOs load in seconds, and switching games is as easy as pressing reset and selecting from the menu.

How much mechanical hardware do you want?

An optical implementation includes a drive mechanism and the associated power and mounting needs. A cartridge interface can eliminate that drive, although its storage and connector still need to be designed and sourced.

How many copies will you make?

Manufacturing cost depends on format, quantity, and sourcing; no current comparable price is established here. The N64 account says cartridges were more expensive to manufacture than optical media in that historical context, but that does not provide a present-day quote for a DIY production run.

A practical decision guide

  • Lean toward discs if your chosen format provides the capacity you need, removable media suits the project, and you can support the drive’s interface, power, mounting, and software requirements.
  • Lean toward cartridges if a direct solid-state connection and avoiding a disc mechanism fit the console, and you can define the connector, storage, and save approach.
  • Do not choose from old speed or capacity figures alone. Validate the actual medium, drive or storage chip, bus, board, and software path you plan to build.
