To turn on a hotspot on an OPPO phone, open Settings > Connection & sharing > Personal hotspot, then switch it on. If those labels are not on your phone, look under Settings > Other Wireless Connections > Personal Hotspot; the menu varies by ColorOS version and model. Set or check the hotspot name and password, then select that network in the Wi-Fi settings on your laptop, tablet or other device. The OPPO phone must have working mobile data for the connected device to reach the internet.
What do you need before turning on an OPPO hotspot?
Start by checking that mobile data is enabled on the OPPO phone and that the phone itself can access the internet over that connection. Personal Hotspot shares the phone’s mobile-data connection; it does not create internet access if the phone has none. This distinction helps separate a Wi-Fi joining problem from a problem with the phone’s connection to the internet.
For example, if a laptop connects to the OPPO hotspot but cannot load a webpage, first try using mobile data on the OPPO phone itself. If the phone also cannot get online, the laptop is not necessarily the cause: the hotspot can only share the connection available to the phone. If the phone can use mobile data but the laptop cannot, check the hotspot name and password on both devices and confirm the laptop is connected to the intended network.

The setup itself does not require a purchase; the optional wired method later in this guide does require a data-capable cable.

Where is Personal Hotspot in OPPO settings?
On a supported newer menu layout, go to Settings > Connection & sharing > Personal hotspot. On some older OPPO phones, the route is Settings > Other Wireless Connections > Personal Hotspot. OPPO uses these alternate paths in documentation for different software versions; one path should not be treated as universal for every model.
- Open Settings on the OPPO phone.
- Look for Connection & sharing. If it is not there, check Other Wireless Connections.
- Tap Personal hotspot or Personal Hotspot.
- Switch on the hotspot.
If neither route matches, use Settings search for “hotspot” or “tethering,” if your phone offers search. You can check software information under About phone or About device in Settings; exact labels and locations differ. Knowing the software version can help you interpret instructions written for a particular ColorOS release, but it does not guarantee that every documented control appears on your model.
When you open the hotspot page, look for the main Personal Hotspot switch and any accompanying settings or management controls. The first task is simply to enable the wireless network. You can then review the name and password before joining from another device. If your settings page has slightly different wording, use the closest hotspot or tethering entry rather than assuming the feature is missing because the label is not an exact match.
How do you change the OPPO hotspot name and password?
Open Personal hotspot and tap its settings option to view or change the network name and password. The other device uses these details to identify and join the hotspot. The network name is the entry you will look for in the other device’s Wi-Fi list; the password is the credential it asks for when you select that entry.
- On the OPPO phone, open the Personal Hotspot page using the route that matches your settings menu.
- Open Personal Hotspot Settings or the corresponding settings control shown on your phone.
- Review the displayed network name and password. If you change either value, save the changes if prompted.
- Keep the hotspot enabled while connecting the other device.
- On the laptop, tablet or other phone, choose the displayed network name and enter the current password.
If the connecting device reports that the password is incorrect, compare the entry with the password currently shown in the OPPO hotspot settings. Make sure you are selecting the intended network name, especially if several nearby networks have similar names. A remembered password on the laptop may no longer match if the OPPO password was changed; use the current value displayed by the phone.
Some ColorOS versions also show controls for blocked devices, the maximum number of connected devices, or data restrictions under Connection Management. These controls are version-dependent, so their absence does not necessarily mean the hotspot is unavailable. Likewise, do not assume a particular device limit: check the limit shown on your own phone if that control is present.
How do you share OPPO internet with a laptop or another device?
Use the hotspot as a Wi-Fi network: enable Wi-Fi on the laptop, tablet or other phone, select the name shown in the OPPO hotspot settings, and enter its password. The OPPO phone remains the device sharing its mobile-data connection; the laptop or tablet joins as a client over Wi-Fi.

- Confirm that the OPPO phone can access the internet using mobile data.
- Turn on Personal Hotspot on the OPPO phone.
- On the device you want to connect, open its Wi-Fi network list.
- Select the OPPO hotspot name.
- Enter the hotspot password and wait for the device to connect.
- Open a webpage or app on the connected device to confirm that internet access is working.
There are two separate things to confirm: whether the second device joined the hotspot’s Wi-Fi network, and whether it can reach the internet through the phone. A device that appears connected has established the wireless link, but this alone does not prove the OPPO phone has working mobile data. If the connection is joined but there is no internet, check mobile data on the OPPO phone first.
If the laptop or other device does not join, check that Personal Hotspot is still switched on, select the correct network name and enter the current password from the OPPO settings. If the phone has been sitting with no client connected, the idle shutoff described below may also be relevant. These checks address the documented setup and shutoff conditions; they are not a guaranteed fix for every device-specific Wi-Fi problem.
For a laptop, no special desktop application is described as necessary for the basic wireless setup: the laptop uses its ordinary Wi-Fi network list to select the hotspot. The same basic join process applies to a tablet or another phone with Wi-Fi. The exact screens and wording on the joining device depend on that device, not on the OPPO menu layout.
Why does an OPPO hotspot turn off by itself?
Two documented causes to check are an idle period with no connected device and a configured data restriction. OPPO’s ColorOS 11 User Guide states: “Personal Hotspot will automatically turn off after 10 minutes when no device is connected.” OPPO’s online support also identifies the ten-minute idle period as a possible shutoff cause. This is an operating interval, not a measured performance figure, and the available controls may vary by software version.
- No device is connected: If the hotspot sat idle, reconnect the laptop or other device. OPPO’s guide documents automatic shutoff after 10 minutes without a connected device.
- A data restriction was reached: Check the hotspot’s Connection Management settings for a data limit or restriction. The route and controls are not identical on every version. If a restriction is configured, reaching it can explain why sharing stops.
- The phone’s mobile-data connection is unavailable: Check whether the OPPO phone itself can use mobile data. A hotspot can share only the connection the phone has.
The ten-minute detail applies to the situation described in OPPO’s guide: no device is connected. It is not a general promise that every disconnect will occur at ten minutes, nor does it prove that every hotspot that switches off has an idle timer as its cause. Check whether a client is connected and whether a data restriction is configured before drawing that conclusion.
These checks explain some shutoffs, but they do not identify every disconnection or guarantee a fix for weak mobile reception. If the phone’s internet connection is unstable, the connected device may also lose access even while it remains joined to the hotspot. A visible Wi-Fi connection on the laptop and a working internet connection on the OPPO phone are different parts of the overall link.
Can you tether an OPPO phone to a computer by USB?
Yes. USB tethering is a separate, wired way to share the phone’s connection with a computer. It requires a data-capable cable; a cable that only charges the phone will not provide the required data connection. The cable must also fit the ports on both the OPPO phone and the computer, so check those ports before choosing one. Not every OPPO phone uses the same connector.

- Connect the OPPO phone to the computer with a data-capable cable that fits both devices.
- On the phone, open Settings > Connection & sharing > Personal hotspot, where this route is documented for ColorOS 13 and later.
- Enable USB tethering. The option may not be available until the phone is connected to another device.
- Check the computer’s connection after enabling tethering.
If the USB tethering option is unavailable before you attach the phone, connect the data cable first and then check the Personal Hotspot page again. OPPO’s support describes the option as unavailable until a device is connected. If choosing a cable, search for an OPPO phone USB data cable that matches the phone and computer ports; do not assume a charge-only lead is sufficient.
USB is useful when you want to connect the OPPO phone to one computer by cable. Wi-Fi Personal Hotspot is the straightforward option when a laptop, tablet or another phone can join a wireless network. OPPO’s ColorOS 11 manual also documents Bluetooth tethering and a separately named Wi-Fi Tethering setting, but availability and labels depend on the software version. Wi-Fi Direct is not another name for this mobile-data hotspot setup.
Which OPPO internet-sharing method should you use?
Choose based on the connecting device, whether a cable is practical, and which sharing menus are available on your software. The methods are not interchangeable menu names: Wi-Fi hotspot, USB tethering and Bluetooth tethering are distinct connection options. OPPO’s ColorOS 11 manual also lists a setting called Wi-Fi Tethering separately; the presence and exact wording of options can vary.
| Method | Connection | What you need | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Hotspot | Wi-Fi | A device with Wi-Fi and the hotspot password | A laptop, tablet or another phone needs to join wirelessly. |
| USB tethering | Wired | A data-capable cable that fits the phone and computer | You want to connect the OPPO phone to a computer by cable. |
| Bluetooth tethering | Bluetooth | Bluetooth support and the relevant menu on your software version | Your OPPO phone and the other device support the option. |
For the usual laptop or tablet setup, start with Personal Hotspot: it avoids choosing a cable and the other device joins by selecting a Wi-Fi network and entering its password. Choose USB tethering when a wired computer connection is preferred and you have a data-capable cable that fits both devices. Bluetooth tethering is another documented option on some software, but this guide does not establish that it appears on every model.
There is no universal speed, battery-life or device-count ranking established for these options. Do not choose a method based on an assumed speed advantage or assume one will always consume less power. Available settings can differ by phone and ColorOS version, so use the method and controls actually shown on your device. The basic wireless method does not require a cable or purchase; USB does require the appropriate cable.

What else should you check while using a hotspot?
Hotspot use consumes more power, so the OPPO phone may run down faster while sharing its connection. If you need to keep it running for a long session, having access to a charger or power bank is a practical precaution, not an OPPO-prescribed fix or a guaranteed remedy for connection problems.
Keep an eye on mobile-data use and any limit set in the phone’s hotspot management controls. The hotspot uses the phone’s mobile-data connection, so data consumed by connected devices is relevant to your plan. OPPO’s materials do not establish a universal carrier allowance, tethering permission or charge; check your own plan rather than relying on a general assumption.

If another device cannot join, verify the network name and password in the OPPO settings and make sure the hotspot remains enabled. If it joins but has no internet, verify mobile data on the OPPO phone. If the hotspot shuts off, check whether there was no connected device for ten minutes or a configured data restriction was reached. If the phone’s own mobile connection is unstable, that can affect internet access on devices sharing it.

Can other devices connect to an OPPO hotspot if the phone has no mobile data?
A device may be able to join the hotspot’s Wi-Fi network, but the hotspot will not provide internet through mobile data if the OPPO phone has no working mobile-data connection. Check internet access on the phone itself before troubleshooting the laptop or tablet.
How many devices can connect to an OPPO hotspot at once?
There is no single model-independent device limit established for OPPO phones. Some ColorOS versions expose a maximum-device control in Connection Management, so check the setting on your own phone.
Does OPPO hotspot sharing use Wi-Fi Direct?
Wi-Fi Direct is not another name for the Personal Hotspot setup described here. To share the phone’s mobile-data connection wirelessly, enable Personal Hotspot and have the other device join its Wi-Fi network.
Can I share an OPPO phone’s connection over USB?
Yes. USB tethering is a separate wired option for a computer. Connect the OPPO phone with a data-capable cable, then look for USB tethering under Settings > Connection & sharing > Personal hotspot on the documented ColorOS 13-and-later route. The option may appear only after a device is connected.
Does an OPPO hotspot cost anything to set up?
The basic Wi-Fi hotspot setup requires no purchase. It uses mobile data, however, and tethering eligibility or charges depend on your carrier plan. USB tethering requires a data-capable cable if you choose that separate method.
The Bottom Line
To share an OPPO phone’s internet wirelessly, enable Personal hotspot, set or check its name and password, and join it from the other device’s Wi-Fi list. Confirm mobile data works on the OPPO phone and check your plan’s tethering terms. If the hotspot switches off, look for the documented ten-minute idle shutoff or a configured data restriction. USB tethering is an optional wired alternative that requires a data-capable cable.
