Opera One R3, announced on January 15, 2026, focuses on two everyday browser problems: keeping related tabs identifiable and getting useful answers without leaving the page. You can now name and color-code Tab Islands, ask Opera’s rebuilt browser AI about the current page or island, and use new sidebar, split-screen and translation tools.
What is new in Opera One R3?
R3’s main changes are organizational and contextual rather than a visual redesign of every browser screen.
| Feature | What it does | Availability or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Named, color-coded Tab Islands | Labels tab groups and assigns each a handle color so groups are easier to recognize without opening them. | Opera One R3 |
| Rebuilt browser AI | Uses the current tab or its Tab Island as optional context for questions. | Must be enabled; Opera says it is free and can be used without an account. |
| YouTube questions | Answers questions about a YouTube video, such as its subject or where a moment occurs. | Opera AI feature |
| Gmail and Google Calendar sidebar apps | Places both services in the browser sidebar. | Enable them through sidebar setup. |
| Early Bird | Provides access to developing Opera One features. | Experimental features may need refinement. |
| Split screen | Displays as many as four tabs in horizontal, vertical or grid arrangements. | Opera’s detailed R3 post first described four-tab split screen as Early Bird; the current product page lists up to four pages as an R3 feature, so availability can depend on the build. |
| Other additions | Improved Easy Files, a toolbar-pinnable Music Player, built-in page translation and new themes. | Opera says the translator supports over forty languages. |
Opera says the rebuilt AI produces responses 20% faster. That is a company-reported figure from its January 2026 announcement; the announcement does not describe a measurement method or an independent benchmark.
How do I name or color-code Tab Islands?
Tab Islands are Opera’s groups for tabs that belong to the same browsing context. R3 adds two identifiers that make a crowded workspace easier to scan.

- Locate the Tab Island handle above the grouped tabs.
- Hover over the handle to open its popup menu.
- Choose the option to edit the island’s name, enter a label, and save it.
- Open the same popup menu again and choose a handle color.
Use names that describe the task rather than a site name alone—for example, “Trip planning,” “Invoices,” or “Research.” The color is a quick visual signal when several islands are open.
Can Opera AI read my open tabs?
Opera’s rebuilt browser AI can use the current web page or the Tab Island containing it as context, but Opera says this access is opt-in. You must enable the AI and specifically allow page-content access.
How context access works
- A new chat waits for your first prompt before accessing the page or island context.
- You can switch off the page-context option before writing the prompt.
- Opera says the AI engine does not receive general browsing activity or history.
- Opera says it does not automatically access open Google services.
These are Opera’s own descriptions of the feature and controls, not the result of an independent privacy audit. Check the context control each time your question involves sensitive material.

Can Opera’s AI summarize a YouTube video?
Yes. Opera says you can ask its AI about a YouTube video to understand the topic or find a particular moment. The useful distinction is that the question is grounded in the video page you have open, rather than requiring you to copy a transcript into a separate service.
For a better answer, ask a specific question such as “What are the three recommendations in this video?” or “When does the presenter discuss the pricing change?” Results can depend on the information available from the video page, so verify important claims against the video itself.
How do I put Gmail and Google Calendar in Opera’s sidebar?
- Open the Opera sidebar setup menu.
- Select Google services.
- Enable Gmail and Google Calendar.
- Use their sidebar icons to open the services without creating separate full browser tabs.
This is a convenience integration: the services remain Google web applications, while Opera supplies the sidebar entry point. Opera says its AI does not automatically access open Google services.

What is Early Bird in Opera One?
Early Bird is R3’s access path for features that are still being developed. Opera warns that these features may need refinement, so they are better suited to readers who are comfortable with changing behavior or occasional rough edges.
The detailed R3 announcement originally placed four-tab split screen in Early Bird. Opera’s current product page now promotes up to four pages as an R3 capability. That difference reflects rollout timing: the exact control you see can vary with your Opera One build and when the feature reached the stable channel.
How does four-way split screen work?
When the feature is available in your build, Opera can arrange up to four tabs at once. The documented layouts are:

Opera says its translator handles pages in over forty languages. The figure is a product claim from Opera’s January 2026 feature announcement, not an independently tested language-coverage count.
Easy Files
R3 includes improvements to Easy Files, Opera’s quick-access area for recently downloaded or selected files.

Who benefits most from Opera One R3?
- Researchers and planners: Named, colored islands make several projects easier to distinguish.
- Readers working from long pages: Optional page context lets the AI answer questions about the tab you are viewing.
- People juggling services: Gmail, Calendar and up to four split-screen pages reduce tab switching.
- Early adopters: Early Bird exposes work-in-progress features before they are fully refined.
R3 is less compelling if you want independently verified AI performance figures, a third-party privacy assessment, or a browser comparison based on controlled testing. The cited release materials establish Opera’s features and claims, not comparative performance against other browsers.
The Bottom Line
Opera One R3 makes Tab Islands easier to identify and gives its browser AI optional access to the tab or island you are working in. Gmail and Calendar sidebar apps, YouTube questions, Early Bird, four-page split screen and translation round out the update. Enable page context only when you are comfortable sharing that specific content with the AI, and remember that Opera’s 20% speed and language-count figures are company-reported claims.
