The VPN routes Opera browsing through a VPN server; Opera says it encrypts the connection between the browser and that server. Ad Blocker filters advertising content. Neither feature does the other’s job, and Opera’s free built-in VPN covers browsing in Opera—not every app on your device.
What Opera’s VPN and Ad Blocker do
| Feature | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Opera VPN | Routes traffic from Opera through a VPN server. Opera says websites then see the server’s apparent region rather than your usual IP-based location, and that the browser-to-server connection is encrypted. Opera Help | Opera’s free browser VPN does not route traffic from other apps on your device. It does not itself block ads. Opera’s VPN explainer |
| Ad Blocker | Filters ads in Opera and can reduce exposure to some advertising-related tracking. Opera Help describes configurable filter lists and exceptions for individual sites. Opera Help | It does not encrypt your connection or mask your IP address and location. It also does not prevent all tracking; cookies, for example, may still identify you. Opera’s VPN explainer |
| Tracker Blocker | A separate toggle on Opera’s feature page for blocking trackers. Opera Ad Blocker feature page | It is not the same control as VPN or Ad Blocker. |
A VPN changes the network path and the apparent IP address seen by sites; an ad blocker filters page content. You can enable one without the other. Opera describes its VPN as a privacy feature, but that is not a guarantee of anonymity or protection from every form of tracking.
How to turn on the VPN in Opera for desktop
- Open Opera’s Settings. You can also use Alt+P to open Settings on desktop.
- Go to Advanced > Features > VPN and enable VPN. Depending on the release, you may instead be able to click the VPN icon beside the address bar and switch it on there. Opera Help and Opera’s VPN feature page describe these controls.
- Click the VPN badge by the address bar to inspect the connection and choose an offered virtual location. If available, select an automatic or optimal location to let Opera choose. Labels and location options can vary by version.
Opera says its free VPN is unlimited, does not require an account, and does not log browsing data. These are Opera’s service claims, not a guarantee that every aspect of browsing is private. In a May 2026 article, Opera said Deloitte was given access to its VPN and server infrastructure to check its no-logging claim; that description is Opera’s account of the review. Opera Security
Public Wi-Fi auto-connect
Opera’s September 24, 2026 announcement says desktop Opera can automatically activate its VPN on public Wi-Fi, with the feature opt-in. Check the VPN settings in your installed version to see whether the option is available. Opera Newsroom

Know the limits before you enable either feature
- Free VPN coverage is browser-only. Other apps continue to use their normal network connection. Opera identifies VPN Pro as its paid whole-device option; check its current supported devices, locations, account or plan requirements, and price before choosing it. No current VPN Pro price is established here. Opera Security
- Ad blocking is not an anonymity tool. It filters ads and may reduce some tracking exposure, but it does not conceal your IP address or stop every tracking method.
- VPN privacy statements come from Opera. Opera says the free VPN is unlimited and does not log browsing data; the Deloitte review is described by Opera, rather than independently assessed here.
- Controls can change between releases. If a listed setting is absent, check the installed browser’s Settings and current Opera help pages.
Which Opera control should you use?
- Use the VPN when you want Opera browsing routed through a VPN server and want the browser-to-server connection encrypted, as Opera describes it.
- Use Ad Blocker when you want Opera to filter advertising content on pages.
- Use Tracker Blocker as a separate control if you want to filter trackers.
- If you need VPN routing for apps beyond Opera, compare a whole-device VPN rather than assuming the free browser control covers your device.
