Ubuntu is the better default for most people who want one Linux system for everyday desktop work and AI development. Its 26.04 LTS release has clearly documented support, a large framework ecosystem, published CUDA guidance and a broad certified-hardware program. Choose openKylin when Chinese ecosystem integration or hardware support for domestic ARM, LoongArch or selected RISC-V devices matters more than having the widest international software and GPU documentation.

What you are comparing

Ubuntu is a globally used Linux distribution with a mainstream desktop edition, long-term-support releases and extensive developer documentation. Ubuntu Desktop documentation describes the system as serving daily users, professional content creation, software development and AI/ML use cases. Its developer material specifically covers data science and machine learning tools.

openKylin is a community Linux distribution focused on Chinese users and a wider range of processor architectures. The openKylin download center lists version 3.0, released on September 5, 2026, in Desktop, Server, WSL and embedded forms. Images are listed for mainstream x86 hardware, domestic ARM platforms, LoongArch and selected RISC-V devices.

Hardware and architecture support

Standard Intel and AMD computers

For a conventional x86-64 laptop or desktop, Ubuntu is normally the lower-risk first installation. Ubuntu publishes a mainstream desktop path and identifies certified systems from Dell, Lenovo and HP. Certification does not guarantee that every peripheral will work perfectly, but it gives buyers and administrators a documented compatibility signal.

openKylin also provides x86 desktop images. The practical difference is not that openKylin cannot run on a normal PC; it is that Ubuntu has a larger internationally documented hardware and driver path. If your computer uses common Wi-Fi, graphics and audio components, Ubuntu usually offers more troubleshooting examples and vendor guidance.

Domestic ARM, LoongArch and RISC-V systems

openKylin has a decisive advantage when the computer is not an ordinary x86 machine. Its 3.0 download catalog includes domestic ARM, LoongArch and selected RISC-V images, in addition to x86. That matters because an installer built for x86 cannot simply be reused on a different instruction set.

Before downloading, identify the exact processor and board model, boot mode and image type. A desktop image for one ARM board may not boot on another board, even when both are described as ARM. Check whether the manufacturer supplies firmware, graphics drivers and a supported kernel for the particular openKylin image.

Ubuntu’s published desktop requirements

Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop lists a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB of memory and 25 GB of free storage. These are published baseline requirements, not a promise of fast AI training or comfortable multitasking. An AI workstation generally needs substantially more storage for datasets, model files and cached packages, plus a compatible accelerator.

Everyday desktop use

Installation and first-day tasks

Ubuntu’s desktop workflow is aimed at a broad audience: create installation media, boot the computer, choose language and keyboard settings, select storage options, create a user account and apply updates. Its documentation explicitly calls out a USB flash drive or DVD drive for installation media.

openKylin’s desktop image follows the same broad Linux pattern, but the exact installer screens, default repositories and hardware enablement can vary by architecture. On a domestic device, use the image matching the vendor’s instructions rather than assuming the generic x86 installer is appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Language, localization and applications

Both systems can provide a graphical desktop, multilingual input and common Linux applications. openKylin is the more natural choice when Chinese-language defaults, local documentation or integration with a Chinese hardware and software ecosystem are central requirements. Ubuntu is generally easier to use when your work depends on globally documented applications, tutorials and vendor support.

Application availability depends on the package architecture and repository, not only on the distribution name. A program distributed as an x86 binary may be unavailable on LoongArch or RISC-V until a compatible package is built. Confirm that your essential browser, office suite, communications tools and development IDE have packages for the exact openKylin architecture before replacing an existing system.

Peripheral and graphics risk

On a standard PC, Ubuntu’s certified-hardware information and larger user base reduce the time spent diagnosing suspend, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and graphics problems. openKylin can be the better-supported option on a domestic platform because its kernel and image may be adapted to that hardware. The correct choice is therefore tied to the machine, not just to a general reputation for either distribution.

AI and machine-learning support

Ubuntu’s documented framework ecosystem

Ubuntu’s developer documentation names OpenCV, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch and Kubeflow, and presents Ubuntu as a workstation platform for data scientists and AI/ML researchers. It also documents Python virtual environments, CUDA installation for Ubuntu 26.04 and workflows for local models or cloud-assisted model tools such as Ollama.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This documentation does not mean that those frameworks are preinstalled. A new desktop installation gives you the operating-system base; you still create an isolated Python environment, install the framework version your project requires, add a GPU driver and CUDA components when needed, and obtain model files separately.

CUDA and NVIDIA hardware

NVIDIA’s CUDA compatibility material lists Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04 among supported releases. It separately mentions support for a single KylinOS release. KylinOS is not automatically the same distribution as openKylin, so that entry should not be interpreted as a blanket CUDA certification for every openKylin 3.0 image or device.

For an NVIDIA-based workstation, Ubuntu therefore has the clearer documented path: choose a supported Ubuntu release, install the matching proprietary driver and CUDA components, then validate the driver before installing PyTorch or another framework. On openKylin, verify the exact GPU model, kernel, driver package and architecture in the distribution and hardware documentation before committing to the setup.

CPU-only and integrated-graphics AI

Many experiments run without a discrete GPU, although training and inference can be slower. In that situation, the key questions are Python-package availability, processor architecture, memory and storage. Ubuntu’s broad package and tutorial coverage is helpful on x86. openKylin may be the only practical choice when the computer is a supported domestic ARM, LoongArch or RISC-V system, but you must confirm that the required framework publishes wheels or source-build instructions for that architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What neither distribution provides out of the box

Ubuntu’s AI documentation states that a fresh Ubuntu 26.04 desktop installation contains no built-in AI tooling. Expect the same operational model from openKylin: install the system first, then assemble your development stack. Plan for driver maintenance, Python-environment management, model storage, updates and reproducibility rather than expecting a single installer to deliver a complete laboratory.

Support lifetime and maintenance

Item Ubuntu 26.04 LTS openKylin 3.0
Release date stated in the available documentation 2026 LTS release September 5, 2026
Free security and maintenance period Five years Not stated in the available project information
Optional extended maintenance Up to 15 years with Ubuntu Pro Not stated
Published image types Desktop and other Ubuntu editions Desktop, Server, WSL and embedded

The five-year figure for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is a stated free-maintenance period. The 15-year figure requires Ubuntu Pro and should not be presented as the default free lifecycle. For a workstation that must remain on a documented security schedule, Ubuntu’s published policy is easier to plan around. For openKylin, check the project’s current release and update announcements for the architecture you intend to use.

Package availability and software maintenance

Why package architecture matters

On x86, Ubuntu’s repositories and third-party instructions cover a large range of development tools. openKylin’s architecture breadth is valuable, but it also means package coverage can differ substantially between x86, ARM, LoongArch and RISC-V. A package available for openKylin x86 may not exist for openKylin LoongArch.

Repository and update decisions

Use the distribution’s official repositories for the base system and security updates. Add third-party repositories only when the vendor supports your exact release and architecture. For AI projects, record the operating-system version, driver version, CUDA version and Python package versions so that an update does not silently change the environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Containers and virtual machines

Containers can reduce dependency conflicts, but they do not eliminate kernel and GPU-driver requirements. A containerized CUDA workload still needs a compatible host driver. On openKylin’s non-x86 architectures, confirm that the container image exists for the architecture; an x86-only image will not run natively on ARM, LoongArch or RISC-V.

Which distribution fits your situation?

  • Choose Ubuntu for a standard Intel or AMD laptop, broad international software support, a documented NVIDIA/CUDA route, or a workstation that needs a predictable long-term maintenance policy.
  • Choose openKylin for a supported Chinese processor platform, a domestic ARM, LoongArch or selected RISC-V device, or a workflow where Chinese localization and regional ecosystem alignment outweigh the larger Ubuntu ecosystem.
  • Test before replacing your current system when you depend on specialized Wi-Fi, fingerprint readers, docking stations, professional graphics hardware or a proprietary enterprise application.
  • Use a separate environment when you need both: keep the vendor-supported openKylin installation for hardware-specific work and run Ubuntu on a separate disk, virtual machine or supported server for software that requires Ubuntu-specific instructions.

Installation and evaluation checklist

Before downloading

  1. Record the processor architecture: x86-64, ARM variant, LoongArch or RISC-V.
  2. Check firmware mode, secure-boot requirements, storage capacity and whether the vendor supplies a compatible graphics and network driver.
  3. Back up personal files and create a recovery drive for the existing operating system.
  4. List applications you cannot replace, then verify packages for the exact distribution and architecture.
  5. For AI work, identify the GPU model and confirm an available driver and framework build before choosing the operating system.

Creating installation media

  1. Download the image matching your hardware and edition. For openKylin, select the appropriate Desktop, Server, WSL or embedded image; do not use an x86 image on a non-x86 device.
  2. Write the image to a USB flash drive using a trusted image-writing utility.
  3. Boot from USB, test keyboard, display, network and storage detection, and only then begin an installation.
  4. When dual-booting, leave unallocated disk space and disable fast-startup features in the existing operating system if the installer documentation requires it.

After the first boot

  1. Apply operating-system updates before adding development tools.
  2. Confirm suspend, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, external displays and printers.
  3. Install the graphics driver recommended for the exact release and GPU.
  4. Create a project-specific Python virtual environment rather than installing every package into the system Python.
  5. Install one framework, run a small CPU test, then enable GPU acceleration and validate it separately.
  6. Document versions and keep a recovery copy of configuration files before major driver or kernel updates.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Practical response
The installer does not boot Wrong architecture image, firmware mode or incomplete USB write Recheck the processor, choose the matching image and recreate the USB in the firmware mode supported by the device.
No graphics acceleration Missing, incompatible or incorrectly matched GPU driver Identify the exact GPU and operating-system release, install the documented driver, reboot and validate before adding a framework.
PyTorch or another framework will not install No wheel for the processor architecture or incompatible Python/CUDA combination Check architecture-specific packages, use a clean virtual environment and match framework, Python, driver and CUDA versions.
Wi-Fi or suspend fails on a laptop Hardware-specific kernel or firmware support Test a newer supported kernel or vendor image, and consult the hardware compatibility notes before changing distributions.
A container image will not run The image targets a different CPU architecture Use a multi-architecture image or build one for the target architecture; verify host GPU-driver compatibility separately.
Updates break an AI environment Driver, CUDA or Python dependency changed Pin project dependencies, record working versions and keep a restorable environment or container image.

Can you run CUDA and PyTorch on openKylin?

Possibly, but the answer depends on the exact openKylin release, architecture, GPU and driver package. The available CUDA documentation provides a clear list for several Ubuntu releases and only a separate KylinOS entry; it does not establish universal openKylin support. Treat openKylin CUDA/PyTorch deployment as a hardware-specific compatibility project. Verify the driver, CUDA toolkit, Python version and framework build together, preferably on a test installation before purchasing or reconfiguring a workstation.

Final recommendation

For most readers asking “openKylin vs Ubuntu which is better?”, install Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on a conventional x86 laptop or desktop, especially when AI, NVIDIA hardware or long-term maintenance is involved. Its documented frameworks, CUDA guidance and certified-hardware information reduce setup uncertainty.

Select openKylin 3.0 when the computer is based on domestic ARM, LoongArch or supported RISC-V hardware, or when Chinese ecosystem alignment is the primary requirement. In that case, match the image to the exact device and verify application, driver and AI-framework availability before committing. Neither distribution arrives as a complete AI lab; the quality of the result depends on the compatibility of the hardware, drivers and software versions you assemble.
