Orion was an internal codename associated with OpenAI’s GPT-4.5, not the name of a separately launched public model. OpenAI released GPT-4.5 as a research preview on February 27, 2025. The available public evidence does not establish that Orion was a distinct breakthrough model or support a separate Orion performance score.

Did OpenAI release Orion?

Not under the public name Orion. In a February 12, 2025 post on the OpenAI Developer Community reproducing roadmap wording attributed to CEO Sam Altman, the statement read: “We will next ship GPT-4.5, the model we called Orion internally.” That reproduction links the codename to GPT-4.5, but it is community-hosted wording rather than an original OpenAI announcement: OpenAI Developer Community roadmap post.

OpenAI’s public release was GPT-4.5, announced as a research preview on February 27, 2025. The launch page described it as the company’s largest and best model for chat at that time, while also saying it was compute-intensive and not a replacement for GPT-4o.

Was Orion really GPT-5?

The naming confusion came from reporting that connected Orion with a possible GPT-5 project. In December 2024, TechCrunch summarized reports describing the project as GPT-5/Orion and saying its results had fallen short of expectations. Those were reported accounts, not a published OpenAI evaluation of a model called Orion: TechCrunch’s December 2024 report.

By February 2025, the roadmap wording reproduced in the OpenAI Developer Community associated Orion with GPT-4.5 and described GPT-5 as integrating OpenAI technologies, including o3. OpenAI later formally introduced GPT-5 on August 7, 2025, as a unified system combining a fast model, a deeper reasoning model, and a router. Its launch announcement said GPT-5 replaced GPT-4o, o3, o4-mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.5 for signed-in ChatGPT users at launch: OpenAI’s GPT-5 announcement.

So the clearest distinction is: Orion was reported as an internal codename associated with GPT-4.5; GPT-5 was a later public model release. The association does not make Orion a separate public version of GPT-5.

What happened to Orion?

OpenAI pushed back on the timing implied by late-2024 reports. On October 25, 2024, it said it did not plan to release a model called Orion that year. That statement addressed the expected timing and public name; it did not establish that development had stopped. The initial report also repeated claims about Orion’s training and potential capabilities, but those were not official specifications: The Verge’s October 2024 report.

The next public milestone was GPT-4.5’s research-preview launch in February 2025. OpenAI’s current GPT-4.5 launch page marks itself as outdated, and its historical description should not be mistaken for a statement about the present model lineup. OpenAI’s GPT-5 page likewise points readers to newer models: GPT-4.5 launch page and GPT-5 launch page.

What GPT-4.5 was designed to do

OpenAI presented GPT-4.5 as a scaled general-purpose model. Its launch post emphasized scaling pre-training and post-training to improve knowledge and interaction, including pattern recognition, writing, and programming. OpenAI contrasted this approach with o-series models such as o1 and o3-mini, which are designed to reason before answering.

That is a distinction in capability style, not proof that one approach is universally better. GPT-4.5’s launch page reports results on selected benchmarks for GPT-4.5 and comparison models. Those evaluations concern GPT-4.5; they do not establish an independent Orion benchmark or reveal a separate Orion score.

Was Orion a game-changing AI model?

“Game-changing” is not demonstrated by the public Orion evidence. Reports at the time described expectations of a major step forward and claims about training methods or internal results, but those claims are not equivalent to a public technical evaluation. The public record supports the codename association and the GPT-4.5 release—not a finding that Orion independently transformed model performance.

OpenAI later reported that GPT-5 responses with web search enabled were about 45% less likely to contain a factual error than GPT-4o on anonymized prompts representative of ChatGPT production traffic. That is an OpenAI-reported comparison of GPT-5 and GPT-4o under the stated prompt setting, not an Orion result: OpenAI’s GPT-5 announcement.

Orion, GPT-4.5, and GPT-5 at a glance

Term What the public record establishes Important qualification
Orion Reported internal codename associated with GPT-4.5 in February 2025 roadmap wording. The wording is reproduced in an OpenAI Developer Community post, not an original announcement.
GPT-4.5 Publicly launched as a research preview on February 27, 2025. OpenAI described a general-purpose, non-reasoning approach and said it was compute-intensive.
GPT-5 Publicly introduced on August 7, 2025 as a unified system. A later release; its performance claims do not retroactively establish Orion-specific results.
