It reduces some prompt-injection data-exfiltration paths by restricting ChatGPT’s connections to the web and external services, but it also disables or limits several tools and does not make ChatGPT immune to prompt injection.
What OpenAI announced
OpenAI announced Lockdown Mode and standardized Elevated Risk labels on February 13, 2026. The announcement presented Lockdown Mode as an advanced, optional control and the labels as a consistent way to warn users when a capability carries additional security risk.
On June 4, 2026, OpenAI updated the announcement to say that Lockdown Mode was rolling out to personal ChatGPT accounts and self-serve ChatGPT Business accounts, after its introduction for enterprise plans. Eligibility and rollout can differ by account and workspace.
What Lockdown Mode changes
The mode primarily constrains outbound network requests and connections that could provide a route for information to leave ChatGPT. OpenAI’s current guidance describes these practical changes:

- Live web browsing is limited to cached content, which may be unavailable, stale or less complete than live results.
- Deep Research is disabled.
- Agent Mode is disabled.
- Canvas networking is disabled.
- File downloads are disabled.
- Some image display or web-image retrieval is restricted.
- Image generation remains available where the account otherwise supports it, and users can still upload image files.
In managed workspaces, administrators can retain selected app and action access through roles and workspace configuration. Therefore, the exact set of available connectors depends on the organization’s policy rather than on the name “Lockdown Mode” alone.
How to turn on Lockdown Mode
Personal and self-serve Business accounts
- Open Settings in ChatGPT.
- Select Security.
- Under Advanced security, enable Lockdown Mode.
If the setting is missing, the account may not yet be eligible, the rollout may not have reached it, or an administrator may control the option.

Managed workspaces
A workspace administrator configures a Lockdown Mode role and assigns it to individual members or groups. Ask the administrator which apps and actions remain permitted, because workspace configuration can preserve selected access.
Lockdown Mode versus ordinary use

Does Lockdown Mode stop prompt injection?
No. It reduces the avenues by which a malicious instruction might cause data to be sent to an external destination, but it does not prevent hostile instructions from appearing in documents, web content or other material ChatGPT processes. Such instructions can still affect behavior or answer accuracy.

OpenAI’s Help Center describes the feature as designed to “substantially reduce the risk of prompt injection-based data exfiltration,” while explicitly stating that it does not guarantee data exfiltration cannot happen. Remaining risk can come from enabled apps, unexpected combinations of capabilities or techniques discovered after the feature was designed.
What Lockdown Mode does not change
- It does not determine whether conversations may be used to improve models. Data controls and workspace settings manage that separately.
- It does not change network access in Codex.
- It does not guarantee that every connector, app or action is disabled in a managed workspace.
What “Elevated Risk” means in ChatGPT
Elevated Risk is a standardized label and icon for a capability whose additional risks are not yet fully addressed by industry safety and security mitigations. The label should appear with guidance specific to that feature.

OpenAI uses Codex network access as an example: network access can let Codex look up documentation and perform web tasks, while also increasing exposure to prompt injection. The label is not a permanent classification. OpenAI may remove it as safeguards improve, and the set of labeled capabilities can change.

- Use it when reducing external connections is more important than live research, agents, downloads or networked Canvas features.
- Review the restrictions first if your work depends on current web pages, Deep Research, Agent Mode or external actions.
- In a company, confirm the administrator’s role and app policy before assuming the mode provides identical protection for every user.
- Treat it as one layer in a security strategy, not as permission to submit highly sensitive material without considering the remaining risks.
Availability and rollout caveats
OpenAI’s public documentation does not establish one universal availability rule for every plan, country or workspace. The control may depend on account eligibility, rollout status, workspace setup and administrator settings. Check Settings > Security or contact the workspace administrator for the account-specific answer.
