OpenXR, WebXR, Godot, and Monado are open-source or open XR technologies, but they do different jobs: OpenXR is an application API standard, WebXR is a browser API, Godot is a game engine, and Monado is an OpenXR runtime and framework. Choose by the layer you need, then check the exact headset, browser, operating system, and XR features your project must support.

First, separate the layers

“XR” covers both virtual reality and augmented reality. VR presents a fully virtual environment; AR adds virtual content to a view of the real world. AR may use a phone or tablet, optical see-through glasses, or a headset’s video passthrough, and the implementation differs across devices. Godot’s XR terminology documentation describes these distinctions.

The four options below are not direct substitutes. An engine can use an API, and a runtime can implement that API. Treating them as a single list of competing products can lead to choosing the wrong kind of tool.

Technology What it is Best fit Important boundary
Godot Open-source game engine with documented XR support Building an XR application with an engine, using its OpenXR or WebXR route Device features and portability depend on the route, browser, runtime, and platform
OpenXR Cross-platform API standard maintained by the Khronos Group Providing a common application interface to supported XR platforms It is not an engine or a complete runtime; optional features depend on runtime support
WebXR Browser API for XR experiences Delivering an XR experience through a browser rather than requiring a native app installation Availability and capability depend on the browser, device, and API support
Monado Open-source OpenXR runtime and framework identified by Khronos Working with an open-source implementation of the runtime layer It is not an engine or an application API alternative to Godot

What each option offers

Godot: an engine for building the experience

Godot’s XR system is modular: its XRServer coordinates platform interfaces. Godot 4.7’s XR setup documentation uses OpenXR as its example interface. For desktop VR and standalone headsets, that documentation recommends the Mobile renderer and cautions that Forward+ is less optimized for XR. These are version-sensitive recommendations, so verify the current Godot documentation for the version and device you plan to target.

Godot also documents built-in WebXR support. Its WebXR controller input mapping overlaps with the default OpenXR action map, which can help when adapting an experience between those routes. The input representations still differ, so shared actions are a starting point—not a guarantee that every control or feature will behave identically.

OpenXR: a shared application interface

OpenXR is a Khronos Group standard API intended to let XR applications interact with different platforms. It can reduce application-level dependence on a particular vendor interface, but does not make every device feature universal. In Godot’s OpenXR settings documentation, optional extensions work only when the active runtime supports them.

Khronos’s 2025 spatial-computing material identifies features promoted to the OpenXR 1.1 core, including Local Floor reference space, Grip Surface, and stereo with foveated rendering. A feature’s presence in the core standard does not by itself establish that a particular target runtime exposes it in the way a project needs. Check the actual runtime and device before making a feature a requirement.

WebXR: browser delivery

Godot’s WebXR guide describes browser-delivered XR as a way to let users access an experience without installing a native application. That can simplify access and distribution when the intended browser and device support the required APIs. It does not guarantee that an experience will be available in every browser, or that browser capabilities will match a native OpenXR build.

Monado: a runtime implementation

Khronos identifies Monado as an open-source OpenXR runtime and framework. This makes it a different layer from Godot: Godot can be used to build an application, while Monado belongs to the runtime layer that implements OpenXR. The supplied information does not establish a broader device-compatibility list or feature matrix for Monado, so evaluate it against the exact hardware and runtime requirements of your project.

Handheld AR is a separate portability decision

Do not assume that an OpenXR project for a headset will carry over unchanged to phone or tablet AR. Godot’s stable XR terminology documentation says phones and tablets do not currently provide OpenXR support in its documented workflow. For Android handheld AR, Godot exposes ARCore through a platform-specific plugin, and the result is not fully portable.

A May 2026 Godot update describes the OpenXR Vendors plugin as an official GDExtension for additional, primarily vendor-specific OpenXR functionality. The announcement reports Android XR additions including trackables, dynamic resolution, and unbounded reference space. These capabilities are sensitive to plugin release, vendor, platform, and runtime; confirm each dependency before designing around it.

Choose by hardware, delivery, and required features

Start with the target experience rather than the word “open-source.” For each target, identify the device, operating system, active runtime or browser, and required interaction. Godot’s OpenXR settings also describe blend modes as dependent on the runtime and device, which matters when deciding between opaque VR, optical see-through AR, and video passthrough.

Meta Quest 3 512GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset — Renewed Premium
  • NEARLY 30% LEAP IN RESOLUTION — Experience every thrill in breathtaking detail with sharp graphics and stunning 4K Infinite Display.
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Play, explore and exercise in immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once.
  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up.
  • Need an engine? Consider Godot if its engine workflow fits the project and its documented OpenXR or WebXR route covers the target.
  • Need a common XR application interface? Evaluate OpenXR, then verify extension and feature support in the runtime you will actually use.
  • Need browser access? Evaluate WebXR against the intended browser and device, including the input model and required capabilities.
  • Need a runtime implementation? Monado is the option here identified as an open-source OpenXR runtime and framework; assess its fit for your specific hardware rather than treating it as an engine.
  • Need phone or tablet AR as well as headset XR? Account for platform-specific paths such as Godot’s Android ARCore plugin and the resulting limits on portability.
  • Need dependable performance or specialized rendering? Check renderer guidance, required refresh and performance targets, and support for the relevant extensions on the target device.

OpenXR can provide a shared interface, and Godot can provide an engine that uses it, but neither makes hardware support or behavior identical across runtimes. Browser deployment adds a separate compatibility boundary; handheld AR may require another platform-specific implementation. Make a short target-device matrix before committing: record each device, delivery route, runtime or browser, AR mode, input method, and must-have feature, then verify each item against the relevant current documentation.

Sources and version context

The distinctions and capabilities described here are documented in the Godot Engine XR terminology, 4.7 XR setup, OpenXR settings, and WebXR guides; the Godot May 2026 OpenXR Vendors update; and Khronos Group OpenXR and 2025 spatial-computing material. The renderer guidance is specifically from Godot 4.7 documentation, and the vendor-plugin examples are from the May 2026 update. Confirm current documentation for the version, runtime, browser, and hardware you intend to use.
