The reliable baseline: create a page-specific image at about 1200×630 pixels (roughly 1.91:1), host it at a public HTTPS URL, and place that URL in an og:image tag in the page’s <head>. Add the other three Open Graph basics—og:title, og:type, and og:url—then inspect the rendered preview on each network you care about. A platform can still crop, cache, scrape, or substitute a different image, so treat the canvas as a strong starting point rather than a universal guarantee.
What an Open Graph image does
Open Graph metadata turns a URL into a richer object when someone shares it. The protocol identifies four basic properties: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. The image is the visual representation of that page; it is not a replacement for the title or canonical URL.
For a portfolio, the shared object might be your home page, an individual case study, a résumé page, or a project detail page. Give each important page an image that reflects that page. A generic logo used everywhere is less informative, and Google says image selection is automated: og:image and suitable schema.org image properties can influence its preference, but do not guarantee that every Google surface will use that exact asset.
Choosing the Open Graph type
Use website for most portfolio pages when no more specific type applies. The protocol treats an otherwise unmarked page as a website, making it a sensible default for home, about, contact, and project pages.

What size should an Open Graph image be?
Start with a 1200×630-pixel canvas, approximately 1.91:1. This is a practical recommendation from Wix guidance and the og-image.org guide, not a dimension mandated by the Open Graph Protocol. Check the current requirements of a critical destination because services can resize or crop independently.
Keep the important area safe
For a 1200×630 design, the og-image.org guide suggests roughly 60–80 pixels of padding around key text and logos. Keep names, project titles, and marks away from every edge. A service may crop a little from the sides or top, and a small preview can make fine type unreadable.
Use a deliberate composition
- Choose a screenshot, product image, or visual motif that actually represents the page or project.
- Use a short title that remains legible when the card is small; do not pack the canvas with a résumé or paragraph.
- Maintain strong contrast and test the smallest preview you expect a reader to see.
- Keep branding consistent across pages while changing the project-specific visual or title.
PNG, JPG, or WebP?

The og-image.org guide recommends PNG for crisp text and flat graphics and JPG when photos make up most of the image. Its caution about WebP support is especially relevant when several social crawlers are involved. Wix guidance recommends keeping an image at or below 8 MB; that is Wix guidance, not a protocol-wide limit. The same guidance says images under 600×315 may appear as small previews and that WhatsApp previews display only when the image is under 300 KB. Those thresholds are service-specific and can change.

How to add an OG image to your portfolio
1. Create and publish the asset
Export the image at 1200×630, inspect it at a reduced size, and upload it somewhere a crawler can fetch without logging in. Use an absolute HTTPS URL such as https://portfolio.example/images/projects/atlas-og.jpg; a relative path or a URL valid only inside your development environment will fail for external scrapers.
2. Add the required head tags
Place the tags in the served HTML document’s <head>. Replace the example values for every page:

3. Set a useful page title as well
Open Graph tags do not replace the normal document title, description, or accessible image handling. Keep your regular <title>, meta description, and visible page heading aligned with the same project name so a fallback preview still makes sense.
4. Verify the delivered HTML
View the production page source or fetch it as an anonymous request. Confirm that the tags are present in the initial response if the site relies on client-side rendering; a crawler that does not execute your JavaScript may never see tags inserted later. Confirm the image URL returns the intended file, the response has an image MIME type, and no authentication, hotlink protection, robots rule, or firewall blocks ordinary crawlers.

A browser-based template workflow is straightforward: select a layout, change the title, description, colors, and background, export a PNG or JPG, then add its absolute URL to the head. The cited og-image.org documentation describes a client-side generator; that description applies to that service, not to every design tool.

For many unique project pages, generate an image from page data during your build. The og-image.org documentation points to Satori/Vercel OG and guides for Next.js, React, Vue, and other frameworks. A generator can prevent stale titles and make a redesign one code change, but it adds font-loading, layout, and deployment considerations. A manually designed image can be simpler and more art-directed for a small portfolio.

The preview is blank
- Confirm
og:imageis an absolute HTTPS URL, not a relative path. - Open the image URL in a private browser window and check that it works without cookies or authentication.
- Remove hotlink restrictions, bot challenges, or firewall rules that deny crawler requests.
- Check that the served HTML—not only a client-side DOM inspection—contains the current tag.
The old image remains
Social services commonly cache scraped metadata. Change the asset URL, for example from atlas-og.jpg to atlas-og-v2.jpg, and update the tag. Then use the destination’s current inspection tool to request a fresh scrape. The cited guidance names Facebook Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn Post Inspector, and Wix references X and Pinterest validators; availability and behavior of these tools can change.
The image is cropped or text is unreadable
Inspect the actual rendered card, not only the source file. Move key content inward, shorten the headline, increase contrast, and test at a small size. Cropping differs by service, and a single 1200×630 image cannot guarantee an identical card everywhere.

A crawler receives the wrong file
Check redirects, the response Content-Type, certificate validity, and whether a CDN serves an older object. Ensure the URL in the HTML and the URL you tested are byte-for-byte identical, including capitalization and file extension.
Reliability and maintenance checklist
- Give every shareable portfolio page its own relevant image URL.
- Use HTTPS, absolute URLs, and public access without a session.
- Keep the four basic properties present and consistent with the canonical page.
- Add width, height, MIME type, and descriptive alt text where practical.
- Keep key content 60–80 pixels from the edge on a 1200×630 canvas.
- Choose PNG for crisp graphic designs, JPG for photo-heavy designs, and verify WebP support before relying on it.
- After replacing an image, version the URL and re-scrape it with the destination’s inspector.
- Recheck previews after major template, CDN, or access-control changes.
