Ookla’s global 5G Map began in May 2019 as a record of 5G deployments around the world. Ookla says the map grew to cover more than 145,000 deployments from 233 providers across 142 countries, but it is now offering the map’s final data rather than presenting it as an ongoing global tracker. For a local coverage view, use Coverage Maps in the Speedtest Android or iOS app.
What Ookla’s global 5G Map shows
Ookla launched its map in May 2019 to track the worldwide expansion of 5G. At launch, it showed 300 deployments in 17 countries. Its later tally reached more than 145,000 deployments from 233 providers in 142 countries, according to Ookla’s map page.
A deployment inventory describes where providers have reported rolling out 5G; it does not guarantee that service is available at every address within a mapped area. A map entry is useful for understanding industry expansion, not for confirming reception at a particular home, workplace, or route.
Is the global map still being updated?
Ookla says it is shifting focus from the global map and provides the final 5G data for download on its official map page. Treat it as a historical dataset, not a live worldwide coverage service. The page’s figures reflect the map’s accumulated scope, not a promise that every listed deployment remains active or that the inventory changes as networks evolve.

How to check 5G coverage near you
For a consumer-oriented local view, Ookla points users to Speedtest Coverage Maps in the Speedtest app for Android and iOS. This is a different tool and purpose from the global deployment inventory: the app feature is intended to help people explore local coverage, while the global map documented the expansion of deployments across countries.
Coverage information can vary by region. Ookla’s open-data repository notes that regional data availability is subject to applicable laws and internal policies; therefore, availability and detail may not be the same everywhere.

What network planners can use instead
For professional analysis, Speedtest Insights offers 5G architecture filters, including NR Standalone (SA) and NR Non-Standalone (NSA). Ookla’s release notes dated May 21, 2026 describe this classification. These filters support analysis of network architecture; they are not a substitute for checking consumer coverage at a specific address.
