Onsemi’s East Fishkill fab expands its U.S. manufacturing capabilities, but the acquisition is not evidence that the company immediately reduced its environmental impact. The facility enlarged the boundary of onsemi’s emissions and energy reporting; the company’s published efficiency opportunities are enterprise-wide, not measured savings attributed specifically to the fab.

What did onsemi buy at East Fishkill?

Onsemi completed its purchase of GlobalFoundries’ 300 mm East Fishkill (EFK) site and fabrication facility in New York effective December 31, 2022. Onsemi’s 2023 reporting describes EFK as its largest U.S. manufacturing site and says more than 1,000 jobs were retained.

The facility adds 300 mm manufacturing for power-discrete devices and image sensors, as well as advanced CMOS capabilities at 40 nm and 65 nm nodes. This combination gives onsemi a broader domestic manufacturing footprint across power and sensing products and CMOS processes.

How did EFK change onsemi’s reported emissions and energy use?

Onsemi’s 2023 sustainability report recalculated its 2022 emissions baseline to include EFK. That boundary change matters: a company-wide total after an acquisition covers a larger manufacturing operation, so it cannot be read as a like-for-like measure of the pre-acquisition business.

Onsemi company-wide measure 2023 reported amount How to interpret it
Scope 1 emissions 828,620 MTCO₂e Direct emissions reported by onsemi for 2023; not an EFK-only figure.
Scope 2 emissions 713,968 MTCO₂e Scope 2 emissions reported by onsemi for 2023; not an EFK-only figure.
Scope 3 emissions 1,569,430 MTCO₂e Scope 3 emissions reported by onsemi for 2023; not an EFK-only figure.

Onsemi reported total energy consumption of 2,208,573 MWh in 2023, including 1,766,748 MWh of purchased electricity. The company said the increase in energy use from 2022 generally resulted from finalizing the EFK acquisition on December 31, 2022. That explanation points to the expanded reporting and operating footprint, not to an efficiency improvement.

The figures establish the scale of onsemi’s reported resource use after EFK entered the company’s footprint. They do not show EFK’s individual emissions, energy per wafer, or energy per unit of output, and the published figures here do not establish whether EFK is more or less resource-intensive than another fab.

Does the acquisition make onsemi’s manufacturing more sustainable?

There is a credible structural case for potential efficiency: 300 mm production and a broader manufacturing footprint can support scale and production consolidation. But scale is not the same as a demonstrated reduction in absolute resource use. The available company-wide totals do not establish an EFK-specific carbon-intensity improvement, a site-level water result, or a before-and-after environmental benefit from the purchase.

Onsemi’s 2024 sustainability report describes company-wide opportunities estimated at 8,000 MWh of electricity savings and 2.5 million gallons of water savings, with approximately $880,000 in annual cost savings. These are identified opportunities across the company, not results attributed solely to EFK; they should not be read as verified savings already achieved at the East Fishkill facility.

In its 2025 reporting, onsemi classified 78% of revenue, approximately $4.684 billion, as “triple-bottom-line” revenue. That is the company’s own classification of revenue, rather than a site-level environmental measurement or proof that EFK itself has reduced emissions.

Why does East Fishkill matter to U.S. semiconductor supply and defense?

EFK adds U.S.-based capacity for power-discrete devices, image sensors, and CMOS products, while retaining more than 1,000 jobs. Domestic production can be strategically important for customers seeking supply within the United States, but the acquisition announcement alone does not quantify how much it changes national supply resilience or reduces dependence on overseas production.

In October 2024, EFK was accredited as a U.S. Department of Defense Defense Microelectronics Activity (DMEA) Category 1A Trusted Supplier. This designation supports the facility’s role in secure aerospace and defense semiconductor production. It is a defense supply-chain trust designation, not an environmental certification and not a measure of the fab’s energy or emissions performance.

What the sustainability claim can—and cannot—mean

  • Supported: EFK expands onsemi’s U.S. manufacturing capabilities and increases the scale of the company’s reported operations.
  • Supported: Onsemi’s 2023 energy increase generally reflected adding EFK to its footprint, according to the company.
  • Not established by these figures: That EFK reduced onsemi’s absolute emissions or resource use, or that the site has a lower emissions or energy intensity than other fabs.
  • Not an EFK-specific result: The electricity and water savings opportunities reported in 2024 apply company-wide.

The most accurate reading of “ups its sustainability game” is therefore that the acquisition changes the scale and structure of onsemi’s manufacturing and reporting, creating room for efficiency efforts while also adding significant resource use to the company’s footprint. The published figures support that distinction, not a claim of an immediate environmental win at the site.
