Friendship-based scams work by making a child feel known, helped, or accepted before asking for something valuable. The request might be a gift-card number, a login or verification code, money, a rare game item, or a move to a private chat. The safest response is a practiced pause: the child does not send anything, leaves the conversation, and checks with a trusted adult.
An online friendship can feel real to a child even when the other person is manipulating them. Treating the disclosure as a safety problem—not a punishment issue—makes it more likely the child will show messages and accept help. The FBI, FTC, Internet Matters and Roblox parent guidance all emphasize slowing down, protecting credentials and reporting abusive behavior.
Why do scammers act like a friend first?
Trust lowers a child’s suspicion. A player may spend days or weeks chatting, helping with a level, sharing game tips or acting reliable before making a request. Internet Matters calls one pattern a “trust trade”: someone presents as dependable, then asks to hold or trade a valuable virtual item. The friendship is part of the setup, not proof that the request is safe. Internet Matters’ online-game safety guidance describes this tactic and related account scams.
Recommended Free Tools
Another version promises help in return for access. A contact might claim they can obtain an item, beat a level or add free currency if the child supplies a username, password or one-time code. A fake giveaway link can collect the same information without an explicit request for a password. Supposed free-Robux offers and invitations to follow links away from the game are red flags identified in the Internet Matters and Roblox safety material.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Outside games, the pattern can sound like an ordinary friendship crisis: “I’m stuck,” “my parent is hurt,” or “I need a gift card right now.” The Federal Trade Commission warns that a new online friend who asks for money is often a scammer; its examples apply generally to online friendships, not as a measured profile of every child’s gaming experience. The FTC’s consumer alert explains the pattern.
What can a child be asked to give away?
Judge the request by what leaves the child’s control. A friendly tone, a familiar username or a promise of a reward does not change the risk of the item being requested.
| Request | What leaves the child’s control | Typical setup | Immediate response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Money or a gift-card number | Cash or purchased value that can be spent by the recipient | An urgent personal problem, a promised trade or a request to “send the code so I can verify it” | Do not buy or send it; show the message to an adult |
| Password, login or authentication code | Access to an account, and potentially linked payment or personal data | Help with a level, free currency, account recovery or a giveaway link | Stop, secure the account and change credentials if anything was shared |
| Rare virtual item or inventory access | Something that may be difficult or impossible to recover | A “trust trade,” a promise to return the item or a claim that an intermediary is needed | Keep the item in the account’s official trade system, or decline |
| Personal or intimate material | Images or information that can be copied, threatened with or redistributed | A person posing as a peer builds rapport, then uses pressure or blackmail | Do not pay; preserve evidence and get urgent adult and official help |
These categories overlap. For example, a fake reward page may first capture a login and then use the account to steal virtual items. The response should match the most serious thing at risk, not the apparent friendliness of the requester.

Is a gift-card code different from a login or verification code?
Yes. A gift-card number transfers the card’s purchased value. A login, authentication or verification code can let someone enter or take over an account. They are different kinds of secrets, and neither should be sent to an online contact.
The FBI gives children a direct rule: “Don’t give your phone PIN, passwords, authentication codes, or verification numbers to anyone online.” Read the FBI’s Staying Safe Online guidance. A one-time code may look harmless because it expires quickly, but it can be exactly what an attacker needs at that moment.

Gift-card requests often rely on urgency. The person may ask a child to scratch off a card and send a photo or number, or to read a code while staying in a chat. Once transferred, the value may be spent before a family can dispute the purchase. A child should never “prove” friendship by sending a code, even when the requester knows details about the game or appears to have helped before.
Which warning signs deserve a pause?
No single sign proves that an online friend is dangerous. Several together should end the conversation until an adult has reviewed it.
- Urgency: “Now,” “don’t tell anyone,” or a countdown designed to prevent checking.
- Secrets: a demand to hide the request from parents, moderators or other friends.
- Off-platform moves: pressure to continue on another chat app or through a link outside the game. The FTC recommends rehearsing a simple refusal to such moves. See the FTC’s guidance for kids and video games.
- Free rewards: offers of free currency, rare items or special status in exchange for credentials, a code or a click.
- Unusual payment: gift cards, cryptocurrency, payment apps or a request to use someone else’s account.
- Broken promises or changing stories: the reason for the request shifts when the child asks questions.
- Threats: claims that an account, image, secret or friendship will be exposed unless the child complies.
Private-chat invitations are a warning sign, not proof of an offense. A child can say no without investigating the person’s identity. The goal is to preserve control over the conversation and bring in an adult early.
What should my child say when a friend asks for money or a code?
A short script is easier to use under pressure than an explanation. Practice it when nothing is wrong so the child does not have to invent words during a stressful exchange.
“I don’t share codes, passwords, money or valuable items. I’m checking with my adult first.”

Adults should acknowledge that the relationship may have felt genuine: “I understand why you trusted them. You are not in trouble for telling me. We will handle the request together.” Roblox’s parent resources recommend supportive conversations and boundaries rather than blaming a child for being deceived. Roblox parent resources provide platform-specific safety information.
How can caregivers set rules without shaming a child?
Agree on one household rule that covers games, social apps and direct messages: no sending money, gift-card numbers, passwords, verification codes or valuable virtual items because an online contact asks. The child pauses and checks first, including when the requester claims to be a close online friend.
Write the rule in the same language the child sees on screen. Practice with low-pressure examples: a stranger offering free currency, a familiar player asking for a “temporary” login, and a friend saying a gift-card code is needed immediately. Ask the child to identify what is being requested, what would leave their control and whom they would tell.
Review controls together rather than presenting them as surveillance. The FTC describes limiting who can communicate with a child and restricting in-game spending. Roblox describes monthly spending limits, age-dependent trusted-friend features, two-step verification and passkeys. Menus and names can change, so open the platform’s current parent or account settings and confirm what each control does before relying on it. Controls can reduce access and spending; they cannot reliably detect manipulation or prove that a contact is safe.

What if my child already sent a code, money or an item?
Start by establishing what was shared and whether the requester is threatening the child. Stay calm, keep the child with you and avoid promises that money, an account or an image can definitely be recovered.
- Secure the account. From an official app or site, change the password, sign out other sessions, enable two-step verification or a passkey, and check recovery email, phone number and payment details. Do not use a link supplied by the requester.
- Contact the payment provider. For a card or payment app, use the provider’s official fraud channel promptly and ask what cancellation or dispute options exist. A gift-card number may already have been redeemed, so recovery is uncertain.
- Preserve evidence. Save screenshots, usernames, profile links, dates, receipts and the exact messages. Do not forward intimate images or create additional copies of them.
- Block and report. Use the platform’s reporting path after evidence is preserved. Blocking prevents further contact but does not replace reporting.
- Escalate threats. If the child is being blackmailed, threatened with exposure or targeted with sexual exploitation, involve a trusted adult and law enforcement. The FBI lists a local field office, 1-800-CALL-FBI and tips.fbi.gov, and points families to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline. The FBI’s child-safety guidance explains these options.
Do not pay an extorter in the hope that the threat will reliably end. The FBI warns that payment does not guarantee that material will remain private and cautions against for-profit services that charge victims for supposed sextortion help. For intimate images made when the person was under 18, the FBI also identifies NCMEC’s Take It Down as a separate support resource.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is blackmail different from an ordinary deceptive trade?
A deceptive trade or fake giveaway tries to obtain money, credentials or items through a promise. Blackmail adds a threat to expose information or images unless the child pays or complies. The latter is an urgent safety and exploitation issue, even if the contact originally approached as a friend.
The FBI reported more than 13,000 reports of online financial sextortion of minors from October 2021 through March 2023 in a 2024 announcement. That historical agency figure concerns financial sextortion only; it is not a prevalence estimate for friendship scams, gaming scams or all children. The FBI’s sextortion guidance describes the threat pattern and response.

Do not make the child prove that a friendship was fake before setting boundaries. Keep communication in moderated, age-appropriate spaces, refuse secrecy and never exchange credentials or money. A contact who respects a pause and an adult check may still be unknown; a contact who insists on secrecy, access or payment has provided a clear reason to disengage.

Focus on behavior rather than labels. The question is not whether every online friend is a scammer—it is whether this request asks the child to surrender money, access, valuable items or private material. If so, the answer is no until a trusted adult has independently verified what is happening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a scammer really be someone my child has known online for months?
Yes. Time and familiarity can be used to create confidence, but they do not verify a person’s identity or intentions. Keep the same boundaries for long-term contacts: no secrets, payments, passwords, codes or high-value trades.
Should I delete the chat after blocking the account?
No, preserve relevant messages, usernames, profile details and receipts before deleting or reporting if it is safe. Evidence can help the platform, a payment provider or law enforcement understand what happened.

Does two-step verification stop friendship scams?
It can make account takeover harder, but it cannot stop a child from voluntarily sending a gift-card number, transferring an item or responding to blackmail. Pair account security with a no-sharing rule and a practiced pause.
