To change difficulty in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, find and interact with a Spirit Mirror, then choose the difficulty-change option. You can switch between Story and Action during the same playthrough. Carnage is a replay challenge: it unlocks after you complete the game, must be chosen when starting a new game, and is locked for that run once selected.
The quick choice: Story offers a lower-pressure way to learn the combat and follow the narrative; Action is for players who want more demanding battles. Save Carnage for a completed-game replay, because you cannot switch away from it after choosing it. If you want help reading enemy attacks, Action Prompts are a separate Gameplay setting and do not require you to lower the difficulty.
At a glance
| Mode | Availability | Can you change it mid-run? | Best suited to | Combat pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Story | Available from the beginning | Yes; switch to or from Action at a Spirit Mirror | Players learning the combat or prioritizing the narrative | Lower pressure |
| Action | Available from the beginning | Yes; switch to or from Story at a Spirit Mirror | Players who want more demanding battles | Challenging |
| Carnage | Unlocks after completing the game; choose it when starting a new game | No; locked once selected for that run | Players looking for a high-stakes replay challenge | A single hit can mean death |
Story and Action are the flexible choices: both are available from the start, and you can move between them during an active run. Carnage is different in both timing and commitment. It is a post-completion option selected at the start of a new game, not a setting to try temporarily at a mirror.

The available guidance identifies the option by its purpose rather than establishing a more specific on-screen label. If you do not see it, make sure you are interacting with a Spirit Mirror rather than browsing the general Settings menu. In particular, do not confuse the Gameplay settings with the difficulty-change route: Settings is where Action Prompts are adjusted, while a Spirit Mirror is the main route for changing between Story and Action.
Where is the difficulty setting?
Look for a Spirit Mirror in the game world and interact with it. That is the key distinction if you have been searching the system menu: the general Settings menu is not the documented place to switch difficulty. A mirror is also the clearest option if you are already playing and want to adjust the challenge without abandoning the run.
The exact wording of the menu option is not consistently specified in published guidance, so look for the option that changes difficulty rather than relying on a quoted label. Choose Story or Action, confirm, and continue. The rule described for an active run applies to those two modes; it does not override Carnage’s new-game restriction.

Can I switch from Action to Story without restarting?
Yes. Story and Action can be changed in either direction during an active run by using a Spirit Mirror, so a difficult section does not by itself require starting over.
That flexibility makes Action a reasonable starting point for experienced action-game players who want battles to stay demanding but would rather have a fallback if a boss becomes a wall. Conversely, a player who starts in Story can move to Action when ordinary encounters feel manageable. The documented switching rule applies to Story and Action; it does not make Carnage a mid-run option.
There is also a possible fallback after repeated failures: a death-screen route may offer Story. Treat that as a secondary possibility, not the main instruction, because its availability is described less consistently than the Spirit Mirror method. If you want to make a deliberate adjustment, use a Spirit Mirror when you can reach one.
Do not assume that every fight has a mirror nearby or that a difficulty option is available during the middle of a boss encounter. The established route is interaction with a Spirit Mirror, and it does not guarantee an in-fight control. If you cannot reach one, the clearest supported guidance is to adjust at the next accessible mirror rather than search through unrelated settings.

What is the difference between Story, Action, and Carnage?
Story lowers the pressure, Action is intended for challenging battles, and Carnage is a locked, high-stakes mode for a replay after completing the game. The practical choice is how much room you want to learn or recover while fighting.
Story: learn the defensive timing
Story is intended for players who want to focus on the narrative and is recommended for action-game beginners. It is a sensible place to learn the timing for guarding, deflecting, parrying, and Issen attacks, or to reduce repeated attempts against a boss.
It is not just a setting for players who have never touched an action game. You might choose Story when you want to spend less of your attention on repeated attempts, when you are still learning how to read incoming attacks, or when a particular stretch is interrupting your enjoyment of the story. Since Story and Action can be switched at a Spirit Mirror, choosing Story does not commit you to finishing the whole run that way.
Action: keep encounters demanding
Action is for players who already understand the combat loop and want fights to require more attention. Unlike Carnage, it can be changed to Story at a Spirit Mirror during the run.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAction is a useful default for players who want a meaningful challenge but do not want the all-or-nothing commitment of Carnage. If you already know how to watch enemy movement and respond with defensive timing, start here. If the pressure stops being enjoyable, the route to Story remains available at a Spirit Mirror. Conversely, if you begin on Story and regular fights become comfortable, you can try Action without restarting.
Carnage: reserve it for a replay
Carnage is unavailable at the start. Complete the game first, then select Carnage when beginning a new game; after that selection, the mode cannot be changed during that run. A community-maintained Onimusha.tools database associates completing Carnage with special rewards and the True Onimusha achievement, but that association should not be read as a claim about other unlock requirements.
Think of the restriction as part of the challenge. Unlike a Story or Action run, Carnage is not suited to experimenting with the setting and switching back if the pressure proves too high. If you are interested in it for the rewards or achievement, first complete the game, then make sure you are deliberately starting the replay in Carnage. The documented information establishes the unlock and locked selection, but not whether upgrades, equipment, or other progress carry over into the new game.

How the modes compare in practice
The useful comparison is not only how hard each mode feels, but also when it becomes available and whether you can change your mind. Story and Action are both starting options and share the same Spirit Mirror switching route. That makes them suitable for a first playthrough, whether you begin cautiously or want a tougher baseline.

Carnage is not simply another rung to toggle on at a mirror. It requires a completed game, starts with a new game, and stays selected for that run. Its high-stakes description makes it a replay challenge for players who want the added constraint. Completion is associated with special rewards and the True Onimusha achievement, while exact reward details beyond that association are not established here.
Capcom producer Akihito Kadowaki described the design goal as finding “that balance between satisfying gameplay and difficulty,” rather than simply making a very difficult game. In a June 12, 2026 interview with Xbox Wire, he also said the team worked on “a lot of different difficulty options rather than just a binary choice” to make the experience accessible to a wide range of players. That philosophy aligns with the practical flexibility of being able to adjust between Story and Action during a run, while Carnage remains a separate replay commitment.
Can I turn on Action Prompts without lowering the difficulty?
Yes. Action Prompts are a separate Gameplay setting, not a difficulty mode, so you can use them while playing on Action. They display icons that indicate how to respond to enemy attacks.
To change them, open System Menu > Settings > Gameplay and adjust Action Prompts. They are enabled by default according to the Onimusha.tools game database. Keeping them on while learning attack responses can help you read encounters without switching to Story; turn them off if they become unnecessary.

This distinction matters if you want a challenging fight but are not yet confident about recognizing every attack. Prompts provide a visual cue about how to respond; choosing Story changes the overall difficulty mode. They solve different problems, so there is no need to change to Story just to get attack-response icons. You can keep Action Prompts enabled on Story or Action, and the prompt option is not a fourth difficulty setting.
A practical approach is to leave prompts on while learning the defensive timing, then revisit the Gameplay menu once the icons are no longer useful. If you find that prompts are helping you understand attacks but fights still feel too punishing, you can also change from Action to Story at a Spirit Mirror. Either adjustment is independent of the other.

Which difficulty should I choose for my first playthrough?
Choose Story if demanding action combat is unfamiliar or you want more attention available for the narrative and timing practice. Choose Action if you already know the defensive basics and want battles to feel tense from the outset.
- New to this style of combat: Start on Story and focus on learning guard, deflect, parry, and Issen timing.
- Comfortable with action games: Start on Action; you can still switch to Story at a Spirit Mirror if a fight becomes a roadblock.
- Looking for a replay challenge: Save Carnage for after completing the game, and choose it only when you are comfortable with a mode that cannot be changed for that run.
- Need help reading attacks: Use Action Prompts independently of whether you play on Story or Action.
These are practical recommendations based on the modes’ descriptions and restrictions, not a required order set by Capcom.
If you are undecided between Story and Action, consider what you want from the first few hours rather than treating the initial choice as permanent. Story gives you more room to practice and keep attention on the narrative. Action asks more of you during battles, but can still be adjusted later. A new player who wants to learn under less pressure can start on Story and move up once encounters feel manageable; an experienced player can begin on Action and step down if a boss becomes a persistent wall.
For a first run, the main reason not to select Carnage is its restriction, not a need to prove yourself on a particular setting. It is unavailable until after completion and cannot be changed once selected for a run. That makes it a poor fit for someone who wants the option to lower pressure as they learn. Complete the game on Story or Action first, then decide whether the high-stakes replay is appealing.
Are the difficulty differences measured in official numbers?
The cited sources do not provide an official Capcom health or damage multiplier for Story, Action, and Carnage. A community-maintained Onimusha.tools database, recorded in a 2026 crawl, reports that in the final mission an enemy on Carnage has 1.7 times the health and 1.9 times the damage of the same enemy on Action. Those are community-reported figures, not official Capcom statistics, and should not be treated as universal values for every enemy or encounter.
The figures can give a sense of the reported gap in that particular comparison, but they do not establish a multiplier for Story or prove that every opponent changes by the same amount. Capcom’s official release material identifies Onimusha: Way of the Sword as a swordplay-action title and lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC among its platforms; it does not publish a difficulty formula in the material cited here. For choosing a setting, the supported descriptions—lower pressure, challenging battles, and Carnage’s high-stakes risk—are more useful than treating one community-reported final-mission comparison as a universal rule.
What should I know before selecting Carnage?
Unlike Story and Action, Carnage is not a setting to experiment with and then reverse at a Spirit Mirror. It unlocks after the game is completed, is chosen when starting a new game, and stays locked for that run. If you are unsure whether you want that constraint, play through on Story or Action first and decide about Carnage for a later run.

Also separate what is confirmed from what is not. The completion unlock, new-game selection, inability to switch, high-stakes description, and association with special rewards and the True Onimusha achievement are documented. The available details do not establish how save slots work, whether a particular boss or collectible changes with difficulty, or whether upgrades and equipment carry over. Do not choose Carnage on the assumption that it behaves like a particular New Game Plus system.
Capcom’s June 3, 2026 release material identifies Onimusha: Way of the Sword as a swordplay-action game and lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC among its platforms. Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing difficulty reset my save or progress?
Story and Action can be switched during the same run at a Spirit Mirror, so you do not need to start a new game just to move between those modes. The available guidance does not specify save-slot behavior or every detail of how progress is recorded. If preserving a particular run matters, use a Spirit Mirror rather than starting a new game to change between Story and Action.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The documented route is to interact with a Spirit Mirror, and the available guidance does not establish whether one is accessible during every boss encounter. If you cannot reach a mirror, there is no verified separate in-fight difficulty control; adjust at an accessible Spirit Mirror instead.
Does Carnage carry over upgrades from a completed game?
Carnage unlocks after completing the game and is selected when starting a new game, but the available details do not establish whether equipment, upgrades, or other progress carry over. Do not assume it works like a particular New Game Plus system; check the game’s own new-game options.
Is Carnage available from the beginning?
No. Complete the game first, then select Carnage when starting a new game. Once selected, it cannot be changed during that run.
Can I use Action Prompts on Action difficulty?
Yes. Action Prompts are a separate option under System Menu > Settings > Gameplay. They display icons indicating how to respond to enemy attacks and do not require you to switch to Story.

A death-screen route may offer Story after several consecutive failures, but the clearest, main method for changing from Action to Story is to use a Spirit Mirror. The availability of the death-screen option is not established for every situation.
Does difficulty change story chapters, bosses, or collectibles?
The documented mode guidance establishes how difficulty is selected and switched, but does not establish that Story, Action, or Carnage changes chapters, bosses, or collectibles.
The Bottom Line
Use a Spirit Mirror to switch between Story and Action during a run. Choose Story for lower-pressure learning, Action for more demanding battles, and keep Action Prompts on if you want attack-response cues without changing difficulty. Carnage unlocks after completion, must be selected for a new game, and cannot be changed once that run begins—so save it for a replay you are ready to keep high-stakes.
