The OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro is a compact, premium mechanical keyboard built for people who want a substantial desk setup and deep key customization—not a lightweight board to carry around. Its aluminum body, hot-swappable switches, QMK/VIA support and wired or Bluetooth operation are appealing; its nearly 1.9 kg listed weight, setup friction and edition-specific typing feel make it a less obvious fit for everyone.
What the OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro offers
OnePlus developed the 81-key keyboard with Keychron involvement. It uses a compact ANSI layout, an aluminum body, RGB lighting and a 75-percent-style arrangement that leaves off the number pad. OnePlus lists dimensions of 33.83 × 15.05 × 4.73 cm and a mass of 1,887 g ±20 g. That mass can help the keyboard stay put on a desk, but it is a notable trade-off if you move your keyboard often. OnePlus’s product specifications identify the layout and physical details.
For input, the board supports USB-C wired use and Bluetooth 5.1. OnePlus lists compatibility with Mac, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. A rotary knob can also be reassigned through customization software; TechCrunch noted that this can suit creative workflows, depending on how it is configured. TechCrunch’s July 2023 review discusses the knob and compact layout.
How the two editions differ—and why that matters
The two versions are not interchangeable descriptions of one typing experience. PCWorld reviewed the Summer Breeze edition and described its switches as smooth, quiet and linear. Its discussion of Winter Bonfire identifies tactile switches and PBT keycaps, but the reviewer did not test that edition. PCWorld’s review makes that distinction; check the specific version and switch type before buying.

WIRED’s reviewer likewise found a soft typing feel on the model tested and emphasized that it is a matter of preference: “The first collaboration between OnePlus and Keychron is a heavy, customizable keyboard with a soft typing experience—if you’re into that kind of thing.” That is a subjective review judgment, not a measured performance result. WIRED rated it 7/10 in August 2023, praising customization while warning that VIA can be difficult for beginners.
Remapping keys with QMK and VIA
QMK/VIA support and hot-swappable switches give the keyboard more scope for customization than a fixed-layout board. Hot-swapping means switches can be changed without soldering, but it does not establish that every third-party switch or keycap will fit; verify compatibility for the exact part and board before ordering.

OnePlus’s India support FAQ says VIA setup and remapping require a wired connection. If VIA does not recognize the keyboard automatically, the FAQ says you may need to load the keyboard’s keymap JSON manually. This is useful flexibility, but it is not necessarily plug-and-play for a first-time VIA user. See OnePlus’s FAQ for remapping and VIA setup.
Wireless battery life: what OnePlus claims
OnePlus specifies a 4,000mAh battery and advertises up to 100 hours of use over Bluetooth with RGB at its lowest brightness. It estimates around five hours to charge. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; actual runtime will depend on settings and use. PCWorld reported that RGB reduced battery life in that reviewer’s wireless setup, but did not establish a general runtime figure.

Fit, comfort and everyday trade-offs
Desk use versus portability
The listed 1,887 g ±20 g mass makes this a desk-first keyboard. PCWorld also found it too heavy to carry around. If the board will stay in one place, that heft may be welcome; if you commute with your keyboard, it is a clear disadvantage.
Layout and typing posture
The 75-percent-style layout saves desk space by omitting a number pad, but it also packs keys more tightly than a full-size board. TechCrunch found some modifier-key combinations cramped. PCWorld said the typing posture felt tall enough that the reviewer used a wrist rest. Neither observation guarantees the same experience for every user, so consider your preferred layout and hand position.

Legends and lighting
RGB illuminates the keyboard, but PCWorld noted that the key legends themselves are not backlit. If you depend on illuminated legends to read keys in a dark room, that distinction matters.
Is the OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro worth it?
It makes the strongest case for someone who wants a sturdy, highly configurable compact keyboard, expects to leave it on a desk and is willing to learn VIA. The case is weaker if low weight, a number pad, easy software setup or backlit legends are priorities. Switch preference also matters: the quiet, linear Summer Breeze experience reported by PCWorld should not be assumed for Winter Bonfire.
