To connect OneHop AI Gateway to Cline, choose OpenAI Compatible as Cline’s API provider, set the base URL to https://api.onehop.ai/v1, paste an active OneHop API key, and enter the exact model ID available in your OneHop account. Save the settings, then ask Cline to complete a small coding task to confirm the connection.
The most common failures are a wrong endpoint, an incomplete or mistyped key, a model ID that does not exactly match OneHop’s account list, unavailable account permissions, or a network rule blocking the endpoint.
What you need before configuring Cline
Have these items ready before opening the Cline settings panel:

- The official Cline extension, published by Autonomous Coding Agent. Open its panel after installation.
- An active OneHop account with access to the API.
- A OneHop API key created from the account’s API Keys area.
- The exact model identifier that OneHop makes available to your account.
- A network connection that can reach
https://api.onehop.ai/v1.
Cline does not need a special OneHop plug-in for this connection. It uses its OpenAI-compatible provider settings, which are designed for a third-party service that exposes an OpenAI-style API.

How to connect OneHop to Cline
1. Install and open Cline in VS Code
- Open VS Code and install the official Cline extension published by Autonomous Coding Agent.
- Open the Cline panel from the VS Code activity bar or the extension’s command entry.
- Wait for the panel to load before changing provider settings. If the panel is not present, confirm that the extension is installed and enabled in the current VS Code profile.
2. Create and protect a OneHop API key
- Sign in to OneHop.
- Open API Keys.
- Create a new key and copy it when it is displayed.
- Store the key in a password manager or another private location before leaving the page.
Treat the key like a password. Do not publish it in a repository, screenshot, screen recording, issue, source file, or front-end application. If a key is exposed, revoke it in OneHop and create a replacement rather than continuing to use the compromised value.
3. Select the OpenAI-compatible provider
- In the Cline panel, select the settings gear.
- Find API Provider.
- Choose OpenAI Compatible.
This provider choice tells Cline to send requests to a configurable third-party OpenAI-style endpoint. Selecting an official-provider option would point Cline at a different authentication and service configuration.
4. Enter OneHop’s base URL
In the Base URL field, enter:
https://api.onehop.ai/v1
Keep the /v1 path. OneHop uses this same base URL in its OpenAI client example. Do not substitute an official OpenAI URL, a web dashboard URL, or a guessed path. A URL that looks almost right can still send requests to the wrong service or produce a connection failure.
5. Enter the API key
Paste the key into Cline’s API Key field. Check the beginning and end of the value for accidental spaces, line breaks, or quotation marks. Use a key belonging to the OneHop account where the intended model is enabled.

6. Enter the exact model ID
Fill in Model with the identifier currently supplied by OneHop for your account. The model field is not a descriptive nickname; it is the routing identifier sent with the request.
Model availability can change, and account permissions can limit which models work. Copy the current identifier from OneHop rather than relying on an old tutorial example. For example, openai/gpt-5.6-terra and gpt-5.6-terra are different strings. If OneHop lists one form, entering the other form can result in a model-not-found response.
7. Save and run a small coding task
- Save or close the Cline settings so the provider values are applied.
- Ask Cline for a narrowly scoped task, such as: Write a TypeScript function that reverses a string and add a test for an empty string and a normal word.
- Wait for Cline to return a response and, if requested, create the small file or test in a disposable project area.
- Confirm that the response contains a coherent answer rather than an authentication, model, or connection error.
A successful short task verifies the basic path from Cline through OneHop to the selected model. It does not prove that every model, tool capability, context size, or account limit is available; those characteristics belong to the selected model and your OneHop account.
Why OpenAI Compatible is the correct Cline provider
Cline’s OpenAI-compatible configuration is built around three provider-specific values: a base URL, an API key, and a model ID. The base URL tells Cline where to send the API request, the key authenticates the request, and the model ID tells the gateway which model should handle it.
OneHop describes its service as a unified gateway that places hundreds of AI models behind one API and one key, with routing, billing, and failover handled on its backend. That is a statement from OneHop, not an independently measured reliability result. Cline therefore needs the OpenAI-compatible interface exposed by OneHop rather than a separate Cline integration supplied by each underlying model provider.

OneHop also says it supports OpenAI, Anthropic, and Vertex protocols. In this Cline setup, choose the OpenAI-compatible path because that is the protocol represented by the Cline settings described above. Protocol support elsewhere in the gateway does not change the provider selection inside Cline.

How the request travels from Cline to OneHop
- You submit a task in the Cline panel.
- Cline builds a request using the configured model ID and its coding-task context.
- The OpenAI-compatible adapter sends that request to the base URL you entered.
- OneHop authenticates the API key and routes the request according to the model ID and account access.
- The selected model returns a response through OneHop, and Cline displays it in VS Code.
This flow explains why all three values matter together. A valid key at the wrong URL cannot authenticate against the intended gateway, and a correct URL and key still fail if the model string is unavailable to the account.
Verify more than just a saved settings panel
Cline may retain a configuration even when no request has been sent. Use a controlled test so you can distinguish a saved form from a working connection.
Use a small, deterministic prompt
Start with a task that needs little context and no external files. A short string-reversal function plus two tests is useful because it produces an observable code response without consuming a large context window.
Check the response behavior
- Cline should return an answer from the selected model instead of immediately reporting a request, authentication, or model error.
- The response should correspond to the task you asked for, which helps identify a model or parameter issue that a bare connection check might miss.
- If Cline proposes edits, review the diff before accepting it. A successful API connection is not a guarantee that generated code is correct.
Test a second model only when needed
If the first model is available but produces an unexpected response, try another model that OneHop explicitly lists for your account. This separates a gateway connection problem from a model-specific configuration or capability issue.

Troubleshoot by symptom

When the error appears immediately
An immediate failure usually points to the values Cline can validate before a model generates anything. Recheck the provider selection first, then the complete base URL, then the key, and finally the model ID. Comparing every character is faster than changing several fields at once because it preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail.
When authentication fails after a delay
Open OneHop’s API-key page and verify that the key has not been revoked or disabled. Copy it again without adding quotes. If you manage several accounts, confirm that the key and model access belong to the same intended account.
When only one model fails
Leave the provider and endpoint unchanged and test a different model that OneHop lists for the account. If the second model works, the original identifier or its account permission is the likely issue. If both fail, return to endpoint, key, and network checks.
When every request fails from a managed network
Ask the network administrator whether outbound HTTPS requests to the OneHop API endpoint are allowed. Cline’s documentation recommends verifying endpoint reachability when a connection error occurs. A browser login to OneHop does not by itself prove that API traffic from the development machine is permitted.

Model IDs, permissions, and changing models
The model field is the most common source of confusion because model names shown in articles, examples, or SDK snippets may not be the identifiers enabled for your account. A gateway can expose a provider prefix, a version suffix, or another naming component that must be preserved.

- Open the current model list or model-selection information in OneHop.
- Copy the full identifier, including any provider prefix, slash, hyphen, period, or version text.
- Paste it into Cline’s Model field without adding explanatory text.
- Save the setting and run the same small test task.
- If the model is rejected, check account-level access before changing the endpoint.
Do not infer availability from a model’s public name. OneHop’s tutorial examples are illustrative, while the available list and account permissions can change.
Security practices for a Cline API key
- Keep the key in Cline’s protected settings rather than hard-coding it into a project file.
- Never commit the key to Git, paste it into a README, or include it in screenshots, recordings, support issues, or front-end code.
- Use separate keys for separate people or environments when OneHop’s account controls allow it, so a leaked development key can be revoked without disrupting every user.
- Rotate a key immediately if it appears in a public or shared location.
- Review generated code and tool actions even after the connection succeeds; authentication proves identity, not the safety or correctness of generated changes.
Billing and gateway behavior to understand
OneHop states that its service uses usage-based prepaid credits, one unified bill, and transparent markup, with no monthly minimum. It also states that unused account balance can be refunded at any time. These are current vendor claims and may change, so check the terms and account dashboard before relying on them for budgeting or a production workflow.
The gateway model can simplify integration because Cline uses one endpoint and one key while the gateway handles model routing. It can also introduce account-level limits, model permissions, gateway markup, and another service dependency. Consider those trade-offs when deciding whether a single gateway should be used for a personal project, a team, or a production automation.

If you have changed several settings and no longer know which value is wrong, reset the diagnosis rather than guessing:
- Set API Provider to OpenAI Compatible.
- Replace the base URL with exactly
https://api.onehop.ai/v1. - Copy a currently active OneHop key again, checking for spaces and quotation marks.
- Copy one model ID directly from the account’s current list.
- Save the settings.
- Run the short TypeScript test task.
- If it fails, classify the error as authentication, model, request, or network related and apply only the matching troubleshooting branch.
This sequence creates a known baseline and avoids carrying a stale model name or hidden whitespace into the next test.
