One UI 6.1 is Samsung’s Android 14 update that brought Galaxy AI beyond the Galaxy S24 generation, alongside battery, lock-screen, wallpaper, and Modes and Routines changes. Samsung announced the wider rollout on February 21–22, 2024, with the first wave starting in late March. There was no single worldwide release date: timing and available features depended on the model, region, carrier, and software build.
When did One UI 6.1 come out?
Samsung introduced Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 generation in January 2024. The company announced One UI 6.1 for older Galaxy devices on February 21–22, then began the broader rollout in late March. Dates below are announcement milestones or rollout windows, not a guarantee that every device received an update on that exact day.
| Milestone | Date or window | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy AI introduced with the Galaxy S24 generation | January 2024 product cycle | The S24 generation debuted the Galaxy AI set later expanded through One UI 6.1. This is not a separate OTA date for every S24 model. Samsung’s Galaxy AI compatibility guidance |

What Galaxy AI features does One UI 6.1 include?
Galaxy AI is a branded group of tools, not one uniform capability switched on across every One UI 6.1 device. Samsung warns that AI availability varies by model and software version. Communication and translation
| Feature | What it does | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Chat Assist | Translates messages and suggests changes to their tone. | Samsung’s initial announcement listed 13 supported languages; language and chat-app support can vary. Some functions require a Samsung account or internet connection. |
| Live Translate | Provides voice and text translation during phone calls. | Samsung’s implementation requires its native Phone app, a Samsung account, network access, and supported languages; language packs may be needed. Do not assume it works in third-party calling apps. |
| Interpreter | Shows translated conversation text, with split-screen presentation on supported foldables. | Supported languages and device availability vary. Listening Mode, for one-way translation of spoken content, came with the later expansion and is not a universal original 6.1 feature. |
Samsung describes these tools and their app and language qualifications in its One UI 6.1 announcement.
Search and web browsing
- Circle to Search with Google: Circle, highlight, tap, or select something on screen to search for it. It is Google-powered and requires an internet connection. Results depend on the selected content and context; a Google or Android component update may also be needed.
- Browsing Assist: Summarizes or translates web pages in Samsung Internet. It is not a general feature of every third-party browser.
Notes, recordings, and transcription
- Note Assist: Formats, summarizes, and translates text in Samsung Notes. Samsung’s cited U.S. implementation supports text of approximately 200–4,000 characters for the relevant functions; account and internet requirements apply.
- Transcript Assist: Transcribes recordings and can summarize or translate transcripts. Availability depends on device, language, region, and recording app.
Some recording functions are not supported in every country. Samsung’s U.S. expansion announcement gives the qualifications for these tools: One UI 6.1 and Galaxy AI expansion.
Photo editing and wallpaper
- Generative Edit: Lets you resize, reposition, or realign objects in a photo. The cited implementation can produce resized output up to 12 megapixels; network access and a Samsung account are required. Saved results carry a visible AI-generated-content watermark. Samsung does not guarantee that edits will be accurate or realistic.
- Edit Suggestion: Offers possible improvements to photos and supported media. Samsung lists JPG, PNG, GIF, and MP4 compatibility, but results vary with the source and shooting conditions.
- AI-Generated Wallpaper: Creates wallpaper options from generative prompts or preset categories. Availability and categories vary by model and region.
Generative edits can look convincing while being wrong, especially around people, text, hands, architecture, or object boundaries. Check the result before sharing or relying on it. Feature details and availability are outlined in Samsung’s One UI 6.1 announcement.

What else changed in One UI 6.1?
Battery protection modes
One UI 6.1 added Basic, Adaptive, and Maximum battery-protection modes. Basic charges to 100%, then resumes after the charge level falls below a lower threshold. Adaptive adjusts charging around sleep and expected wake times. Maximum stops charging at 80% to reduce long-term battery stress. Menu presentation and behavior can vary by device. The usual path is Settings → Battery → Battery protection; if it differs, search Settings for “Battery protection.” Samsung battery-protection guidance

Lock-screen widgets and wallpaper
One UI 6.1 added more lock-screen widget options, including examples such as Weather, Samsung Health, Battery, Reminder, Calendar, and Clock, as well as more wallpaper-editing options. The exact set depends on the model. Samsung device update notes
Modes and Routines, security, and privacy
- A Mode widget can be added to the Home screen, and wallpapers can be associated with specific Modes.
- Additional routine conditions were introduced, including more media-related conditions in some builds. Availability depends on the device and software build. Samsung One UI features
- Samsung also documented security and data-protection improvements. These are One UI changes, not Galaxy AI features. Samsung One UI features

| Announced group | Models | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| First wave | Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, S23 FE; Galaxy Z Fold5, Z Flip5; Galaxy Tab S9, Tab S9+, Tab S9 Ultra | Announced for the broad One UI 6.1 and Galaxy AI expansion, beginning in late March 2024. | Second U.S. expansion | Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra; Galaxy Z Fold4, Z Flip4; Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S8+, Tab S8 Ultra | Samsung announced the U.S. expansion on May 10, 2024. Available AI functions can differ from the S24 experience. Samsung U.S. Newsroom |
| Limited Galaxy AI support | Galaxy S21 series; Galaxy Z Fold3, Z Flip3 | Samsung named Circle to Search with Google and Chat Assist, not the full Galaxy AI set. Samsung U.S. Newsroom |
Samsung’s current compatibility guidance includes devices beyond these 2024 announcement groups, but eligibility and feature sets vary by device and software version. Some FE models have limitations, and older compatible devices may need a software update. Check the exact model rather than treating “One UI 6.1 compatible” as a promise of full AI support. One UI 6.1 versus One UI 6.1.1
One UI 6.1.1 was a later expansion, beginning in September 2024, that brought newer features to supported devices. Samsung used the 6.1.1 label primarily on foldables and tablets, while some phones showed One UI 6.1 even when they received features associated with the later expansion. The version number shown on a phone is therefore not, by itself, a complete feature checklist. Samsung One UI 6.1.1 announcement
Later additions included Composer, Sketch to Image, Listening Mode, and expanded Instant Slow-mo availability on supported models. Do not assume these were part of the original One UI 6.1 release or that every device labeled 6.1 received all of them.

Accounts, internet, privacy, and accuracy limits
Account and connectivity
Some Galaxy AI functions require a Samsung account and internet connection; others can run on-device. Samsung’s current documentation gives examples of on-device processing such as translation and certain ambient-wallpaper functions, while auto-formatting, summarization, auto-correction, and image editing may use cloud processing. Availability of on-device processing does not mean every AI tool works offline. Samsung guidance on Galaxy AI processing
Samsung says users can restrict Galaxy AI processing to on-device functions through Galaxy AI settings. Cloud-dependent tools may then be unavailable or limited; check each feature’s requirements before relying on it. Samsung privacy and processing guidance
Language, app, and output limits
- Translation and writing tools depend on supported languages and, in some cases, downloaded language packs.
- Live Translate is tied to Samsung’s Phone app; Browsing Assist is tied to Samsung Internet.
- Summaries, transcripts, translations, and generated edits can contain errors. Verify important information rather than treating an AI result as authoritative.
- Generative Edit adds a visible AI watermark to saved results and can create plausible but inaccurate details.
Cost policy is not a permanent guarantee
Samsung’s 2024 announcement said supported Galaxy AI features would be free through the end of 2025. That historical statement does not establish a permanent no-cost policy or a 2026 guarantee. Samsung U.S. Newsroom

How to check for One UI 6.1 and find Galaxy AI settings
- Open Settings → Software update → Download and install. The wording may vary by software build.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions and allow the installation to complete.
- After updating, check Settings → Galaxy AI, if that menu is available, or search Settings for the feature name.
- Install available Samsung app and system-component updates if a listed feature is still missing.
Why might a Galaxy AI feature be missing?
The device may have only partial support
Check the exact model and software version. The S21 series, Fold3, and Flip3 were announced for selected features rather than the full Galaxy AI set. Some later devices also have model-specific limits. Samsung compatibility guidance
The feature may require a later software branch
A feature introduced with One UI 6.1.1 may not be present in the original 6.1 build, even if Samsung later delivered it to a phone that still displays “One UI 6.1.” Check the device’s update notes and the feature’s model requirements.
Account, connection, language, or app requirements may be unmet
Sign in to a Samsung account where required, check internet access, install any needed language pack, and open the supported Samsung app. A feature listed for Samsung Phone or Samsung Internet may not appear in a third-party alternative.
Rollout timing may differ
Carrier certification, country, and device edition can affect OTA timing. If no update appears, use Settings → Software update → Download and install again later or check Samsung’s support information for the specific model and region.
