Yes—a local relay can give VS Code one OpenAI-compatible chat endpoint while it routes requests to an authenticated ChatGPT or Gemini browser session. Onwuka Gideon describes Chat Model Relay as a self-hosted, experimental gateway that connects an IDE client to a logged-in browser session. The arrangement can reuse an existing web subscription instead of adding separate provider API integrations, but browser automation introduces session, compatibility, privacy, and account-policy risks that do not exist in the same form with official APIs.
What this gateway actually is
The project is not a new model and it is not an official ChatGPT or Gemini connector. It is a local translation layer. VS Code sends a chat-completions-style request to the relay; the relay selects a provider session, drives the provider’s web interface through an authenticated persistent browser session, then converts the response back into the format the IDE expects.
Gideon explains the motivation this way: “I wanted to use my existing ChatGPT and Gemini browser sessions from developer tools such as VS Code without managing separate API keys, model subscriptions, and provider-specific integrations.” He also calls Chat Model Relay “a self-hosted, experimental gateway that connects an IDE client to a logged-in browser session.” Those descriptions define both its appeal and its boundary: the relay is an integration experiment around web sessions, not a replacement for provider APIs.

- VS Code, or an extension using the VS Code Language Model API, creates a chat request.
- The request is sent to the relay through a local custom endpoint.
- The relay applies session routing and translates the request into the interaction expected by ChatGPT or Gemini in a browser.
- The provider’s logged-in web session generates a response.
- The relay translates text, attachments, tool calls, or other supported output back to the IDE.
The local boundary matters. In the described design, the relay can remain on the developer’s machine, while the browser session handles provider authentication. That is materially different from exposing a public server that accepts requests from the internet.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why use a relay instead of separate provider integrations?
- One IDE endpoint: VS Code can address a single custom endpoint while the relay chooses ChatGPT or Gemini.
- Existing web access: the design aims to reuse authenticated browser sessions and the subscriptions already attached to them.
- Provider abstraction: model selection and session routing can be kept behind the relay rather than configured independently in every editor extension.
- Feature translation: the project claims support for attachments, vision requests, tool-call translation, persistent conversations, and image-generation requests where the provider session permits them.
- Self-hosting: requests can be handled by software running on the developer’s own machine instead of a third-party hosted gateway.
These are project claims, not independently measured guarantees. Browser interfaces change, provider accounts differ by region and plan, and a feature that works in one session may fail in another. Treat the relay as experimental until you have tested the exact models, account tier, files, and tools you intend to use.
Capabilities attributed to Chat Model Relay
The project description lists the following capabilities. The qualification column shows how strongly each should be treated when planning a production workflow.
| Capability | What it means in practice | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI-compatible chat completions | VS Code or another client can send requests using a familiar chat-completions interface. | Claimed by the project; verify request and response compatibility with your client. |
| ChatGPT browser sessions | Requests can be routed through a logged-in ChatGPT web session. | Claimed by the author; dependent on a valid persistent browser session. |
| Gemini browser sessions | Requests can be routed through a logged-in Gemini web session. | Claimed by the author; dependent on account access and UI compatibility. |
| Custom model endpoints in VS Code | The relay can serve as the endpoint selected by a VS Code model provider configuration. | Fits the custom-endpoint/BYOK architecture documented by VS Code. |
| Persistent conversations and session routing | Conversation state and provider-session selection can be kept across requests. | Project claim; persistence behavior should be tested after restart and reauthentication. |
| File attachments and vision | Files or images can be passed into supported provider conversations. | Project claim; file size, type, and account limits still apply. |
| Tool-call translation | Tool requests can be converted between the IDE’s format and the browser provider’s interaction. | Project claim; tool schemas and failure handling need validation per tool. |
| Image generation where supported | An image request may be sent through a provider session that exposes image generation. | Conditional project claim, not a promise that every model or plan supports it. |
| Long-prompt attachment fallback | Large prompt content can be represented as an attachment when direct prompt handling is unsuitable. | Project claim; test how the target model receives and cites the attachment. |
| Docker Compose deployment | The relay can be deployed as a Compose-managed service rather than run only as a foreground process. | Project claim; the required image, volumes, ports, and secrets are not established in the available project description. |
How to connect it to VS Code
VS Code’s official BYOK documentation says the editor can use models from other providers, local models, and custom endpoints. It also shows a gateway-style URL for chat completions. That makes a local relay a plausible fit for the editor’s provider architecture, but the exact menu labels and fields depend on the VS Code release and the extension or client you are using.

- Run the relay locally. Use the project’s current installation instructions or its Docker Compose definition. Do not copy an unverified command from a third-party post: the canonical repository, license, and security policy are not identified in the project description available here.
- Complete browser sign-in. Authenticate the ChatGPT and/or Gemini session in the browser profile the relay is designed to control. Keep that profile dedicated to the relay if possible, and avoid placing its cookies in a shared or world-readable directory.
- Confirm the local listening address. Record the host, port, and chat-completions path printed by the relay. A client must use the relay’s actual route; an OpenAI-compatible surface does not imply that every OpenAI SDK path is implemented.
- Open VS Code’s model-provider or BYOK configuration. Choose the option for a custom endpoint or gateway, then enter the relay’s local chat-completions address. Select the authentication mode the relay documents; do not assume that a provider API key is required merely because the request format resembles an API.
- Map model names deliberately. Use the model identifiers exposed by the relay, not names copied from an unrelated API. If the relay provides aliases, document which alias maps to ChatGPT and which maps to Gemini so a team member cannot select the wrong browser session.
- Send a small text-only test. Verify that a short prompt returns a complete response before enabling files, images, tools, or long context. Record the response format and error behavior; this becomes your baseline when troubleshooting.
- Test one advanced feature at a time. Add an attachment, then a vision request, then a tool call. A successful text response does not prove that multipart data, streaming, function schemas, or image output are translated correctly.
If your VS Code client insists on a remote HTTPS endpoint, that is a client-policy issue rather than evidence that the relay is broken. A localhost relay and a publicly reachable gateway are different deployment choices; do not expose the local service simply to satisfy an extension without first adding authentication and transport protection.
Do you need separate API keys?
The relay’s stated purpose is to avoid managing separate provider API keys by using logged-in browser sessions. In that narrow sense, you may not need a ChatGPT API key or a Gemini API key for the browser-session path. You still need valid accounts, active web sessions, and whatever subscription or usage permissions those accounts provide.
That convenience is not equivalent to API access. A web subscription can have different limits, model availability, retention behavior, and terms from a provider’s developer API. The relay also has to survive sign-in challenges, expired cookies, changed page layouts, rate limits, and account-specific consent screens. If your workload needs contractual uptime, auditable usage, service accounts, or predictable quotas, an official API is usually the more controllable boundary.

Relay, official API, MCP, and extensions compared
| Approach | Authentication | Network boundary | Provider coverage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browser-session relay | Authenticated persistent browser session | Can remain localhost/self-hosted | ChatGPT and Gemini are the stated targets | Reuses web access, but depends on UI automation and session stability. |
| Official provider APIs | Provider API credentials or the provider’s supported OAuth flow | Client calls provider service endpoints | Only the models and features exposed by each API | More stable integration contract, with separate provider setup and billing. |
| OpenAI MCP connection | Authentication configured for the MCP server | OpenAI’s quickstart uses a publicly reachable HTTPS endpoint, commonly through a tunnel, with an /mcp URL |
MCP tools and resources exposed by that server | Not a localhost-only browser relay; public exposure and authentication must be designed explicitly. |
| Marketplace bridge or extension | Varies by extension and provider | Varies from local server to hosted service | Depends on the listing and its adapters | Faster installation, but maintenance, security, and partner-program status require verification. |
These approaches can coexist. For example, a team might use official APIs for automated builds, a browser-session relay for interactive experimentation, and MCP for a narrowly scoped tool server. The mistake is treating their authentication and exposure models as interchangeable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Security: what changes when a browser session is the credential?
A browser-session relay is effectively handling a credential with broad privileges. Whoever can control the relay process, read its browser profile, or send requests to an unauthenticated local port may be able to act through the signed-in account.
Protect the browser profile
- Use a dedicated browser profile for automation rather than your everyday personal profile.
- Restrict filesystem permissions on profile data, cookies, tokens, screenshots, and relay logs.
- Do not commit profile directories, exported cookies, Compose environment files, or debug captures to source control.
- Sign out and revoke sessions when retiring a machine or moving the relay to another host.
Protect the local endpoint
- Bind the service to localhost unless remote access is an explicit requirement.
- Add authentication if any other device, container, editor process, or teammate can reach the port.
- Do not forward the port from a router or cloud host without HTTPS, access control, rate limiting, and logging.
- Inspect logs for prompts, file contents, cookies, or provider error pages before sharing them.
Separate it from official MCP deployment
OpenAI’s MCP quickstart describes a different pattern: a local MCP server is exposed through a public HTTPS tunnel such as ngrok, configured with an /mcp URL and authentication. That pattern is not evidence that a localhost-only browser relay is an official ChatGPT MCP integration. Use the term MCP only when you are actually exposing an MCP server and meeting its network and authentication requirements.

Reliability limits you should expect
API clients consume a documented machine interface. Browser automation consumes a changing user interface. A provider can change HTML structure, accessibility labels, navigation, login challenges, attachment controls, streaming behavior, or anti-automation checks without preserving the relay’s compatibility.
- Expired session: the relay may return an authentication error or an HTML login page instead of model output. Reauthenticate the dedicated browser profile and repeat the small text test.
- Model alias failure: a model name accepted by VS Code may not map to a currently visible model in the browser. Check the relay’s discovered names and select the provider-specific alias it exposes.
- Attachment failure: text may work while a file or image fails because of size, type, account, or translation limits. Test a small supported file before increasing context.
- Tool-call mismatch: a provider response may contain a tool request that the relay cannot translate exactly. Disable tools for the failing request, then inspect the tool schema and relay logs without exposing sensitive prompt data.
- Streaming or timeout problems: browser responses can arrive in bursts or pause during navigation. Compare a non-streaming request with a streaming request and set client timeouts that reflect the relay’s behavior.
- UI change: a sudden failure after a provider website update is a compatibility event, not necessarily a VS Code configuration error. Pin a known-working relay version only if the project provides a maintained release process.
Docker Compose: useful boundary, not a security guarantee
The project lists Docker Compose deployment as a capability. Compose can make process startup, restart behavior, port mapping, and volume management repeatable, especially on a workstation or home server. It does not automatically protect browser credentials or make a browser automation workflow production-ready.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore running a Compose deployment, identify which volumes contain the persistent browser session, where logs are written, which port is published, and how secrets are injected. Review the container user and filesystem permissions. Avoid publishing the service on all interfaces unless the relay has authentication and the host firewall permits only intended clients. Keep a recovery plan for reauthentication if the persistent profile becomes invalid.

Ready-made VS Code alternatives
Several marketplace listings illustrate other ways to put multiple model providers behind VS Code, but their feature and maintenance claims should be checked before adoption.
- OAI2LMApi advertises OpenAI-compatible APIs connected to the VS Code Language Model API, native Google Gemini support, streaming, automatic model loading, and cached model metadata. Its listing says Gemini uses the native Gemini API format rather than OpenAI compatibility.
- GitHub Copilot API Gateway advertises a local server, OpenAI-compatible usage, Gemini and Ollama support, automatic model discovery, and a default server port of 3030. Treat the port and all other listing details as claims to verify against the current release.
- ChatGPT Copilot advertises GPT models, Gemini, Ollama, MCP, file and image chat, streaming answers, and code assistance inside VS Code.
A marketplace extension may be easier to install than a self-hosted relay, but it can also add another party that handles credentials or prompts. Check the publisher, source availability, update history, permission requests, data path, and whether the advertised provider connection uses official APIs or browser automation.
When this pattern is a good fit
- You already use ChatGPT or Gemini in a browser and want interactive coding help without wiring two separate API integrations.
- You can tolerate occasional reauthentication and debugging after provider UI changes.
- You want a local endpoint for experiments, personal tooling, or a small team that understands the credential risk.
- You need to switch providers while keeping the editor-side request shape mostly stable.
When to choose something else
- Your workload requires unattended CI, predictable quotas, contractual uptime, or audit-ready usage records.
- You cannot allow browser cookies or prompts to be handled by a local automation process.
- You need a stable, documented tool-calling or multimodal contract across upgrades.
- You must expose the service to remote users but cannot operate HTTPS, authentication, authorization, and monitoring.
Questions the project description does not settle
The available project description does not identify a canonical repository, license, security policy, supported browser versions, provider terms-of-use position, release cadence, or independent compatibility tests. Those are decision-critical details for anything beyond personal experimentation. Confirm them from the project’s current primary materials before deploying it for a team, storing sensitive files, or charging users for access.
Quick Recap
Practical decision checklist
- Decide whether browser-session reuse is acceptable for the data you will send.
- Keep the relay on localhost unless you have a concrete, secured remote-access design.
- Use a dedicated browser profile and protect its persistent storage.
- Verify the relay’s actual endpoint, model aliases, authentication behavior, and response format with a text-only request.
- Test attachments, vision, tools, streaming, and image generation separately; treat each as an independent compatibility surface.
- Document how to reauthenticate, rotate access, remove stored sessions, and recover after a provider UI change.
- For production or unattended workloads, compare the relay against official APIs using your requirements for reliability, privacy, billing, and support.
