The arrangement paired digital manufacturing with UPS logistics to serve customers ordering prototypes and production parts. The announcement is historical: it does not establish whether CloudDDM or a successor currently accepts orders.
What opened at UPS Worldport?
CloudDDM announced an industrial additive-manufacturing facility on the UPS Supply Chain Solutions campus at UPS Worldport in Louisville. Its May 5, 2015 announcement described a facility intended to make 3D-printed parts for designers, engineers, startups, small companies, and larger manufacturers. The original Make: article about the opening appeared the following day, May 6, 2015.
CloudDDM framed the facility as direct digital manufacturing: customers could use digital designs to order physical prototypes or parts, rather than relying only on conventional production and inventory. The launch announcement does not provide independently verified comparisons of cost, speed, or performance against other manufacturing methods.
Why locate a 3D-printing facility at a UPS hub?
The location was meant to join production and shipping in one place. CloudDDM and UPS presented the Worldport campus location and UPS logistics network as a way to move printed parts quickly from the factory to customers. UPS President of Global Logistics and Distribution Mark Wallace said the location would let CloudDDM use the integrated network and “end-of-runway location” to get parts to customers quickly.

That rationale was about logistics as well as printing: making a part on demand could reduce the need to keep some finished parts in storage, while proximity to a shipping hub could help get an order moving after production. In a 2018 account of print-on-demand spare parts, updated February 3, 2025, NIST quoted UPS vice president for corporate strategy Alan Amling saying, “Inventory storage costs are massive.” That observation describes a potential business rationale, not proof that on-demand printing is cheaper in every case.
What did CloudDDM say about shipping speed?
On June 30, 2015, CloudDDM announced that it had begun offering same-day shipping from its factory. That was the company’s claim about its offering at the time, not an independently tested result or a guarantee that every part could be produced and shipped the same day. Shipping the part on the day it was made also did not necessarily mean the customer would receive it that day.

How did the UPS 3D-printing network expand?
In May 2016, UPS described a broader U.S. on-demand network linking the Fast Radius platform—identified in the announcement as formerly CloudDDM—with its Louisville factory and more than 60 UPS Store locations. UPS executive Alan Amling also described store-based 3D printing in 2016 congressional testimony. These are dated accounts of the network and its development; they do not establish current coverage or service availability.
