If you own a Nintendo Switch 2 and are buying either game now, choose its dedicated Switch 2 edition if you want the improvements Square Enix describes. If you still play on the original Switch, buy the original Switch edition: the Switch 2 releases do not run on that hardware. Existing owners should know that there is no planned upgrade pack and saves do not transfer between editions.

Can you play the Switch 2 version on an original Switch?
No. Nintendo identifies the dedicated Switch 2 editions as incompatible with original Switch hardware. If you have not upgraded your console, choose the original Switch release instead. Nintendo lists the Switch 2 games as playable in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, and as single-player.

Will your save transfer, or can you upgrade your Switch copy?
No. Square Enix says save data is incompatible between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions, and says there are no plans to sell an upgrade pack. Treat the Switch 2 edition as a separate purchase with a separate save, rather than a way to continue a partly completed Switch playthrough. The notices appear on Square Enix’s North American product pages for OCTOPATH TRAVELER and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II.
What changes in the Switch 2 editions?
Square Enix describes both as having “improved resolution and frame rate” compared with the original Switch releases. That is a qualitative publisher statement, not a numeric performance guarantee: the official sources cited here do not give resolution targets or measured frame rates. They also do not establish how the original Switch editions perform when played on Switch 2 through backward compatibility, so do not assume that using an old copy delivers the separate Switch 2 editions’ stated improvements.

The Switch 2 editions were released on October 1, 2026, according to Square Enix’s announcement. Nintendo storefront details can vary by region; the cited pages are Nintendo Canada for the first game and Nintendo US for the sequel.
Do you need to play OCTOPATH TRAVELER before OCTOPATH TRAVELER II?
No. The first game follows eight travelers in Orsterra. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II introduces eight new travelers in Solistia, a distinct world. Square Enix describes the sequel as independent of the original and suitable for newcomers, so you can choose based on which setting, cast, or edition interests you rather than treating the first game as a prerequisite.

Is there a bundle with both games?
Square Enix announced individual digital Switch 2 releases and a physical bundle containing both games. That announcement confirms the bundle was planned, not that it is currently in stock in every region or available through a particular retailer. Before buying, check that a listing is for Switch 2, includes both games, and clearly states the physical format.

Square Enix’s July 13, 2026 announcement said the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series had sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. That is a series-wide total, not a sales figure for either individual game. The announcement also set October 1, 2026 as the Switch 2 release date for both titles.
