A document scanner app captures and cleans up a page; OCR recognizes the words in that image or document. They are different jobs, not competing app categories: many scanner apps include OCR, and OCR can also be applied to a scan or PDF created elsewhere. Choose based on what you need to do with the page and what you need to get back.
What does a document scanner app do?
A document scanner app uses a phone camera to capture a paper page and prepare the image for filing or sharing. Depending on the app, that preparation can include detecting page edges, cropping or rotating the image, applying filters, cleaning it up, and combining several pages into one file.
For example, Google Drive’s Android app lets you capture pages, adjust them, add pages, and save as PDF or JPG. Google describes its mobile scans as searchable PDFs. The web version of Drive does not offer this mobile scanning feature. See Google Drive’s Android scanning instructions and its overview of scanning in Drive.
Adobe Scan is another example of a phone-based capture workflow: Adobe describes it as scanning pages and producing searchable PDFs. A connected scanner can also supply pages to a scan-and-OCR workflow; using a phone app does not require buying separate scanning hardware. Adobe’s mobile app FAQ describes Scan, while its paper-to-PDF guide explains scanning and text recognition.

What does OCR do?
OCR stands for optical character recognition. It analyzes text in an image or document and turns recognized characters into text a device or service can work with. Microsoft describes its SharePoint OCR service as extracting printed or handwritten text from images and documents; in that service, extracted text can also be indexed for search. Those details describe Microsoft’s service, not a universal guarantee about every OCR app. Read Microsoft’s OCR overview.
OCR can be applied during scanning or afterward to an existing image or PDF. It does not, by itself, guarantee a faithful reproduction of the page or a fully editable document. The result depends on the app, the file, and how well the text is recognized.

Is OCR the same as scanning?
No. Scanning is the capture and preparation of a page; OCR is text recognition. A scanner app may include OCR, so one workflow can do both. Conversely, an OCR tool may process a scan or PDF made by another app, without capturing the paper itself.
This is why the labels alone are not enough to compare apps. Check the actual workflow: what you can capture or import, how you can adjust pages, and whether the final file contains text you can search, copy, or edit.

Searchable, copyable, and editable are different outcomes
- Searchable PDF: You can find recognized words in the document. The page may still look like a scan rather than a normal text document.
- Copyable text: You can select and copy recognized words from the file in a compatible reader. Microsoft’s Lens support guide describes this for its PDF workflow.
- Editable document: You can change recognized text, and possibly its layout, in an editor. Adobe describes recognizing text to make a PDF searchable and editable; Microsoft’s Lens guide describes applying OCR when saving to Word for text and layout editing.
These are not interchangeable promises. If you need to reuse text, confirm the specific app’s export options and test whether its output works in the editor or reader you use. Adobe’s scan-and-OCR guide and Microsoft’s Lens for Android guide describe their respective workflows.

| What you need | What to check |
|---|---|
| Capture paper with a phone | Camera capture, automatic or manual triggering, page-edge correction, crop and rotate controls, and support for adding pages. |
| Turn an existing image or PDF into text | Whether the app accepts that file type and can recognize text without requiring a new camera scan. |
| Find words in a file later | Whether the export is a searchable PDF or another format whose text can be indexed or searched in your chosen app. |
| Reuse or revise the text | Whether you can select and copy text, or export to an editable format such as Word. Check layout as well as text if formatting matters. |
| Keep a multipage record | Page ordering, adding pages to one document, export format, and where the finished file is saved. |
For occasional receipts, letters, or forms, a mobile scanner may be enough if its export meets your needs. For recurring work that involves reusing text or sending files to an editor, OCR and output formats deserve as much attention as capture controls.

Google Drive: scan and save
Google’s mobile Drive instructions cover scanning with Android and iOS apps. On Android, the documented flow includes camera capture, optional automatic or manual capture, crop and rotate, filters, cleanup, multipage scans, and PDF or JPG output. The cited iOS instructions cover capture and page adjustments but do not establish that every Android export option is identical. Check Google Drive’s iOS instructions for that platform’s steps.

Microsoft Lens: capture and choose a destination
Microsoft’s Lens for Android guide describes document and whiteboard capture modes, image adjustments, and saving to PDF or Microsoft destinations such as OneNote, OneDrive, Word, or PowerPoint. In the described workflow, choosing Word applies OCR to the captured image; PDF output can expose text for searching, highlighting, or copying in a PDF reader. These are product-specific instructions, and they do not establish app-store availability or identical behavior on every device or in every region. See Microsoft’s Lens guide.
OneDrive: recognize text in a scanned PDF
OneDrive’s mobile OCR feature can recognize text in scanned PDFs so it can be searched, highlighted, or copied. Microsoft says the feature is rolling out, so it may not be available to every user yet. See Microsoft’s OneDrive OCR instructions.
Adobe Scan: searchable PDF from a phone scan
Adobe describes Scan on Android and iOS as a way to create searchable PDFs and use OCR. Its scan-and-OCR guide also covers enhancing an image and recognizing text to create a searchable, editable PDF. The mobile app FAQ is about Acrobat 2020, so it supports the described Scan features rather than a current, across-app comparison.
What app descriptions do not tell you
Feature lists establish what a product says it can do; they do not establish which app recognizes text most accurately. The official product documentation cited here does not provide a controlled, comparable accuracy test across apps. It also does not establish a universal winner for handwriting or languages. If recognition quality matters, try representative pages in your target language and conditions, then check the output for errors before relying on it.
