1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a 2011 reworking for Nintendo 3DS; Nintendo’s newly announced Switch 2 edition is a separate release, scheduled for November 5, 2026. “Remake” is a fair everyday label for both, though Nintendo does not use that term in its Switch 2 listing. A remaster usually preserves more of the original game while updating its presentation.
Remake vs. remaster: what the terms mean here
There is no universal technical rule separating a remake from a remaster. As practical labels, a remaster keeps the original game substantially intact while improving its image, sound, or performance for newer hardware. A remake reworks more of the presentation or experience, potentially rebuilding the game rather than simply polishing the original.

Nintendo’s wording illustrates the blur: its official interview search result calls the 3DS project a remake, while Nintendo’s product page describes a “complete graphical overhaul.” For Switch 2, Nintendo says the game is “built from the ground up,” but does not call it a remake. Calling the announced edition a remake is a reasonable description of its stated scope, not Nintendo’s formal classification.
How the three versions compare
| Version | Platform and date | Nintendo-confirmed details | Useful label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Ocarina of Time | Nintendo 64; Nintendo’s UK page also lists historical Wii and Wii U versions | Nintendo describes the original Nintendo 64 game as featuring 3D visuals, a new combat system, and Link’s story opposing Ganondorf. Nintendo UK | Original release |
| Ocarina of Time 3D | Nintendo 3DS; released June 17, 2011 | Glasses-free stereoscopic 3D, a complete graphical overhaul, touch-based inventory, Circle Pad control, and gyro aiming. Nintendo’s interview search result calls the project a remake. Nintendo UK; Nintendo, Iwata Asks | Remake or enhanced remake |
| Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 | Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive; scheduled for November 5, 2026 | Nintendo says it is built from the ground up, with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. Nintendo of America | Remake is a reasonable description of the announced scope |
Is Ocarina of Time 3D a remake or a remaster?
Ocarina of Time 3D is more than the Nintendo 64 game shown on a newer screen. Nintendo documents a graphical overhaul and features built around the 3DS hardware, including stereoscopic 3D, a touch inventory, Circle Pad analogue control, and gyro-based first-person aiming. Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview search result explicitly uses “remaking” for the project.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures

- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
That makes “remake” well supported as a practical label, though “enhanced remake” also conveys that the release reworks the original rather than representing a wholly new Zelda story. Nintendo’s official product page and the interview use different kinds of descriptions, not a binding definition of the terms.
Is the Switch 2 edition a remake?
Nintendo announced that the Nintendo 64 classic would return exclusively for Switch 2 in 2026. Its U.S. store listing gives a scheduled release date of November 5, 2026, which is still in the future as of October 4, 2026. Nintendo’s description says it is “built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system” and lists broad changes to visuals, cutscenes, dialogue, music, controls, and camera movement. Nintendo Singapore’s June 12, 2026 announcement calls it “reborn exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2,” while the U.S. store listing supplies the detailed feature list.

Those announced changes make “remake” a useful shorthand for the edition’s scope. It remains an editorial description: Nintendo’s store listing does not itself call the game a remake. Because the game had not yet released on October 4, 2026, the announced features do not establish its final quality, performance, or how it feels to play.
Which version should you consider?
Start with the hardware you have, then decide which edition’s presentation and controls matter to you. The 3DS version’s particular strengths are stereoscopic 3D, touch-based inventory management, and gyro aiming. The Switch 2 edition is a distinct release with broader audiovisual and control changes announced by Nintendo; it is not another name for Ocarina of Time 3D.

- You want the original Nintendo 64 release: Treat it as the reference version. Nintendo’s UK page also lists historical Wii and Wii U versions, but those listings do not establish that they are currently purchasable in your region.
- You want the 3DS-specific features: Look to Ocarina of Time 3D and its glasses-free 3D display, touch inventory, and gyro aiming.
- You want the announced modern rebuild: The Switch 2 edition is scheduled for November 5, 2026. Nintendo describes it as a Switch 2 exclusive.
Nintendo says purchases through the 3DS-family and Wii U eShops ended March 27, 2023. That applies to new purchases through those eShops; it does not establish whether used physical copies or previously acquired downloads are available to a particular reader. Check your region and the relevant service before assuming an older digital edition can still be bought.

Nintendo has confirmed the Switch 2 edition’s announced features and scheduled release date, but those details are not hands-on evidence. The cited product information does not establish resolution, frame rate, price, or comparative performance, so none should be inferred from “built from the ground up.” Likewise, the historical Wii and Wii U entries on Nintendo’s UK page should not be read as proof of current availability.
