Before using any button guide, identify your edition: the Nintendo 64 original uses Z-targeting, while Ocarina of Time 3D uses configurable L-targeting. On N64, watch the action icon before pressing A; its function changes with Link’s situation. For a first-time player, the reliable basics are to target when helpful, watch for openings, use items and prompts as clues, and practise movement in Kokiri Forest.
Identify your edition before following control instructions
This guide focuses on the Nintendo 64 original, whose official instruction manual documents the controls below. The 3DS release has a different scheme: its manual calls targeting “L-targeting” and lets you choose between Hold and Switch. In Hold mode, the target stays active only while L is held; in Switch mode, targeting continues after you release L. Consult the manual or settings for your specific release rather than assuming N64 button names apply to every version. Nintendo also lists a Nintendo Switch 2 product page for the game, but that is not a source for the N64 control mapping.
The manuals establish these differences in targeting, but do not provide a complete mapping of every later version’s controls. If you are playing a port or another edition, check its own controls before using platform-specific directions.
Learn the N64 action icon before memorizing buttons
On Nintendo 64, A is not assigned to one fixed action. Look at the on-screen action icon: depending on the situation, A may make Link speak, check something, open something, or perform another available interaction. The manual says unavailable actions appear in black and white or are not displayed. Use the prompt as your immediate instruction instead of pressing A repeatedly or trying to memorize every context.

The N64 manual’s basic map is:
- Control Stick: Move Link. How far you tilt it determines whether he walks or runs.
- A: Perform the action shown by the context-sensitive icon.
- B: Use the sword.
- R: Raise the shield.
- C buttons: Use equipped items.
- Z: Target or look forward.
- START: Open the subscreen.
Movement has context too. The manual says Link can automatically jump or climb when moving toward gaps or uneven ground, but moving from too far away can prevent the action. At the water’s surface, holding A makes him dive; his diving depth increases as the adventure progresses.
Use targeting to manage a fight, not just to aim
In the N64 edition, Z-targeting is useful in one-on-one encounters because it helps keep an enemy in view, manage distance, and make attacks more accurate. It can also focus on certain objects and people. When targeting an eligible enemy or object, Navi may offer advice. Treat targeting as help with attention and positioning, not as a guarantee that every encounter becomes easy.

A practical combat rhythm is to target, watch what the opponent does, move or defend, then attack when an opening appears. This is a useful way to apply the documented controls, not a required combo for every enemy.
Choose an attack for the opening
The N64 manual documents vertical and horizontal sword swings, a stab, and a charged spin swing. It also describes a three-hit sequence in which the third swing can be wider when timed correctly. These are options to learn as situations arise, not a sequence you must force against every opponent.

- Charged spin swing: Its power depends on charge duration and it consumes magic.
- Roll attack: The manual notes that rolling can also help avoid damage.
Defend and reposition
Raise the shield with R; on N64, the Control Stick moves it. Back flips and side jumps are documented dodges. If standing still leaves Link exposed, reposition rather than trading hits; look for a safer moment to strike.
Explore by reading prompts and testing what you find
Nintendo describes Hyrule Field as a gateway to towns and varied regions, and describes dungeons as combinations of puzzles, enemies, treasures, and environmental obstacles. Its game description also explains that items help overcome obstacles. A useful beginner habit, inferred from those descriptions, is to notice the action prompt, talk to people, inspect unusual objects, and try a newly acquired item when a path or puzzle seems blocked.

Abilities can matter beyond combat: Nintendo says learned ocarina songs can open paths and affect the time of day. You do not need a complete solution list to benefit from the idea—remember new abilities and pay attention when the environment gives you a reason to try them.

Nintendo’s N64 manual puts the advice plainly: “The quickest way to finish the game is to effectively control Link in every situation.” It immediately adds: “Try practicing maneuvers at the beginning of the game, in Kokiri Forest.” Treat that early area as a low-pressure place to get comfortable with movement, the action icon, targeting, shielding, and dodging before expecting yourself to execute them smoothly in a fight.
