The safest way to back up an Obsidian vault is to copy its entire folder—including the hidden .obsidian folder—to a separate destination, then periodically open that copy as a separate vault to verify it. Obsidian stores notes as ordinary Markdown files, so an external drive, USB drive, cloud backup, NAS, operating-system backup, or version-control workflow can protect the data. Obsidian’s official warning is unambiguous: "Syncing is not a backup." Sync is useful for keeping devices aligned and recovering individual file versions, but a dedicated one-way backup is what protects against device loss, broad deletion, corruption, or an unwanted change propagating everywhere.

What exactly is an Obsidian vault, and what must you back up?

An Obsidian vault is a normal folder on your computer, not a proprietary database container. Your notes are Markdown-formatted plain-text files; images, PDFs, audio, and other attachments sit in the same folder tree. The vault also contains a hidden .obsidian folder with vault-specific settings such as themes, hotkeys, and community-plugin configuration.

That makes the complete backup unit the whole vault folder. Copying only visible Markdown files protects note text but leaves behind attachments, embedded files, and the settings that make the vault look and behave the way you configured it. Include hidden files when your file manager offers a choice, and do not exclude .obsidian unless you deliberately want a clean, settings-free copy.

Is Obsidian Sync a backup?

No. Obsidian Help states that “Syncing is not a backup.” Sync is designed to propagate changes between connected devices. If a note is accidentally deleted or corrupted and that change synchronizes, the same problem can reach every synchronized copy. A real backup is a separate, preferably one-way copy that does not automatically mirror every deletion or edit.

Sync still has an important recovery role. Its version history can restore earlier versions of notes and attachments, deleted files, and vault-configuration files. Treat those features as targeted recovery, not as your only disaster-recovery plan. Keep at least one independent copy on a different device or service.

How do I find the folder for my active vault?

Use Obsidian’s vault switcher to identify the folder associated with the vault you currently use. The switcher lists the vaults Obsidian knows about and provides access to their folder locations. You can also locate the folder through your operating system’s file manager by searching for a distinctive note filename and then confirming that the surrounding folder contains your other notes and attachments.

  • Confirm that you have selected the active vault, not an older copy or an empty test vault.
  • Look for the .obsidian directory. It may be hidden by your operating system.
  • Check the folder’s size and recent-modification dates so you do not copy a stale location.
  • If you use multiple vaults, identify each one separately; Obsidian does not combine them into a single backup automatically.

How do I make a complete backup of an Obsidian vault?

Use this workflow whenever you create a manual copy or configure a backup job. Close Obsidian first, or otherwise ensure that no files are changing while the copy is made. A static source folder reduces the chance of capturing an inconsistent set of files while a note or plugin is writing data.

  1. Identify the source folder. Use the vault switcher or file manager steps above and verify the folder contains the notes and attachments you expect.
  2. Close Obsidian. Exit the application before copying. If another synchronization or automation tool is also writing to the folder, pause it until the copy finishes.
  3. Choose a separate destination. Use an external hard drive, USB drive, cloud-backup location, NAS, operating-system backup destination, or a version-control repository. The destination should not be the same folder or merely another path on the same failing disk.
  4. Copy the entire folder. Preserve the folder hierarchy, file names, attachments, and the hidden .obsidian directory. Do not copy just the files currently visible in Obsidian’s file pane.
  5. Give the copy a useful identity. A folder name that includes the vault name and date makes it easier to distinguish a known-good snapshot from a later copy. If your backup software keeps versions automatically, let it retain historical snapshots rather than only the newest mirror.
  6. Safely disconnect removable media. Eject an external or USB drive through the operating system before unplugging it. This reduces the risk of incomplete writes.
  7. Verify a restoration copy. Open the backup folder as a new, separate vault and inspect several notes, attachments, internal links, themes, and plugins. Never use the live vault as the test target and never overwrite it during this check.

Keep at least one copy physically or logically separate from the computer running Obsidian. A separate copy limits the damage from a failed internal drive, theft, ransomware, or an accidental deletion that propagates through an always-connected mirror.

Which backup method fits an Obsidian vault?

No method is best for every vault. Choose by the coverage you need, how far back you may have to recover, how much automation you want, and whether your copies remain isolated from changes in the live vault.

Method What it covers History and automation Important trade-off
External hard drive Whole vault, including attachments and .obsidian Manual copies or scheduled backup software; historical versions depend on the software Fast local recovery, but the drive can fail, be lost, or be damaged
USB flash drive Whole vault for a quick portable copy Usually manual; version history is not automatic Convenient for small vaults, but removable media is easy to lose or damage
Cloud backup Whole vault when the provider backs up the folder Often scheduled or continuous, with provider-dependent version retention Remote access and off-site resilience require trust in the provider, account security, and its recovery terms
NAS Whole vault on network storage; some systems add snapshots or redundancy Can be automated; recovery features depend on the NAS configuration More setup and maintenance, but multiple drives and additional recovery mechanisms can improve resilience
Operating-system backup Whole vault if the vault folder is included in the backup set Usually scheduled with system-level version history Convenient when already configured, but confirm that hidden files and the vault location are included
Git or a community backup plugin Text notes and any files you explicitly commit or copy Detailed change history; automation depends on the workflow Requires setup, commits, and maintenance; an unpushed repository on the same computer is not an off-device backup
Obsidian Sync Synced notes, attachments, and selected vault configuration across devices Automatic synchronization plus documented version history It is synchronization and targeted recovery, not an independent one-way backup

When is an external hard drive the practical choice?

An external hard drive is a direct physical backup destination for a complete vault. Obsidian’s backup guidance specifically discusses external hard drives for data storage and computer backups. It is a good fit when you want a large local copy that can be disconnected after the backup completes. Keep the drive in a different location when possible, and maintain more than one copy if the vault is important because any single drive can break or disappear.

How should I use a USB flash drive?

A USB drive is useful for a quick copy or a small vault. Insert it, confirm that the operating system has mounted it, copy the entire vault folder, safely unmount the drive, and remove it. Do not treat one USB stick as your only protection: removable media can be lost, damaged, or overwritten easily.

What should I know about cloud backup?

Cloud backup can add an off-site copy and make recovery possible when the original computer is unavailable. Select a service that can back up the actual vault folder rather than only selected documents, and review its account-security, encryption, retention, and deletion behavior. Obsidian does not endorse a particular cloud provider on its backup guidance, so the provider’s own terms determine how long deleted or previous versions remain available.

Is a NAS suitable for an Obsidian vault?

A NAS is an advanced option for people comfortable configuring network storage. A NAS may use multiple drives and additional recovery mechanisms, but redundancy is not the same as a separate backup: a mistaken deletion can still be synchronized to every live share. Configure snapshots or a second destination when the NAS software supports them, and periodically confirm that the vault can be restored from the NAS.

Can Git or a community plugin replace a folder backup?

Git can record detailed revisions, and Obsidian documents Git-based workflows as well as community plugins for Git and local backups. These approaches demand more setup and maintenance than copying a folder, and Obsidian cannot officially endorse a particular community plugin. A repository that remains only on the computer containing the live vault does not protect against that computer’s failure; push or replicate it to a separate destination and include attachments if they matter to your recovery plan.

How do I restore an entire vault from a folder backup?

A folder backup is the most general recovery path because it can restore notes, attachments, and vault configuration together. Restore to a safe location first, then open the restored folder as a separate vault before considering any replacement of the original.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Protect the original. If the original vault still exists, do not delete or overwrite it. Rename neither folder until you have inspected the restored copy.
  2. Prepare the backup. Connect the external drive, mount the NAS share, or download the cloud snapshot. Extract an archive to a normal folder if the backup is compressed.
  3. Copy to a working location. Place the restored folder on a local disk or another location where Obsidian can read and write it. Keep the backup source untouched.
  4. Open it as a vault. In Obsidian’s vault switcher, choose the option to open an existing folder as a vault and select the restored folder. Give it a temporary name if the switcher asks for one.
  5. Inspect representative content. Open several recent and older notes, follow internal links, view images and other attachments, and check that the expected folder structure is present.
  6. Check configuration. Confirm themes, hotkeys, and community plugins. A complete copy should include .obsidian; if that directory was intentionally omitted, the notes can still open but the vault-specific configuration will not be restored.
  7. Decide whether to replace the original. Only after the separate copy looks correct should you make it the working vault. Keep the original or an additional backup until you are confident that no newer files need to be recovered.

Because Obsidian uses ordinary files, you can also inspect a restored vault with a file manager or text editor before opening it. That is useful when Obsidian itself cannot start or when you need to identify which snapshot contains a missing note.

How do I restore one note, attachment, or deleted file with Obsidian Sync?

Sync’s version history is designed for targeted recovery when the rest of the vault is still correct. The exact retention period depends on the plan and file type.

Sync history item Documented retention
Standard-plan note versions One month
Plus-plan note versions Twelve months
Older attachment versions Two weeks

These windows are the operational figures listed by Obsidian Help; the page does not display a publication year. They are retention limits for Sync history, not a guarantee that an independent backup is unnecessary.

Restore an earlier version of an existing file

  1. Open the note or attachment in Obsidian.
  2. Open that file’s version-history view.
  3. Select the dated version you want and review its contents.
  4. Choose Restore to replace the current file with the selected version.

Review the restored content before making further edits. If you need the current version as well, save a copy of it outside the vault before restoring the older one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore a deleted or renamed file

  1. Open Settings → Sync → Deleted files.
  2. Find the deleted or renamed file and select the version to recover.
  3. Choose Restore. Obsidian also provides a bulk-restore option when you need to recover multiple deleted notes.

After restoration, check the file’s location and links. A restored file may return under its previous name or path, so confirm that it appears where you expect before editing it.

How do I restore themes, hotkeys, and plugins?

The vault’s .obsidian folder stores vault-level preferences, including themes, hotkeys, and community-plugin configuration. Restoring the whole folder therefore restores more than note text. Make sure your backup process copied hidden directories and did not filter out plugin files.

Sync provides a separate history for configuration files. Use Settings → Sync → Vault configuration sync → Settings version history, select the settings file you need, and choose Restore. Obsidian notes that a reload or restart may be required before the restored setting takes effect.

What can Obsidian’s File recovery feature do?

File recovery provides local version history when enabled. It can help recover recently edited text on the same device, but its recovery information is stored locally and is limited by that device. It does not protect against a failed or stolen computer, and it cannot substitute for a separate copy of the vault.

Use File recovery as a short-term safety net for an accidental edit. Use an external, cloud, NAS, operating-system, or version-control backup for device loss, broad accidental deletion, corruption, or a longer recovery window.

How do I recover a deleted note when Sync is unavailable?

Start with the most recent independent copy that predates the deletion. Open that backup as a separate vault, locate the missing Markdown file, and copy only the file you need into a working copy of the live vault. Copy any associated attachment files as well if the note embeds them.

  • External or USB copy: Browse dated folders or snapshots and retrieve the note from the appropriate copy.
  • Cloud or operating-system backup: Use the provider’s or operating system’s version browser to restore the individual file when supported, rather than replacing the entire vault unnecessarily.
  • Git repository: Find the commit that still contains the note, export the file, and copy it back after checking for a newer version in the live vault.
  • File recovery: Use it only if the note was recently edited on that device and the feature had been enabled before the loss.

If no independent copy and no local recovery history contains the file, Obsidian has no proprietary database from which to reconstruct it; the plain-text file itself must exist in one of your available copies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I prevent a backup from making recovery worse?

Most backup failures come from copying the wrong folder, allowing a deletion to propagate everywhere, or overwriting the only good snapshot. Use this checklist when designing or reviewing your routine:

  • Keep the live vault and at least one backup on different physical storage.
  • Retain historical versions or dated snapshots instead of maintaining only a single mirror.
  • Disconnect a removable backup after it finishes so a later mistake cannot immediately alter it.
  • Include hidden files, especially .obsidian, when configuration matters.
  • Do not overwrite the original vault during a restoration check.
  • Open a restored copy periodically and inspect notes, attachments, links, and settings.
  • Record which vault each backup represents if you maintain multiple vaults.
  • Protect cloud and Sync accounts with strong account security, and keep any encryption credentials in a secure password manager.

What should a practical Obsidian backup routine look like?

For most people, combine an automated or scheduled backup with an occasionally disconnected copy. Let your operating-system backup, cloud backup, NAS, or version-control workflow create regular history, then periodically copy the complete vault to an external drive or USB device and store that copy separately. This combination gives you convenient recent versions and a backup that is less exposed to an always-on synchronization error.

Use Obsidian Sync when you need the same vault on multiple devices and want file-level version history. Keep the independent folder backup anyway, because Sync is not designed to be the one-way protection described above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I restore an Obsidian vault on a different computer or operating system?

Yes. The notes are Markdown files in a normal folder, so you can copy the vault to the other computer and open that folder as an existing vault. Reinstall or update any plugins that are unavailable on the new system, and check paths for attachments or external files that live outside the vault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if I lose the password for an end-to-end encrypted Sync vault?

Obsidian cannot recover the encryption password for an end-to-end encrypted remote vault. Without it, the encrypted remote data may be unusable, so store the password securely and keep an independent, readable vault backup.

Can File recovery protect my vault if my laptop is stolen?

No. File recovery data is local to the device where it was created. A separate drive, cloud destination, NAS, or other off-device copy is required for theft, loss, or catastrophic hardware failure.

Is a local Git repository enough to protect an Obsidian vault?

Only if the repository is replicated somewhere separate from the computer and contains every file you need, including attachments. A repository that never leaves the original disk provides history but not protection from that disk’s loss.
