If your OBS stream seems capped at 30 frames per second, first check Settings > Video > Common FPS Value. Set it to 60 if that is your target, then verify that your source can supply 60 fps, OBS can render and encode it, and YouTube’s Live Control Room detects a 60-fps input. A 30-fps option in a viewer’s playback menu alone does not prove OBS sent only 30 fps.

1. Set OBS’s output frame rate deliberately

In OBS, open Settings > Video and inspect Common FPS Value. This controls the desired output frame rate; it does not automatically follow a game, camera, or capture source. OBS says this value should match the desired output FPS, with 30 and 60 as examples. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Also check Output (Scaled) Resolution. OBS’s canvas resolution and scaled output resolution are separate settings; the scaled output is what the stream sends. If you want 60 fps, select it here and test a representative scene rather than assuming another setting has changed the stream output.

2. Confirm the source and capture chain can provide 60 fps

Check the frame-rate settings and capabilities of the actual input path: a camera, capture source, game-capture path, or other source. A source configured for 30 fps cannot supply 60 distinct frames per second just because OBS’s output is set to 60. Look for a 30-fps setting or limit in the source or capture path, then compare it with OBS’s selected output rate.

Which device or path is limiting a particular stream depends on its hardware, software, and configuration. Check the specifications and settings for your own source rather than assuming a particular camera or capture card is required.

3. Check whether OBS can render and encode the scene

Rendering scenes uses GPU resources, and OBS identifies GPU overload or a GPU bottleneck as a common reason it cannot keep up. Higher output resolution and frame rate both add workload. Test a scene with typical motion and overlays, and inspect OBS’s rendering and encoding performance indicators while it runs.

  • If rendering is the problem, simplify the scene or reduce the output resolution or frame rate.
  • If encoding is the problem, consider a hardware encoder only if it is supported by your operating system, hardware, and drivers and is appropriate for the diagnosed load. OBS documents platform and compatibility considerations in its Hardware Encoding guide.
  • If the system still cannot sustain 60 fps, use 30 fps for a stable stream. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing the frame rate when 60 is not working; that is a system-performance adjustment, not a YouTube 30-fps cap.

4. Verify the incoming stream in YouTube Live Control Room

Test before an event and check stream health, messages, and the detected incoming resolution and frame rate in Live Control Room. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate; a custom stream key can enable manual stream-resolution selection. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream keys and test and stream controls.

Compare YouTube’s detected input with OBS’s output settings. If YouTube detects 60 fps, but a viewer sees only a 30-fps playback option, investigate playback renditions rather than assuming the encoder sent 30. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates, so viewer playback choices are not the same thing as the original input. See OBS’s guide to transcodes and transcoding.

5. Check the encoder’s protocol settings

For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube supports incoming video at up to 60 fps. That is a platform ceiling, not a guarantee that every OBS system, source, codec, resolution, or network can deliver 60 reliably. YouTube’s live encoder settings give these settings and recommendations:

  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
  • Bitrate encoding: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Recommended advanced settings: progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
  • SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.

Use settings compatible with the codec and output you selected. Bitrate affects the data rate and quality of the incoming stream; it does not switch OBS from 30 to 60 fps. YouTube’s H.264 live-ingestion bitrate recommendations include the following values (in Mbps):

Troubleshooting: match the symptom to the check

  • OBS is set to 30: In Settings > Video > Common FPS Value, select the intended rate and test again.
  • OBS is set to 60, but YouTube detects 30: Check whether the source or capture path is configured or limited to 30 fps, and confirm the OBS output and stream settings. Test with representative motion and inspect YouTube’s detected input and health messages.
  • OBS or the stream cannot sustain 60: Check rendering and encoding performance. Simplify the scene or reduce resolution or frame rate; a stable 30-fps output is preferable to an unstable 60-fps target.
  • YouTube detects 60, but viewers see 30: Do not treat the playback menu as proof of the input rate. YouTube creates multiple playback renditions; use Live Control Room’s detected input properties to diagnose what OBS sent.
  • Changing bitrate has no effect on FPS: That is expected. Set frame rate in OBS’s Video settings, and use bitrate, CBR, and keyframe settings for the compatible stream configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than stream a live camera or gameplay feed, StreamNeo runs the playback from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service costs $9.99 per month.
