That does not prove BSNL is at fault. First compare wired and Wi-Fi performance, reduce the bitrate to a level your connection can sustain, and check OBS logs alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages. Jitter can add useful context, but there is no established universal jitter threshold that predicts whether an OBS stream will drop frames.
What OBS network dropped frames mean
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. If enough frames are lost, the stream may disconnect. The symptom alone does not identify whether the cause is the ISP, Wi-Fi, local software, network hardware, routing, or an overly high bitrate. See the OBS Project connection troubleshooting guide.
First make sure you are looking at network dropped frames, rather than rendering lag or encoding lag. Those indicate different problems; do not diagnose every OBS performance warning as upload jitter or an ISP fault. Note the time the drops began, the percentage shown in OBS, and the configured stream bitrate.
Check the connection before blaming BSNL
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with Ethernet and repeat a private test. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you need a cable to run this comparison, a Cat 6 cable is one option; the test isolates the wireless link, not the quality of the BSNL service beyond the router. A wired result that improves points toward the local Wi-Fi link, but does not by itself prove the cause.

Measure sustained upload, not just a headline speed
Run an upload speed test, then observe whether upload remains stable during a representative stream test. A single speed-test result is only a snapshot; repeat tests at comparable times if the issue comes and goes. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and selecting a quality appropriate to the connection. Its encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Lower the bitrate and retest
OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed when setting the video bitrate. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: stable capacity and YouTube’s applicable bitrate recommendations both matter. Reduce the OBS video bitrate until it is comfortably within the upload capacity you can sustain, then retest using the same resolution, frame rate, content, and YouTube ingest setup. If network drops stop at a lower bitrate, the original rate was likely too demanding for the conditions at the time; it does not establish why capacity was insufficient.

Match YouTube encoder settings to stable capacity
YouTube’s published recommendations below are platform targets, not proof that your line can sustain them. Choose the row for the codec and frame rate in use, then keep the chosen rate within stable upload capacity. YouTube’s published figures can change, so consult its encoder page when configuring a stream.
| Codec | 1080p at 30 fps | 1080p at 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube currently lists RTMP and RTMPS protocols, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the settings supported by your encoder and YouTube setup; do not raise bitrate to meet a platform recommendation if your connection cannot carry it reliably.

- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Run a representative test and monitor stream health
- Prepare a private test stream. Use the planned resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and ingest setup.
- Include realistic movement and sound. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the actual event; a static screen may not represent the real stream.
- Watch OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Record when network dropped frames begin, their percentage, the bitrate, and any YouTube health messages.
- Repeat one change at a time. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, then compare the current bitrate with a lower one. Keeping other settings and the destination the same makes the result easier to interpret.
Check local software and network configuration
If drops continue over Ethernet at a reduced bitrate, isolate potential local contributors before changing several settings at once:
- Temporarily test without a VPN, if one is in use.
- Check whether security software or network-priority, optimizer, or bundled network utilities are interfering with OBS traffic.
- Check for outdated network drivers and connectivity problems with the modem or router. OBS identifies drivers, software, and faulty network hardware as possible contributors; if hardware may be faulty, contact your ISP rather than buying a router before diagnosis.
- In OBS, use the default Bind to IP setting unless you have a specific reason to change it. OBS suggests trying IPv4-only as a diagnostic change; if it does not help, return to IPv4 and IPv6.
- OBS’s network optimizations and TCP pacing options are Windows-only. Do not expect those options on other operating systems.
OBS also offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). This can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and may reduce video quality. Treat it as a continuity workaround, not a diagnosis.

What BSNL and jitter figures can—and cannot—tell you
Jitter, packet loss, and latency can help describe a connection, but neither the cited OBS nor YouTube guidance establishes a universal jitter cutoff for predicting OBS-to-YouTube dropped frames. Interpret those readings alongside sustained upload throughput, OBS’s network-dropped-frame counter, and YouTube’s stream-health information.
TRAI’s 2025 independent drive-test reports show variation among sampled BSNL mobile-network locations, not a representative measure of an individual fixed-broadband line. The Kolkata report’s overall data-performance summary reports 74.75 ms jitter and 18.56% packet loss for BSNL, while a separate sampled site reports 5.54 ms jitter and 3.60% packet loss (TRAI Kolkata report). In the Uttar Pradesh East report, the BSNL sample at Government Polytechnic Unnao recorded 5.27 Mbps average upload throughput, 7.03 ms jitter, and 0.30% packet loss. At Kanpur Airport, the report lists 10.39 Mbps upload throughput and 100% packet loss, alongside a note that some YouTube and ping tests failed (TRAI Uttar Pradesh East report).

Those are location-specific mobile samples from the reports, not current tests of your BSNL broadband connection. They cannot establish that BSNL fixed broadband is inherently unstable, or explain drops on your line. Your wired, time-stamped measurements and OBS log are more relevant to your case.
When to contact BSNL, and what to send
If the problem persists after testing Ethernet, lowering bitrate, and checking local software and settings, give BSNL evidence that helps narrow down the fault. OBS recommends contacting the ISP with details if its troubleshooting steps do not resolve connection issues.
- Exact timestamps and duration of each episode.
- The OBS log and the network-dropped-frame percentage observed.
- Your configured bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Upload measurements taken during or near the problem, with the test time recorded.
- Whether the result changed between Wi-Fi and Ethernet or after lowering bitrate.
- Whether a different ingest server or service changed the outcome; this is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix.
