If OBS disconnects exactly when your computer goes to sleep, change the computer’s sleep timeout. Turning off the display is normally harmless; putting the computer itself into sleep removes it from its normal working state, so OBS cannot keep sending video to YouTube. This is a direct application of how Windows and macOS suspend computer activity, rather than a claim from a specific OBS-and-YouTube lab test.

Keep the machine awake for the entire broadcast, preferably while connected to mains power. Then separate sleep-related failures from genuine network dropouts: if the computer remains awake when the stream stops, troubleshoot the connection instead.

What to change first

Change the computer sleep timeout for the power condition used during the broadcast. Do not confuse it with the display timeout. A screen can turn off while the operating system continues running OBS; computer sleep suspends normal processing and network activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a long stream, set sleep to a duration longer than the planned broadcast or disable sleep while plugged in.
  • Leave the display-off timeout unchanged if you want the screen dark while OBS keeps working.
  • Apply the setting to the plugged-in profile you will actually use. A different battery profile can still put a laptop to sleep.
  • Check whether a company policy, school policy, or manufacturer utility overrides the setting.

After changing the setting, run a private or unlisted test while the computer is plugged in. Confirm that the display can turn off without the stream ending, then verify that the computer itself does not enter sleep.

Windows 11: keep the computer awake

Open the current power controls

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Power & battery.
  3. Expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
  4. Find the sleep setting for the power condition you will use, especially the plugged-in option.
  5. Choose a timeout that covers the whole broadcast or select the available option that prevents sleep while plugged in.

Windows presents screen and sleep controls separately. You can therefore allow the screen to turn off after a few minutes while keeping the computer awake for OBS. If your edition shows additional hibernation controls, make sure hibernation will not occur during the stream either; hibernation is also incompatible with continuous OBS transmission.

Use the correct power condition

A laptop may have one timeout for battery operation and another for AC power. If you test while plugged in but later stream on battery, the battery timeout can still trigger sleep. For a reliable long broadcast, use AC power and set the AC sleep timeout deliberately. Keeping a computer awake consumes power, so do not disable sleep globally unless that is what you intend.

When the option is missing or keeps reverting

Managed Windows computers can hide or enforce power settings. Manufacturer control panels and battery-management utilities can also apply their own rules. If the value returns to its previous setting, check those management tools or ask the device administrator. Windows 10 and customized installations may show a different path, so use the Settings search for “sleep” or “screen, sleep, and hibernate” if the Windows 11 wording is not present.

Mac laptop: prevent sleep on the power adapter

Enable the adapter-specific setting

  1. Open System Settings and go to Battery.
  2. Open the options for the Power Adapter.
  3. Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.
  4. Connect the Mac to its power adapter before starting the stream.

This setting is designed for the case where the display turns off but the Mac must continue working. The display can therefore be dark while OBS remains active. Apple warns that preventing sleep can increase power consumption; use it for the broadcast window rather than assuming it is desirable at all times.

Check battery behavior separately

The power-adapter option does not necessarily change what happens on battery. If the Mac is unplugged, review the battery sleep behavior and either keep the machine connected or choose a battery timeout long enough for the session. Test the exact arrangement you will use, including whether the lid is open or closed and whether any manufacturer or organization policy is applied.

Display off versus computer sleep

Behavior What happens Effect on OBS What to do
Display turns off The panel powers down, but the operating system continues running. OBS can normally continue encoding and sending the stream. Leave this timeout as desired for privacy or lower display power.
Computer enters sleep Normal processing and network activity are suspended. OBS cannot keep transmitting during the sleep period. Extend or disable sleep for the relevant plugged-in profile.
Computer hibernates The working state is saved and active processing stops. The live sender is not running. Prevent hibernation during the broadcast window.

Because the sleep diagnosis follows from operating-system power-state behavior, a stream that stops at the exact sleep time should be treated as a power configuration problem first. A stream that stops while the computer remains awake needs a different investigation.

OBS settings that help after a network dropout

Use automatic reconnect as recovery, not as a sleep workaround

In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Network and review the automatic reconnect controls provided by your version. Reconnect can help OBS recover from a brief interruption after the computer is awake again or after a transient network failure. It cannot make OBS transmit while the operating system is asleep, so enabling it does not replace the sleep-timeout change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before a real broadcast, test the complete sequence: start the stream, allow the display to turn off, keep the computer awake, and observe whether OBS remains connected. If you intentionally interrupt the network, verify how your OBS version reports the disconnect and recovery. Do not assume that a successful reconnect test proves sleep is safe.

Do not start with dynamic bitrate for a sleep failure

OBS documents dynamic bitrate as a fallback that can reduce stream quality when available bandwidth changes. It does not address a computer that has entered sleep, and it does not repair an unstable driver, router, or internet path. Use it only after confirming that the machine stays awake and that the problem is genuinely variable network capacity.

Keep video settings separate from power diagnosis

Resolution, frame rate, encoder load, bitrate, keyframe interval, and the YouTube stream key affect stream compatibility and bandwidth, but none of them keeps a sleeping computer active. When isolating this fault, record your normal OBS output settings and change only the power behavior first. That prevents an unrelated quality or encoder change from obscuring the cause.

Troubleshooting when the stream still disconnects

1. Confirm the computer’s power state

  • Look for a sleep or wake event at the timestamp shown by OBS or YouTube.
  • Check whether the display merely went dark or whether the computer required a key press, mouse movement, or login to resume.
  • Repeat a short test while plugged in with sleep disabled for that power profile.

If the disconnect disappears, the sleep timeout was the cause. Keep the display timeout independent if you want a dark screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Test the network while the machine stays awake

If the computer never slept, open OBS’s network settings and review its documented troubleshooting options. OBS identifies unstable Wi-Fi, VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-prioritization software, drivers, and network hardware as possible causes of intermittent connection problems.

3. Compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet

For a Wi-Fi stream that drops while the computer remains awake, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking where Wi-Fi is unstable. Ethernet is a diagnostic and reliability measure; it is not a fix for a computer that is entering sleep.

4. Remove interference one variable at a time

Temporarily test without a VPN or traffic-shaping utility, and check whether security software is filtering OBS. Verify network and graphics drivers are current enough for your operating system. Make one change per test so you can identify the cause rather than masking it.

5. Escalate hardware and ISP checks only after diagnosis

Routers, network cables, network adapters, and the internet service itself can fail, but replacing hardware without confirming the failure path is expensive guesswork. If a wired test and software checks do not resolve the dropout, contact your internet service provider and provide the timestamps and OBS logs they request.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for prerecorded streams

Keeping OBS awake solves an availability problem, not a rights or policy problem. Before looping a recording, confirm that you own the video and audio or have permission to use them on YouTube. A stream can remain technically connected while a copyright claim, block, or other enforcement action affects its availability.

Review YouTube’s current rules for live content, reused content, and any music, footage, or third-party material in your playlist. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and remove material whose rights do not cover public or continuous streaming. These checks apply whether the stream is sent by local OBS or by a cloud service.

Pre-stream checklist

  • Computer connected to reliable AC power.
  • Sleep timeout extended or disabled for the active plugged-in profile.
  • Display-off timeout set independently if desired.
  • Hibernation and lid-close behavior checked on a laptop.
  • OBS automatic reconnect reviewed under Settings > Advanced > Network.
  • VPN, security, traffic-prioritization software, and drivers tested for interference.
  • Ethernet tested if Wi-Fi has shown instability.
  • YouTube stream key and privacy setting verified before going public.
  • Copyright and reused-content rights checked for every prerecorded item.
  • Short test completed in the same power and network conditions as the real broadcast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off only the monitor stop an OBS stream?

Not usually. Display-off and computer sleep are separate controls; the risk is the operating system entering sleep, not the panel becoming dark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the stream stop even though OBS has automatic reconnect enabled?

Reconnect is recovery behavior for an interruption. It does not keep OBS transmitting while the computer is suspended.

Should I disable sleep on battery as well as AC power?

Only if you truly intend to stream on battery. For long sessions, AC power is the more predictable setup, while battery sleep settings should remain deliberate.

Does a cloud service remove YouTube copyright obligations?

No. You still need rights to every uploaded video and audio track, regardless of whether OBS or a cloud service sends the stream.
