A stream dropping every few hours does not, by itself, point to a scheduled OBS timeout or an expiring stream key. The first step is to capture what OBS and YouTube report at the exact time it happens, then test whether the failure is in the encoder, your local network, the route to YouTube, or YouTube’s ingest status.
What a recurring disconnect does—and does not—tell you
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. OBS connects directly to the streaming service; OBS does not provide streaming servers in that path. An unstable connection, or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate, can cause dropped frames, and enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream.
This identifies the failure class, not the specific fault in your setup. A few hours between failures is a reason to record timestamps and compare status and logs—not proof of a timer, hardware defect, or recurring stream-key expiry. Also distinguish your broadcast disconnecting from viewers experiencing buffering: they are different symptoms and need different diagnosis.
Capture evidence at the next disconnect
- Write down the exact time. Note whether OBS reports a disconnect, whether the dropped-frame counter rose beforehand, and whether YouTube ended or paused the live event. Avoid restarting immediately if you can first capture the relevant status and log details.
- Inspect YouTube Studio. Open the live event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check Stream health and any timestamped status or error messages. YouTube says stream status includes specific error messages with instructions; its error reference also says messages are timestamped. Use the message at the time of failure rather than guessing from the interval.
- Keep the OBS log. Record the log from the session that failed. Include the time, whether OBS was still encoding, the dropped-frame count, and any connection error. These details help distinguish an encoder problem from a connection interruption.
- Check what viewers saw separately. If OBS and YouTube show a healthy live stream but viewers report buffering, investigate playback and viewer-side connectivity rather than assuming the encoder disconnected.
Follow the evidence to the likely failure layer
If YouTube shows a specific error
Follow the instruction associated with that timestamped Live Control Room message. For an encoder start error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guide tells third-party encoder users to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. That instruction is for a start error; do not treat a key refresh as a universal fix for a stream that ran for hours before disconnecting.

If the encoder output or computer looks unhealthy
YouTube recommends checking the encoder version, the picture and sound in the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and a local archive. If the encoder’s output looks healthy but the stream still has trouble, YouTube says there may be an outbound internet connection issue. A local recording can help establish whether the encoder continued producing usable audio and video around the failure.
If OBS reports dropped frames or connection instability
Prioritize the connection and ingest path. OBS recommends testing another ingest server where available, reducing video bitrate, and trying another streaming service as an isolation test. A different service working reliably can point toward a YouTube-specific path or ingest issue; it does not, on its own, prove which part of that path is at fault.

Test bitrate, ingest, and your local network
Set a bitrate the connection can sustain
OBS’s 2024 connection guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed when setting bitrate. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: upload capacity can vary, other devices and applications can consume bandwidth, and the right setting also depends on YouTube’s limits and your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Lower the video bitrate for a controlled test and see whether the dropped frames stop. If the stream becomes stable only at lower quality, congestion or insufficient sustained upload capacity remains a possibility.
YouTube’s encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. It recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds; this is a configuration reference, not evidence that keyframe timing caused a disconnect after several hours. Check the applicable YouTube encoder settings for your actual output rather than applying one bitrate number to every stream.

Separate Wi-Fi and wired-network behavior
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, repeat the test over Ethernet if possible. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Change one variable at a time and note whether the failure recurs; replacing a cable or router before this test is not justified by the timing pattern alone.
Check software and network settings methodically
- Temporarily test whether a VPN or security software is interfering. If disabling one changes the result, restore your protection and configure an OBS exception rather than leaving security software off.
- Check whether network-optimization or traffic-prioritization software is affecting the connection, and make sure network drivers are not outdated or malfunctioning.
- Restart modem and router equipment as a basic connectivity check, then record whether that changes the failure pattern.
- On Windows, OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as optional tests that some users report help. Enabling them adds diagnostic detail to the log; availability and labels may vary by OBS version.
- Leave “Bind to IP” at “Default” unless you are deliberately testing another interface. OBS also lists an IPv4-only test; if it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation test
OBS dynamic bitrate can reduce dropped frames when the connection is congested by lowering the bitrate as needed. It may keep a stream going at reduced video quality, but it does not fix the underlying congestion or route problem. Compare the log and stream quality with it enabled and disabled rather than treating it as a diagnosis.

Choose the next step by what changes the result
| Test or observation | What it helps isolate | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Lower bitrate reduces dropped frames | Whether the connection can sustain the current configured bitrate | Use a sustainable setting while checking upload capacity, competing traffic, and the network route. |
| Ethernet works while Wi-Fi fails | Wireless reliability in the local connection | Investigate Wi-Fi coverage or interference; do not assume a new router is necessary without further evidence. |
| An alternate ingest server changes the outcome | Whether the selected server or route may be involved | Keep timestamps and compare repeat tests; the result is an isolation clue, not proof of a particular fault. |
| Another service works while YouTube does not | Whether the problem may be service-specific | Use YouTube’s timestamped status and error guidance to investigate the YouTube path. |
| Encoder output is healthy but outbound streaming still fails | Whether the issue is beyond the encoder’s generated audio and video | Share timestamps and test results with your ISP; unexpected congestion or changes along a route can affect the connection. |
Prefer reversible, low-cost tests—logs, status checks, a wired-network trial, a bitrate change, and a restart—before considering hardware replacement. OBS notes that an ISP may be able to make changes and that unexpected congestion can occur along a connection route. If YouTube reports a specific error and its instructions do not resolve it, report the remaining problem to YouTube.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving OBS and a home computer online. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
