For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream sent from OBS using H.264, set the video bitrate to 8 Mbps as a starting point. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance lists 3 Mbps as the H.264 minimum for this format. Use CBR, set keyframes every 2 seconds, and plan for at least about 9.75 Mbps of sustained upload capacity when using 128 Kbps stereo audio and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. A 24/7 playlist does not have a separate official bitrate requirement.
Recommended OBS settings for 720p30
These are settings for the stream OBS sends to YouTube (ingest), not for uploading a finished video. YouTube publishes separate recommendations for live streaming and video uploads; do not substitute its upload-video settings for the live-encoder table. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and its separate upload encoding settings.
| Setting | 720p30 guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280 × 720 at 30 fps |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.264: 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum |
| Alternative video codecs | AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 6 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps stereo is the listed recommended advanced setting |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended; YouTube also lists RTMP |
The bitrate recommendations above are from YouTube Help’s live-encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. OBS menu names may vary by version; the settings to match are the values in the table.
How much upload speed a 24/7 stream needs
The 8 Mbps recommendation is for video alone. Add the audio bitrate and allow for transport overhead. With 128 Kbps stereo audio, the nominal combined bitrate is about 8.128 Mbps before transport overhead. YouTube recommends leaving 20% capacity beyond the total stream bitrate, which works out to roughly 9.75 Mbps of sustained upload capacity or more for this example. That figure is arithmetic from the published settings, not a separate YouTube threshold.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
YouTube’s recommendation is to leave room beyond the stream bitrate because the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s streaming tips. If the connection varies or other devices share it, allow more practical margin. If sending a backup stream as well, include its traffic in your capacity plan.
At a constant 8 Mbps, video payload alone is approximately 86.4 decimal GB per day. Actual traffic is higher once audio and transport overhead are included. This is a calculation, not a YouTube-published data-usage figure.

Does a 24/7 playlist need a different bitrate?
No special 24/7 multiplier appears in the reviewed YouTube encoder guidance: its recommendations are organized by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the row that matches your output, then focus on keeping the connection stable and the stream monitored. A playlist’s duration does not by itself establish a different bitrate.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not eliminate the need to send a stable ingest stream at your chosen settings. The reviewed guidance does not establish a bitrate reduction for static playlist content compared with motion-heavy footage.

Set up OBS and test the playlist before going live
- Set the output format. Configure OBS to send 1280 × 720 at 30 fps using H.264 video. Use 8 Mbps video bitrate and CBR rate control.
- Set keyframes and audio. Use a 2-second keyframe interval (never above 4 seconds) and, for the cited audio configuration, AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps stereo.
- Connect to YouTube. Use the YouTube stream key for the broadcast and RTMPS where available; keep the stream key private. YouTube’s live setup options are described in Manage live stream settings.
- Check the actual upload connection. Confirm it can sustain the combined stream bitrate with the recommended headroom, including audio and any backup stream. Other users and applications can reduce available capacity.
- Run a representative test. Test the actual playlist, audio, and movement before relying on it. YouTube advises testing with representative sound and motion and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Testing reduces surprises but does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
What to watch during a long-running stream
- Stream health and messages: monitor YouTube’s live status rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream will remain healthy.
- Network stability: an internet disruption can break a stream. For 24/7 use, assess the reliability of the connection over time and have a recovery plan.
- Capacity changes: include audio and any backup stream in the bandwidth plan; leave room for normal fluctuations and shared use.
- Content rights: make sure you have the necessary rights for every video and audio track in the playlist. A bitrate setting does not resolve copyright issues.
YouTube’s guidance recommends testing and monitoring; it does not guarantee that OBS, a computer, a playlist, or an internet connection will run continuously without interruption.
Troubleshooting bitrate and connection problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating | Check sustained upload capacity against total stream bitrate plus headroom; account for audio, other network use, and any backup stream. |
| Video looks poor despite a stable stream | Bitrate, codec, resolution, or frame rate may not match the intended output | Verify 1280 × 720 at 30 fps and use the applicable codec row in YouTube’s live-encoder table. |
| Stream has connection interruptions | Network disruption or another operational failure | Review YouTube stream-health messages, test the connection and playlist, and use a recovery plan. YouTube notes that network disruptions can break a stream. |
| Settings appear correct but viewers see different playback quality | YouTube creates viewer-facing transcodes from the incoming stream | Check the health of the ingest stream; transcoding does not replace the need for a stable source feed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube playlist that should stay live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
