Set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS; then test the actual stream and check YouTube’s stream health. These are live-stream recommendations, not YouTube’s separate file-upload encoding targets.
Recommended 1080p bitrate settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives different bitrate recommendations for 30 fps and 60 fps, and for H.264 versus AV1/H.265. Choose the row matching the video format OBS actually sends to YouTube. The values below are YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations and minimums on its live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026.
| OBS output and ingest codec | Recommended video bitrate | Minimum video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30, H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60, H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p60, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These figures are starting targets, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. YouTube’s live guide does not give a separate lower bitrate for prerecorded, static, or low-motion video. A prerecorded clip sent as a live stream is still encoded and delivered as a live stream, so do not assume looping footage can use a lower live bitrate just because its picture changes less often.
Choose frame rate and codec deliberately
At either codec group, YouTube’s recommended bitrate is higher for 60 fps than for 30 fps. Use 60 fps when the source and intended stream are 60 fps and your encoder and upload connection can sustain it; otherwise, 30 fps is a reasonable match for a 30 fps source. Do not select a higher frame rate merely to make a bitrate table look better: the source frame rate, OBS output, and stream target should agree.

The recommended figures also differ by codec. Confirm the codec selected for the live encoder in OBS rather than choosing a number based only on “1080p.” If you use a codec outside the listed groups, these rows do not establish its bitrate target; consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings.
Do not confuse live bitrate with video-upload bitrate
YouTube publishes separate guidance for uploading a finished video file. Its recommended upload encoding settings list 10 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p and 15 Mbps for high-frame-rate 1080p. Those are file-upload figures, not the live-ingest recommendations in the table above. For an OBS loop stream, use the live table because OBS is sending an encoded live broadcast.

Set OBS for a stable YouTube Live stream
- Set the live output bitrate. In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the streaming video bitrate to the applicable YouTube recommendation. OBS Simple output mode can adjust bitrate according to upload speed and service limitations; Advanced Output gives separate stream and recording controls. For this task, configure the stream output, not the separate local recording quality. OBS’s overview guide explains these output options.
- Use constant bitrate. Set Rate Control to CBR for the stream. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; enter 2 seconds in the keyframe interval setting. Set the stream server connection to RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure streaming transport. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current guidance.
- Match output resolution and frame rate. Open Settings > Video, choose a 1920 × 1080 output resolution, and set Common FPS Values to the source stream target, typically 30 or 60. The bitrate target depends on the frame rate OBS sends, not just the source file’s label.
- Choose an encoder and test it. OBS supports hardware encoders that offload encoding work to a GPU component. OBS cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders can deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding using the default veryfast preset. There is no universal winner for every computer: test a representative section using the encoder you plan to use and check the resulting stream. See the OBS hardware encoding guide.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast. Use YouTube’s stream setup to obtain the stream key and enter it in OBS’s stream settings for the YouTube service. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use the stream key for the intended broadcast and verify that YouTube Studio shows the incoming stream before relying on it.
Loop one video or a playlist in OBS
Loop a single local file
- In the scene where the stream will appear, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS describes this setting as playing the file again after playback completes.
- Leave Restart playback when source becomes active enabled if the clip should start from the beginning whenever the source becomes active. It is on by default.
- Check the end-of-file behavior. Show nothing when playback ends is on by default; with Loop enabled, the file should restart rather than leave an empty source.
OBS lists these properties in its Media Sources documentation.
Loop an ordered playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and create or select the playlist in the source properties.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the playlist. OBS documents it as on by default.
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. The OBS documentation also notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources for the source options.

Check upload capacity and stream health
The stream’s total bitrate, including audio, must fit within upload bandwidth that remains stable during the broadcast. A speed-test headline is not proof that the same capacity will be available continuously. If your connection cannot sustain the video target plus audio with room for normal variation, lower the video bitrate or choose 30 fps rather than running at an unstable setting. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring stream health.
- Run a representative test with the actual video, audio, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and network you intend to use.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health during the test and broadcast. Check for warnings or an unstable incoming stream rather than judging only by OBS showing that it is connected.
- If the stream is unstable, reduce the stream bitrate and retest; also check whether the computer is keeping up with encoding and whether other network use is consuming upload capacity.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports an unstable stream or dropped frames: The available upload capacity may not reliably support the configured total bitrate. Lower the stream bitrate, try 30 fps if appropriate for the source, and test while monitoring stream health.
- The image looks poor despite using the recommended number: Check that you used the correct row for the ingest codec and frame rate, that OBS is actually outputting 1080p, and that the configured encoder is the one YouTube receives. YouTube’s recommendations are targets, not a promise of identical quality across all encoders.
- The video stops instead of repeating: For a single file, confirm Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled on VLC Video.
- VLC Video is unavailable or does not play the playlist: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The stream does not connect to YouTube: Check that the stream key and service settings are correct, use RTMPS, and confirm the broadcast is ready to receive the OBS feed in YouTube Studio.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos 24/7, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Start with StreamNeo’s free day.
