Start with OBS’s veryfast x264 preset, then test the actual loop. If the CPU cannot keep up, try superfast or ultrafast; these use less CPU but can look worse at the same bitrate. No preset can guarantee continuous streaming on unspecified hardware. Your result depends on the CPU, output resolution and frame rate, scene motion and detail, bitrate, and upload stability.
Which x264 preset uses the least CPU in OBS?
Ultrafast is the least CPU-intensive of the three presets discussed here; superfast is the next step, followed by veryfast. The trade-off is compression efficiency: at the same bitrate, a faster preset may produce a less detailed or more visibly compressed picture.
For a first test, choose veryfast. OBS uses it as a baseline in its x264 streaming guidance, but OBS cautions that settings vary by setup and use case. If encoding falls behind, test superfast and then ultrafast, comparing the picture at the bitrate you intend to use. A faster preset may relieve CPU pressure, but it is not a guarantee that the computer can stream continuously.
Set the live output for YouTube
These are live-stream recommendations, not recording settings. In OBS, open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, then use the Streaming tab to configure the encoder and rate control. OBS interface labels can vary by version.

Encoder and rate control
- Choose x264 as the streaming encoder if available.
- Set Rate Control to CBR, as YouTube recommends for H.264 live ingest.
- Use RTMPS as the stream transport where available. YouTube recommends it for encrypted transmission.
Keyframe interval
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. In OBS this setting is commonly shown as Keyframe Interval in the streaming output options.
Bitrate, resolution, and frame rate
Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s H.264 guidance for your output resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s stated minimum and recommended ingest bitrates, not guaranteed quality targets; confirm the current table before configuring a stream.

For a low-power system, a lower resolution or frame rate may be a sensible trade if the loop still looks suitable. A mostly still image often needs less bitrate than busy animation to look acceptable, but the required bitrate depends on the actual video; there is no precise reduction that applies to every loop. OBS’s bitrate examples assume veryfast and low-to-medium motion, so treat them as a starting reference rather than a promise.
Your upload connection must sustain the chosen bitrate reliably. A bitrate near the top of a recommendation range is not useful if the connection repeatedly falls short. Select an output the connection can maintain and check YouTube’s stream health while testing.

Do not copy recording settings into a live stream
OBS’s Advanced Recording guidance lists x264 CRF 16–23, a 2-second keyframe interval, veryfast, High profile, and Tune: None as a recording baseline. CRF is recording-oriented guidance; do not use it as the live stream’s rate-control setting in place of YouTube’s CBR recommendation.
Test the loop before leaving it on
- Match the real workload. Test with the actual video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and OBS scene you plan to stream. Include the loop’s busiest movement or animation; a static desktop test will not reveal its full encoding load.
- Begin with veryfast and the intended output. Configure CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate that fits the chosen YouTube output and your upload connection.
- Watch OBS for encoding lag. If frames are missed because encoding cannot keep up, try superfast or ultrafast, or reduce resolution or frame rate and test again.
- Check the picture at the selected bitrate. Faster presets can reduce CPU load but also reduce compression efficiency. If quality is inadequate, compare a slower preset or a higher bitrate that your connection can sustain.
- Monitor YouTube stream health. Confirm the stream is arriving as expected and observe it during a representative run. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
Neither OBS’s system requirements nor a successful short test certifies a particular machine or preset for 24/7 streaming. OBS notes that requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Continuous operation also depends on factors beyond the preset, including stable power, cooling, and network connectivity; the available guidance does not establish a universal hardware threshold or uptime guarantee.

Troubleshoot common x264 streaming problems
OBS reports encoding lag
The CPU may not be encoding each frame in time. Try a faster preset, lower the output resolution or frame rate, or use a supported hardware encoder if one is available. Hardware encoding is a separate option, not an x264 preset; OBS generally recommends it for performance because it moves encoding work to specialized GPU components.
The stream looks blocky or loses detail
The bitrate may be too low for the output and motion, or the faster preset may be compressing less efficiently. Check YouTube’s H.264 range for the selected resolution and frame rate, then test a slower preset or a higher sustainable bitrate. If neither is workable, reduce resolution or frame rate and assess the result.

The stream disconnects or health is unstable
Check the upload connection and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A bitrate the connection cannot sustain can contribute to delivery problems. Test RTMPS, and check the stream key and destination in OBS if the stream does not reach YouTube. The encoder preset does not fix an unstable connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a low-power computer on around the clock is the problem, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plans. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
