Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For most YouTube creators who want control, Linux support, and a free, open-source recorder, OBS Studio is the stronger default. Streamlabs Desktop may suit you better if you prefer guided setup, want to import existing OBS settings, or need its documented workflow for recording microphone and desktop audio on separate tracks. Neither is proven to deliver better recording quality or use fewer computer resources in every setup; your hardware, encoder, content, and settings matter.
OBS vs. Streamlabs at a glance
| What matters | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems listed | Windows, macOS, and Linux. The download page lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer; check the current page for Linux options. | Windows and macOS. Its requirements page lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ as minimums; see its current recommendations below. |
| Getting started | Offers configuration options and an Auto-Configuration Wizard. You assemble and tune scenes and sources. | Onboarding offers a recording-only choice, sign-in, and the option to import OBS settings. |
| Audio workflow | Provides an audio mixer, per-source filters, and VST support. | Documents recording microphone and desktop audio to separate tracks for editing. |
| Customization | Supports scenes, varied sources, audio filters, and plugin/script customization. | Provides an included recording workflow; the cited sources do not establish a directly comparable customization advantage. |
| Performance or recording quality winner | Not established by a matched head-to-head test. Both depend on settings, workload, and hardware. | |
OBS describes itself as free and open-source recording and live-streaming software. Streamlabs’ onboarding and recording guide make clear that Desktop can also be used to capture locally rather than go live.
Which one should you choose for YouTube?
Choose OBS if you want control and broad platform support
- You use Linux, or want an application whose listed platforms include Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- You want to build a production around scenes and sources such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, or capture cards.
- You want to configure audio filters or extend the setup with plugins and scripts.
- You are comfortable tuning the recording workflow rather than relying on more guided onboarding.
Choose Streamlabs Desktop if its setup and track workflow fit you
- You prefer an onboarding flow that explicitly lets you choose recording instead of live streaming.
- You already have OBS settings you want to import instead of rebuilding your setup.
- You want the documented option to record microphone and desktop audio to individual tracks, then choose or replace sources in your editor.
Separate tracks can be useful when commentary needs different treatment from system sound. OBS documents its mixer, per-source filters, and VST support, but the cited product descriptions do not establish that its multitrack workflow is easier or harder than Streamlabs’. Choose based on the workflow you can verify in the current version.
Check operating-system and hardware requirements
Requirements change, so recheck the vendors’ download and requirements pages before installing. OBS’s download page listed version 32.2.2, released August 14; the search result did not establish the year. It listed Windows 10/11 and macOS 13 or newer, plus Linux distribution options. OBS’s system-requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, so treat its baseline as older guidance rather than a current guarantee.

Streamlabs’ system-requirements page was last updated April 8, 2026. It lists Windows 11 or macOS 12+ and 8 GB RAM minimum. Its recommendations include Windows 10 or macOS 13+, a recent Intel/AMD CPU and GPU, 16 GB+ RAM, and a 512 GB+ SSD for more demanding use. These are vendor requirements and recommendations, not evidence that Streamlabs needs more resources than OBS.
OBS warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its guidance says CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Streamlabs likewise says settings depend on content, other running programs, and hardware. Neither page supports a blanket claim that one app is lighter.

Set up a reliable YouTube recording
- Install the app for your operating system. Confirm the current vendor requirements first, especially if you use Linux or an older macOS or Windows release.
- Choose a recording workflow. In Streamlabs onboarding, select recording rather than streaming if you are capturing locally. If you have an existing OBS setup, use its documented OBS-settings import option. In OBS, use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then review the configuration.
- Build the scene or capture layout. In OBS, add only the sources you need, such as a window or display capture, webcam, and microphone. Keep the layout simple while checking the recording; more sources and scene complexity can affect CPU load.
- Set up audio deliberately. Check microphone and desktop levels in the audio controls. OBS provides per-source filters, including noise gate, noise suppression, and gain, plus VST support. In Streamlabs, enable separate microphone and desktop tracks if you want to choose or replace them in editing.
- Record a short representative test. Use the same app or game, scene layout, microphone, resolution, frame rate, and encoder you plan to use for the full session. Check the app for dropped frames or encoding overload, then play the file to confirm picture, audio tracks, and sync before recording at length.
- Review the finished file. Confirm the captured area is correct, commentary is intelligible, system audio is at a useful level, and the file plays in your editor. Fix problems in a short test before recording a full session.
The cited setup material does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, or encoder preset that suits every computer and recording. Start with the app’s configuration guidance, then test the settings and workload you will actually use instead of assuming that compatible hardware guarantees smooth capture.
Keep YouTube rights and monetization in mind
Recording software does not grant rights to the material in your video. Before publishing, make sure you have permission to use music, clips, images, and other third-party material. A recording that includes copyrighted content can still raise a rights issue on YouTube. Also consider whether the finished video adds original commentary, instruction, or other value; merely capturing or reusing material does not itself establish eligibility for monetization. Check YouTube’s current policies for the specific content and channel before relying on a monetization outcome.
