OBS Studio documents a finite reconnect policy for supported outputs; FFmpeg’s documented reconnect flags are in its HTTP protocol section, not its native RTMP section. Since YouTube encoder ingest commonly uses RTMP or RTMPS, don’t assume FFmpeg’s HTTP flags will reconnect an RTMP stream. Neither encoder’s retry behavior guarantees that YouTube will resume the same broadcast after every interruption.

OBS and FFmpeg reconnect settings are not equivalent

OBS exposes output reconnect settings: a maximum retry count and an initial retry wait. The wait doubles after each retry, and a retry count of zero disables reconnecting. These are bounded retries, not an assurance that the output will remain available indefinitely.

FFmpeg’s documented reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and related controls appear in the HTTP protocol options. FFmpeg documents native RTMP separately, with connection parameters such as server, application, playpath, timeout or listen behavior, and TCP keepalive. The current protocol documentation does not list an RTMP retry-count and backoff setting equivalent to OBS’s output reconnect settings.

Question OBS Studio FFmpeg
Where is documented reconnect behavior? Output API settings for supported outputs Generic retry options are documented for HTTP; native RTMP options are separate
Can you set a retry limit? Yes. A maximum retry count; zero disables reconnecting reconnect_max_retries is an HTTP option with no default set. This does not establish native RTMP output retry behavior
How does retry timing work? Set an initial wait; the wait doubles on each retry HTTP options include maximum and total delay controls; these are not established as RTMP output controls
Does a successful reconnect guarantee the same YouTube broadcast continues? No universal outcome is established No universal outcome is established

FFmpeg options can vary by release and build. Check the protocol documentation for the version you actually run, and verify any command-line behavior against that build. In particular, do not add HTTP reconnect flags to an RTMP publishing command on the assumption that the similarly named options apply.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

What a reconnect does—and does not—recover

A retry is an encoder-side attempt to restore a connection. A 24/7 stream also depends on the input continuing to play, the encoder process remaining alive, the network path staying usable, and YouTube’s live event accepting the incoming feed. A local reconnect does not prove that viewers experienced uninterrupted playback or that YouTube resumed the same event.

The official guidance covered here does not promise identical broadcast-state outcomes for every type of interruption. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Treat “the encoder connected again” and “the intended YouTube broadcast recovered as intended” as two separate checks.

Set up for a reliable YouTube ingest

OBS and FFmpeg are encoders, not substitutes for testing the YouTube ingest and event workflow. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS and recommends H.264 bitrate settings according to resolution and frame rate. Its current guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 ranges for 1080p:

YouTube 1080p target Recommended H.264 bitrate range
30 fps 5–14 Mbps
60 fps 6–17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of stable 24/7 operation. Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently, rather than selecting the highest number in the range by default. OBS troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point when investigating bitrate problems; that is a troubleshooting starting point, not a promise of adequate capacity for every stream.

  • Use a wired network connection if Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS identifies an unstable connection and a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible causes of disconnects or dropped frames.
  • Test the actual resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder, and ingest path you plan to use. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  • During a live event, check the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

How to test recovery before relying on a 24/7 setup

  1. Start a controlled test. Use the intended YouTube live event and the same encoder, ingest protocol, and stream settings you expect to use in production.
  2. Record the baseline. Note the encoder’s connection status and logs, plus the event’s status and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
  3. Simulate a brief network interruption. Observe whether OBS or your FFmpeg process attempts a reconnect, and whether the YouTube event returns to the state you need.
  4. Check the viewer-facing result. Confirm that the intended event is receiving video again. Do not treat a local “connected” message alone as proof of uninterrupted playback or event continuity.
  5. Repeat for likely failure cases. Test the interruption length and recovery scenario that matter to your operation, and decide how you will detect and respond if the encoder, input, network, or event does not recover.

This is a recommended test procedure, not a claim that either encoder has been tested here. The result can depend on the specific encoder version and build, network failure, and YouTube event state.

Troubleshoot a stream that keeps disconnecting

Symptom Likely area to check Practical next step
OBS drops frames or repeatedly disconnects Network instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain Try a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unstable, and lower the bitrate to a level the upload connection can sustain. Use OBS’s 75% starting point only as troubleshooting guidance, then test.
OBS stops retrying The configured retry limit has been reached, or reconnecting is disabled Check the output reconnect settings, including the retry count. A count of zero disables reconnecting; a finite count will eventually be exhausted.
FFmpeg’s HTTP retry flags do not restore a YouTube RTMP output The flags are documented for HTTP, while the publishing output uses native RTMP Do not assume those flags control RTMP. Check the documentation and behavior for your exact FFmpeg version and build.
The encoder reconnects but the YouTube event does not behave as expected Encoder connection recovery and YouTube broadcast state are separate Check the Live Control Room and test the intended event workflow before depending on automatic continuation.
The stream fails after a longer period Input playback, encoder process, network, or output behavior may be involved Inspect the encoder logs and input/process health alongside YouTube stream health. The cause cannot be inferred from “conversion failed” or a disconnect alone.

Which option fits a 24/7 operator?

OBS is the clearer documented choice if you want an encoder with explicit, configurable output retries. Its retry behavior is finite, so pair it with network and stream-health monitoring. FFmpeg may suit an operator comfortable managing a command-line workflow, but do not count its documented HTTP reconnect options as native RTMP output retries without confirming support in the exact build and protocol path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do OBS and FFmpeg retry forever?

No. OBS documents a maximum retry count. FFmpeg’s documented HTTP retry options do not establish an equivalent native RTMP output policy.

Will a reconnect preserve the same YouTube live event?

The cited official guidance does not establish a universal guarantee; test the specific event workflow in YouTube Live Control Room.
