Choose OBS if you want a graphical interface for pairing a radio feed with a visual and controlling the broadcast. Choose FFmpeg if you want a scripted relay and can configure and supervise a command-line media process. Neither is inherently more reliable: the right choice depends on who will operate it and how it will be monitored. For either, use YouTube’s current ingest settings, test the actual audio and visual, and confirm you have permission to retransmit the station’s programming.

OBS vs FFmpeg: which fits an internet radio stream?

Decision OBS Studio FFmpeg
Setup and control Graphical application with a YouTube setup guide for stream keys and start/stop controls. OBS’s streaming guide Command-line workflow suited to scripting and automation. The specific FFmpeg configuration for this radio-to-YouTube workflow is not established here.
Audio and visual composition Scenes and a visible interface make it a natural fit for adding a static image, title card, logo, or other visual. Its supported-formats guide documents media and container support. Can form part of an encoded media pipeline, but input and command details need to be verified for your source and chosen ingest settings.
Unattended operation You can run a broadcast through its interface; unattended recovery behavior is not established by the available setup documentation. A script can be repeated, but reliable unattended operation depends on process supervision, logging, and recovery configuration. A script alone does not guarantee restarts.
YouTube delivery OBS lists YouTube RTMPS and HLS configurations; YouTube also lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. OBS service configurations YouTube accepts compatible encoded streams through its ingestion methods. The encoder must still meet the current specifications.

For a first setup or a broadcast that someone will watch and control, OBS is the more approachable choice. For a repeatable relay maintained by someone comfortable with command-line media tools, FFmpeg is a reasonable option. This is a workflow recommendation, not a performance test. YouTube’s requirements apply whichever encoder you choose.

What the radio stream needs to send

A YouTube live stream is a video broadcast, even if the programme is audio-only. Pair the radio audio with a static image or generated visual; verify the result in the live preview before going public. The requirements below are from YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates guidance. Use the settings currently shown for your event in YouTube Studio if they differ.

  • Ingest: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the current ingest details in the channel’s Live Control Room rather than copying an endpoint from an old guide.
  • Video: YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For a simple radio visual, avoid choosing a quality that exceeds what your upload connection can sustain.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube specifies for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube’s advanced recommendations list AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps for stereo. These are platform recommendations, not universal rules for every source or listening context.
  • Connection: YouTube recommends choosing settings that fit your available upload speed and testing the connection. A stable feed matters more than selecting the highest available quality.

YouTube detects encoder settings and transcodes a live feed for different viewer formats. Test with representative audio and the visual you intend to use, then monitor the stream-health panel and any messages while live.

Set up the broadcast and test it

  1. Identify the audio source. Decide whether you are relaying an internet radio URL or feeding audio from a physical, line-level source. An audio interface is only relevant if your source is analog or you need hardware monitoring.
  2. Choose the operator workflow. In OBS, build a scene with the audio source and a visual, then use its YouTube service setup and visible start/stop controls. With FFmpeg, confirm that your chosen input, encoding, and output configuration are correct for the source and YouTube ingest; detailed command syntax is not covered here, so do not assume a sample command will fit every station feed.
  3. Create or select the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, retrieve the current stream settings and key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a broadcast to your event.
  4. Use RTMPS unless you need a specific HLS workflow. Configure the encoder with the current event settings. Do not treat HLS as a drop-in replacement for an RTMPS destination; its setup uses segments and a playlist.
  5. Run a preflight. Where appropriate, test with a private or unlisted event. Listen to the received audio, inspect the visual, confirm the ingest reports healthy audio and video, and check YouTube’s stream-health notices before relying on the setup.
  6. Monitor the live event. Keep an operator able to review stream health and respond to warnings. A configured encoder does not remove the need to check the YouTube event during transmission.
  7. Clear rights before launch. Confirm that the station and relevant rightsholders permit retransmission on YouTube, in the territories where it will be available, and in any archive that will remain after the event.

When HLS is the right choice

HLS ingestion is for workflows that need its specific features, including some HDR or codec cases. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers segments, and ultra-low latency is disabled. Its HLS ingestion guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. That is a different delivery configuration, not simply a different server address. Use RTMPS for a routine stereo radio stream unless you have a reason to use HLS.

Copyright and permission are part of the setup

A station being publicly playable online does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube. Check the station’s license and permissions for the specific retransmission, territory, and any saved archive. The answer depends on the rights granted and the jurisdictions involved.

YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. A detected match may cause a placeholder to replace the stream; if the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license may not prevent interruption if the channel is not on the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and resolve any allowlisting requirement before going live. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also end a stream.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: Check the Live Control Room’s messages and stream-health indicators first. Verify the encoder’s current ingest settings, connection stability, and whether the upload capacity can sustain the selected quality.
  • The event has video but no sound: Check that the encoder is receiving the intended radio input and that the output uses an audio codec supported by the selected YouTube ingest setup. Confirm by listening to the live preview, not just by checking that the input meter moves.
  • The visual is missing or unsuitable: Ensure the scene or output includes video along with the audio, and test the exact image or generated visual in the event preview.
  • The stream is interrupted for a rights match: Stop or resolve the matched content rather than repeatedly restarting unchanged. Confirm permission and any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder.
  • The relay stops when unattended: Check logs and process supervision. The encoder choice by itself does not establish automatic recovery; unattended operation needs a deployment-specific restart and monitoring plan.
