For a fixed playlist you want to configure visually, OBS Studio with its VLC Video source is usually the simpler choice; FFmpeg is better suited to command-line and scripted workflows when the files are compatible. Neither playlist method, by itself, schedules a specific clip to begin at a wall-clock time. YouTube’s scheduled broadcast is a separate step from choosing and rotating the media.
What “scheduling a playlist” can mean
Three separate tasks are easy to conflate:
- Playlist rotation: play files in sequence, optionally repeating the list or shuffling it.
- Scheduling a YouTube broadcast: create an upcoming live event with a start time and watch page in YouTube Studio.
- Scheduling a particular clip: make a specified video start at a particular clock time, such as 3 p.m. The OBS playlist controls and FFmpeg concat demuxer described here do not provide that function on their own; it requires a separate scheduler or automation layer.
YouTube’s API distinguishes the broadcast event from the stream resource used to transmit audio and video. A channel can bind multiple broadcasts to one stream resource, or use a separate stream resource for each broadcast. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation.
OBS vs FFmpeg at a glance
| Question | OBS Studio + VLC Video source | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| How do you set up the playlist? | Add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist in OBS. | Write a text list of files and use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. |
| How do you repeat it? | Enable Loop Playlist; keep Shuffle off if order matters. | The demuxer sequences the list. Long-running repetition requires a command-line workflow around the input; the cited documentation does not prescribe a turnkey YouTube rotation command. |
| What does it require? | VLC installed, with the same architecture as OBS. | Compatible input streams, codecs, and time bases; accurate duration metadata matters. |
| Who may prefer it? | Operators who want a graphical interface and scene controls. | Operators comfortable managing commands, media preparation, and errors in scripts. |
| Does the playlist feature schedule a clip by clock time? | Not in the documented playlist controls. | Not in the concat demuxer; it sequences a list. |
| Does it create the YouTube event? | No. Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio separately. | No. FFmpeg sends output to YouTube; the broadcast event is configured separately. |
These are differences in workflow, not a head-to-head performance or reliability result. The official documentation describes setup and constraints, not comparative test results.
Set up playlist rotation in OBS
For one repeating video
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that will provide the live video.
- Select the video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Confirm the source plays as expected before connecting the broadcast.
OBS documents Media Source looping for a single file. It is not the multi-file playlist option.

For several files in a fixed rotation
- Install VLC. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as well; OBS specifies that the architectures should match for the VLC source.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to your scene.
- In the source properties, add the files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle off to preserve the order.
- Preview the rotation locally. Check that each file plays and that the sequence and repeat behavior match your intent.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live broadcast and connect OBS using the server URL and stream key, or another YouTube connection option shown in the encoder workflow.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the Media Source and VLC Video playlist controls. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the separate connection step. Follow the current Live Control Room and OBS labels, which can change.
Build a playlist rotation with FFmpeg
Check the files before using the concat demuxer
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and sequences them as though their packets had been muxed together. That can avoid re-encoding when the inputs are suitable, but it has compatibility requirements: the files need matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Inaccurate duration metadata may produce artifacts or gaps.

Prepare a concat list with each file in the intended order, then invoke FFmpeg using the concat demuxer as an input. The precise command depends on the files and the output you need; FFmpeg’s documentation explains the demuxer, while its command-line rules make option placement significant: options generally apply to the input or output that follows them. Treat a command from another setup as a starting point to verify, not as a universal recipe. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.
When the files are not compatible
If the files differ materially and need normalization, the FFmpeg FAQ points to the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. The concat demuxer and concat filter are distinct approaches; do not assume a mixed set of inputs can be joined cleanly without preparing them. Consult FFmpeg’s concat FAQ.

Connect the output to YouTube
Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio and use the correct server URL and stream key for the encoder output. The key and ingest endpoint are YouTube connection settings; a concat list does not create or schedule the broadcast. Verify the output and the current YouTube encoder instructions for your setup before relying on a long-running stream. The documented mechanisms alone do not establish uninterrupted operation.
Choose the workflow that fits
- Choose OBS + VLC for a fixed, ordered rotation you want to configure and inspect in a GUI. Its playlist loop and shuffle controls are visible in the source properties.
- Choose FFmpeg if command-line control or scripting fits your workflow and you can satisfy the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements, or prepare inputs for the concat filter when re-encoding is needed.
- Add a separate scheduler if the requirement is “play this specific clip at this exact time.” Neither documented playlist mechanism establishes that capability by itself.
- Keep broadcast scheduling separate in either workflow: YouTube’s event timing and the encoder’s stream connection are not the same thing as the local media rotation.
Protocol is not playlist rotation
YouTube supports HLS as an ingest protocol, but choosing HLS does not schedule or rotate local files. YouTube’s HLS setup specifies MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; it also describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP. These are encoder and protocol constraints, not settings for the OBS/VLC or FFmpeg media playlist. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- OBS does not show or play the VLC playlist: confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS, then reopen or reconfigure the source.
- The OBS order changes unexpectedly: check that Shuffle is off and that the files are listed in the intended order; use Loop Playlist for repetition.
- The FFmpeg rotation has gaps or artifacts: check that input streams, codecs, and time bases match, and verify duration metadata. If the media needs normalization, consider the concat filter and re-encoding rather than forcing an incompatible demuxer sequence.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder output: check the broadcast selection, server URL, and stream key against the current YouTube encoder setup. Playlist configuration and broadcast connection are separate.
- A clip did not start at the scheduled time: a broadcast start time is not a clip scheduler. Add and verify a separate automation layer for wall-clock selection.
- HLS output behaves differently from RTMP: check YouTube’s HLS segment and rolling-playlist requirements; HLS is a higher-latency ingest choice, not a local rotation feature.
Copyright and channel policy
Before streaming a rotation, make sure you have the rights to the video and audio in every file. A technical playlist that plays successfully does not establish permission to broadcast its contents. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming setup guidance and applicable copyright and channel policies for your content; do not assume that looping or scheduling changes those obligations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
